Chapter 16: The Direction of the Bet

The Bet Proposal of the Wandering Swordsman.

It was sudden, but I accepted the Wandering Swordsman’s proposal.

The terms of the bet were simple.

If the Wandering Swordsman wins even once in the next three rounds, he wins; otherwise, I win.

If the Wandering Swordsman wins, I will turn on the broadcast for at least one day.

If I win, the Wandering Swordsman will grant me one wish, within reason.

It was a very simple bet, but at the same time, it was an unexpected one.

I wasn’t sure why the Wandering Swordsman wanted me to broadcast, but since the bet was set, I had no intention of backing down.

What bothered me the most was that the Wandering Swordsman was so arrogant.

Even though I didn’t know what he wanted or was aiming for from me, the fact that he made the bet with victory and defeat as conditions meant that he thought he could win against me.

The match was set, and I checked the broadcast screen.

Three seconds after my match was set, the Wandering Swordsman’s match was also set.

I instinctively knew I had successfully targeted him with my experience as a sniper and pressed the accept button.

***

As time passed, the number of viewers for the Wandering Swordsman’s broadcast kept increasing.

The viewer count was nearing 5,000, and although it was a no-mic Leori broadcast, the Wandering Swordsman’s broadcast had risen to the ranks of big corporations. But the host of the broadcast, the Wandering Swordsman, was entirely focused on the game, trying to win the bet.

[What kind of room is this with 5,000 people?]

[A broadcast walking the path of hell full of loneliness and romance.]

[What’s that, you nerd?]

[Who is the Wandering Swordsman? Why am I watching this Leori broadcast?]

[What’s that again, you nerd?]

[Get the influx out!!]

[Fact: All the people here are influx.]

[Isn’t this their first broadcast? They’re all influx.]

[Wow, but how is it possible to meet the same person 9 times in a row?]

[Both the Wandering Swordsman and Barcode are both terrible.]

The chat kept rising.

Normally, when a streamer doesn’t check the chat, the viewers stop chatting as well.

However, even though the Wandering Swordsman didn’t have a mic and rarely communicated through chat, the chat room was very active.

In fact, the reason the chat was so active was simpler than expected.

The Wandering Swordsman’s broadcast was like a movie.

He kept losing but never gave up, rising again and again, like the protagonist of a shonen manga.

The Wandering Swordsman was continuously improving against the mysterious Yune Master.

The viewers could clearly see his growth.

That’s why they kept cheering for the Wandering Swordsman, who was overcoming adversity.

[What is this broadcast about?]

[It’s a movie-watching room.]

[Soda… I need some soda.]

[So, when does that villain die?]

[When will the protagonist win? Ah, haha]

[This is a terrible balance movie, but I won’t quit.]

[Please, just quit already.]

Even though the process was frustrating at times, the viewers didn’t leave the broadcast.

No, they couldn’t leave.

[Finally, will he win once?]

[This really has king-level potential.]

[If he wins just one team fight, the game is over.]

The ‘possibility of victory’ that was only seen by the Wandering Swordsman slowly started to be visible to the viewers watching the broadcast.

[The Elder Dragon has respawned.]

The Elder Dragon, which would decide the outcome, had respawned.

The enemy team had four dragons or more, so securing the Elder Dragon was a must.

Everyone playing the game knew this, including the Wandering Swordsman, his team, and the enemy team.

What followed were plays that could only be described as ‘art.’

[Our team has stolen the Elder Dragon!]

With an entrance via Sonic Wave, our team’s Riku kicked out the enemy Elesse with her ultimate and stole the Elder Dragon.

Yune immediately dove into the enemy backline, targeting both the AD Kare and the support who were stacked on the hill.

However, our team’s Bars avoided the attack with a flash, seemingly predicting the enemy’s move.

Countless exchanges of attacks and counters followed, too many to describe with words.

The artistic team fight that lasted over a minute ended with the enemy team securing the victory.

In the end, it came down to the slightest difference; Yune wasn’t caught.

The only one left alive from the team fight, Yune, was heading to the mid lane.

She pushed the wave and destroyed the respawned inhibitor turret.

Screech—

Screech—

The sound of Yune’s lonely blade echoed through the Rift.

The noise continued, approaching as a blessing for her team and a curse for the enemy.

[Wow, this is how it turns out?]

[That’s so disappointing, seriously;;;]

[I think I’m going insane, I think I’m going insane, I think I’m going insane, I think I’m going insane.]

[We lost, but we fought well.]

[Why is the Equalizer duration so long? Haha.]

[Lol, Equalizer lasting 4 hours is crossing the line.]

[I think I’m going crazy, I think I’m going crazy, I think I’m going crazy.]

[Wahh, I’m a baby viewer, I hate waiting.]

[Give me some soda!]

Even though they tried to hold onto hope, the fastest to revive on their team was the support, Karla.

But they still had to wait a long 30 seconds.

Naturally, in that time, Yune could finish the game, something even a beginner could do if they were playing Leori.

Thus, the ninth attempt, the second round of the bet, ended.

Now, the Wandering Swordsman had only one chance left.

But he wasn’t worried.

The ladder to overcome that tall wall was almost finished.

“Haah…”

The Wandering Swordsman took a deep breath and queued up for the last match.

He didn’t care about the bet anymore; only the ‘desire’ to win moved his body.

With all his focus directed toward a single goal, the Wandering Swordsman felt free for the first time in his life.

The long, long period of patience and hardship was over.

Now, it was time to win.

And so, the final game began.

The final game, which would decide the outcome of the bet, had begun.

Before the game even started, I felt slightly dizzy, but once the game started, my head was spinning even more.

