“You told her all of that?”
The sky was clear and vast. On the green sports field, students ran everywhere. The slightly hot sun made people’s faces flush, but a sudden cool breeze made their heated hearts beat even faster.
Karin and Boli An sat in the stands, their view wide and unobstructed, giving them a clear look at everyone below.
Boli An watched the running white figure on the field and retorted, “Why not tell her? She was bound to find out sooner or later anyway.”
Karin propped her chin up with one hand, her gaze lazily sweeping over the shifting crowd. Although she still wore a relaxed smile, her golden, slitted pupils moved as if searching for prey, carrying a coldness that even she herself didn’t notice.
“That twin, what do you plan to do with them?” she asked.
Boli An tilted her head back, her whole body leaning against the backrest. She reached up with a slender hand to press down the grey round-brimmed hat covering her face, thinking she should buy a pure black one next time—grey was still a bit too translucent, making it hard to sleep peacefully.
She said in a lazy tone, “What can be done? If one dies, another will come. It’s better to just keep an eye on these two.”
The Life Sequence didn’t care about the loss of such personnel.
It was an organization that had grown strong through dishonorable means, unscrupulously destroying one competitor after another to absorb their nutrients—assassination, car accidents, “accidents,” and so on, until it held a monopoly in its field.
Then, it began using its accumulated capital to whitewash its dark past, extending its tentacles into the world of politics.
In its eyes, these people were all consumables that could be replaced at any time.
This philosophy was inextricably linked to the mastermind pulling the strings from behind the scenes—”The Mastermind.”
“Karin,” Boli An said suddenly, “I heard the people from God’s Blade want her?”
Karin folded a piece of paper in her hand, fanning a gentle breeze. She knitted her brows, seemingly not too fond of the intense weather, and replied with a soft “Mhm.”
“How did you reply?”
Karin looked at the field, her eyes scanning, as if trying to find something. “I said I didn’t know and told them to go back.”
Boli An paused for a moment. “That doesn’t sound like your style of response.”
Karin smiled. “Then what should I have said?”
Boli An said no more. She felt the light filtering through her eyelids as drowsiness slowly crept in.
‘What could be said? The people from God’s Blade only knew that such a pure human was here, but if Karin didn’t say who, none of them could bypass her to search for the person.’
‘Alice Girls’ Academy was ultimately under the jurisdiction of the Empire. Even if they could disregard the Kaos Church, they couldn’t ignore the power behind the Church.’
‘There weren’t many true decision-makers at the academy, and Karin happened to be one of them.’
Boli An mumbled, “Since it’s come to this, I reckon your Empress Mother is going to go crazy again.”
“Tsk, don’t call me out for this kind of thing next time. I hate waiting for people the most.”
After saying that, she fell silent, her breathing becoming steady.
Karin also stopped talking, her eyes focused on a spot in the distance.
The crowd was bustling, erupting in huge cheers from time to time.
The white figure stopped, and many people surrounded her. Many others couldn’t even get close and could only watch her from afar.
Wang Ning held the basketball awkwardly. Her long, snow-white hair was tied up into twin tails with a sky-blue hair tie, and a matching sports headband was wrapped around her forehead.
She tilted her head slightly, and a drop of sweat trickled down her fair cheek, glistening under the sun. Her sweat-dampened long eyelashes fluttered, shielding her shining eyes.
“Show us again, that dribbling skill! That was so cool just now, Student Wang Ning!” a classmate next to her exclaimed, her face red with excitement after screaming.
Wang Ning was surrounded by these girls. She looked at them, a bit at a loss, her eyes widening for a moment—wait, how are all these people taller than her!
‘This is unscientific!’
The surrounded Wang Ning was like a short-legged cat that had wandered into a pack of huskies. She stood perfectly still, trying to use a cold and aloof demeanor to repel the overly boisterous husky army.
She didn’t say a word.
Wang Ning thought she was clearly expressing her refusal, but in the eyes of others, it was—
The white-haired angel was expressionless, calm and unruffled. Her cute and delicate face looked as soft as cotton, unbothered by their unreasonable antics. Those sky-blue eyes just watched them quietly.
Some of the girls’ faces had already started to turn red, and their voices became soft and stuttering.
“If Student Wang Ning doesn’t want to do it, then she doesn’t have to. Why are you all pressuring her?” Some had already switched sides, even turning on the others to absolve themselves.
“You were the loudest one just now, and you have the nerve to call others out!”
“Shut up, you’re the last person who has any right to speak.”
The chaotic mix of voices was like a boiling fish market. Seeing that the situation was about to get out of control, Wang Ning quietly took a step back.
‘This humble servant, upon this retreat, wishes to retreat for a lifetime.’
But the next moment, a familiar voice called out, “Student Wang Ning~,” and a smiling, baby-faced girl appeared before her.
Wang Ning: ‘…It’s over. The one here to stir the pot has arrived.’
Rin Yue and Rin Dong stood on either side of her, leaving Wang Ning with no path to retreat, once again making her the center of attention.
The other students looked at the transfer students who had suddenly appeared and immediately fell silent, no longer arguing.
Wang Ning had noticed that these aristocratic students were very good at comparing their status with others. If they found that their strength and influence were inferior, they would, without exception, subtly create a divide—respecting the strong.
Just like now. With the twin girls standing beside her, the others, though looking displeased, did not act hostile. Instead, they tacitly accepted their position next to Wang Ning.
This was a recognition of their power—after all, wealth could buy thrones, and martial prowess could win brawls. All things considered, not many could do both.
Wang Ning suddenly felt a touch on the hand holding the basketball. She turned her head and saw Rin Yue’s smiling face, her bangs covering one eye, giving her a mysterious look as her other eye watched her.
Before Wang Ning could react, she felt her other hand being touched. Then, going even further than Rin Yue, the hand clamped directly around her wrist. The touch was cool, like being entangled by some kind of cold-blooded creature.
“Let’s go.”
It was two voices, overlapping as one.
Wang Ning didn’t know how she left under everyone’s watchful eyes.
The lush banyan tree cast a large patch of shade. Wang Ning turned to look at the people who had pulled her away.
“What exactly are you trying to do?” Wang Ning was genuinely confused.
So far, they hadn’t made any further attempts to harm or capture her. If Boli An hadn’t told her about their origins, she might have truly believed they had changed their target or had a change of heart.
“Observation,” Rin Yue said slowly. She then looked at the silent Rin Dong and said with a smile, “I say, aren’t you going to let go yet? Big sister.”
Wang Ning’s mouth twitched. She subtly tried to shake her hand free, but the hand holding her wrist remained firm as a mountain. The initially cool touch had been warmed by the prolonged contact.
Rin Dong didn’t seem to think anything was wrong, but she released her grip nonetheless—because a sharp card came flying swiftly toward her wrist.
Wang Ning silently took a step back.