The enemy team’s top, jungle, and support were all tank champions.

“The Sunfire Aegis is way too OP.”

After playing alongside the Wandering Swordsman for 9 games, I had a rough idea of what items were OP and what kind of performance they delivered.

First, there were the Sunfire Aegis for tanks and the Duskblade for assassins.

These two items were insanely strong mythic items, especially when you experienced them firsthand.

Of course, when asked if the Duskblade on Yune was more broken than Guinsoo’s Rageblade, I would hesitate to answer.

But Duskblade is definitely less broken than Guinsoo’s Rageblade on Yune, while the Sunfire Aegis is at the same level as Guinsoo’s Rageblade on Yune.

[Minions have spawned.]

Nothing happened during the invade phase, and the minions spawned as usual.

The minions quickly reached the lanes, and the 10th laning phase between me and the Wandering Swordsman began.

‘It feels like…’

It felt like I was touching a finely honed blade, sharp enough to cut even with the slightest touch.

The pressure I felt from the Wandering Swordsman’s Yasuo was palpable, and it was unlike anything I had experienced before.

Some might say I’m overreacting or just imagining things, but I wish it were just a misunderstanding.

I really wanted someone to reassure me and remove this strange sense of pressure.

Yasuo was farming all the minions while never once losing his shield.

You could break his shield with an auto-attack, but doing so would put you at a disadvantage in the trade.

If I couldn’t break the shield through poke, the best option was to hold back in the early stages.

But I couldn’t just give up the minions, so every time that happened, Yasuo would trade carefully without overextending.

By “carefully,” I mean when the jungler arrives, and whether or not you survive could depend on how much you overextend.

The Wandering Swordsman carefully crossed the line without overextending and wasted our jungler’s time.

In fact, our jungler Evelynn was preparing to gank mid from an area unseen by the enemy.

“Not bad…”

After wasting some time in mid, Evelynn left the lane.

Then, Yasuo, who had been gathering his whirlwind, cleverly engaged and took a short trade.

That trade was quick and concise without going for a risky kill.

Just a moment ago, Yasuo could have easily solo-killed me.

But Yasuo chose to look beyond the immediate solo kill and focus on the bigger picture.

From Yasuo’s perspective, if Evelynn had been there, the lane would have gotten messy, and even if he got the solo kill, he could have died due to low health.

With our jungler Amumu showing in the top lane and Evelynn invisible, Yasuo made the best possible decision.

He gave up the solo kill and showed his intent to slowly, very slowly, wear me down instead.

“Hah.”

Reading the Wandering Swordsman’s resolve, I let out a wry smile.

He was a monster who had maintained his Challenger rank solely on his mechanical skill.

And now, with the addition of a decent “brain,” how many could stop the Wandering Swordsman’s Yasuo?

The sudden growth of the Wandering Swordsman added even more pressure and tension to the situation.

Oh, was it really sudden growth?

The experience he had gained from facing me three months ago was now becoming apparent.

Maybe I leveled up completely from the last game.

Such a silly yet interesting thought filled my mind.

The person in front of me, the “Outlaw Swordsman,” was no longer the same person I once knew.

The pressure I felt from the “legendary” figure I met once upon a time.

The same kind of pressure I now felt from Yasuo.

“I need to focus…”

If you spend too much concentration on a single game, it’s not your body that gets tired, but your mind.

Physical abilities can be covered by mental strength, but mental strength can’t be covered by physical abilities.

A woman’s body is incredibly weak, but…

Throughout my gaming experience, I covered my weak body with mental strength.

I thought that exercising had made me a bit better.

But perhaps all that exercise had only improved my physical health.

[First Blood!]

With this lack of focus, it seems like I’m going to lose control.

[First Blood!]

“Whew… Whew…”

The Outlaw Swordsman exhaled heavily.

From how intensely I focused just now, I felt like I was about to bleed from my nose.

It didn’t actually happen, but if this continued even a little longer, I felt like I might start bleeding.

First solo kill achieved under all the right conditions.

Though I had definitely scored solo kills against the mysterious master Yu-Ne in the past,

Back then, even if I got the solo kill, I’d somehow end up at a disadvantage.

The opponent I was facing was only their mid laner.

But the pressure I felt was as if I was facing two enemies the whole time in the laning phase.

Only now had I been freed from that pressure.

The Outlaw Swordsman, who had achieved the glorious “true solo kill,” didn’t let up his focus.

It truly was a glorious solo kill.

I hadn’t yet secured complete victory over my opponent.

The Outlaw Swordsman began to take control of the game, based on the advantage he had gained.

As the team’s mid-laner, he exerted influence over both sides of the lane and applied pressure across the map.

The sharpened blade finally shone brightly.

That light synergized with his team, and the balance of the game rapidly began to shift.

Yasuo, who had incredible synergy with the “Tank” Malphite.

The influence in teamfights was dominated by the “Tank” Amumu, ranking first in influence.

And, the “pseudo-tank” Alistar, who would provide wings to Yasuo’s back.

For the first time, the game began to tilt toward our side, rather than the enemy team.

However, even though the balance had shifted, the game didn’t come easily to our side.

Even a toothless tiger is still a beast.

Even a Yu-Ne who hadn’t grown could not afford to relax.

[Dragon slain!]

[Rift Herald slain!]

[Enemy slain!]

Slowly, very slowly, the game was being played out.

Without stopping to think, the advantages piled up.

Though it might seem unimportant now, as it piles up, it will eventually become a huge snowball that breaks down the towering wall.

Kieeeeek!!!

[Baron slain!]

[Finish!]

Now, victory was truly within reach.
