“Yes, I think that’s exactly what she intends to do.”
The chief sighed again.
“I know Xiaoxiao.
She’s never impulsive, no matter what happens.
She also knows she can’t eliminate an Anomaly on her own, but she definitely hopes to witness its destruction with her own eyes.
Because only then can her family… all the deceased, truly rest in peace.”
“Today’s events have already proven her right.
Yungu City’s Anomaly No. 35 was indeed not eliminated.
You might not know, but the three bodies you discovered at noon weren’t murdered.
They were sui—”
Seeing that the chief was about to recount the day’s events from the beginning, Bai Hai, though reluctant, knew they didn’t have much time to talk in detail.
He had to interrupt.
“Actually, I know about that part.
Suicide, right?
They hacked at each other.”
“You know?”
The chief was taken aback for a moment.
“That’s a detail from the police investigation.
How did you… oh, I see.”
“…I didn’t say anything.”
“Alright, we’ll talk later…”
The chief’s gaze turned serious once more as he looked at the autopsy center.
He whispered, “The crucial thing is whether we can eliminate this Anomaly this time.
If we can’t, then our actions are still meaningless…”
“I agree with Liu Xiaoxiao’s point of view.”
Bai Hai met the surprised chief’s gaze.
Under the watchful eyes of Ye Huasheng and Lilia, he said in a low, firm voice, “Relying solely on the power of magical girls is wrong.
Facts have shown that magical girls cannot solve everything.
They are not humanity’s saviors.
There has never been such a thing as a savior.”
“If humanity doesn’t save itself, no number of magical girls will be of any use.
Human civilization has absolutely not survived to this day by relying on one or two heroes or supermen.
Liu Xiaoxiao hopes to find the Anomaly’s patterns by studying the clues on the corpses… I agree with that.”
“This incident, in essence, happened because you all missed an opportunity.”
Ye Huasheng looked at Bai Hai.
It was the same infuriating theory again.
However, this time, she had no ground, no reason, to refute him.
‘Are magical girls really not all-powerful…?’
For the first time, Ye Huasheng had such a thought.
Pondering along with her was Lilia.
The chief looked at Bai Hai’s serious expression, somewhat surprised by the man’s reaction.
It was clear he wasn’t just saying this because he was moved by the story; he had believed it from the very beginning.
In this era where magical girls were idolized, this man actually didn’t believe in them.
And what no one knew was what Bai Hai was actually thinking: He felt that this whole series of events was extremely strange.
First, the initial deceased (in Xingchuan City) not only all died by bizarre suicides, but they even helped each other commit suicide.
It was as if a high-level entity with a twisted sense of humor was controlling them, making them play a terrifying game of death.
Second, the suicide victims reanimated, and the reanimated corpses attacked the living everywhere.
Based on the previous fight, these corpses seemed to have a particularly strong desire for the brains of the living.
Third, and the strangest point, was that the Source Blood didn’t sound an alarm when the Anomaly controlled them to commit suicide.
It only started warning him when they turned into zombies and attacked people…
Assuming there was an invisible Anomaly behind this, was it not an Anomaly when it manipulated humans to commit suicide, but only became one once the bodies reanimated?
‘Could it be that it needs a human shell to become an Anomaly?
And without a shell… it’s completely harmless?’
Just as Bai Hai seemed to grasp something, he heard a sound from the walkie-talkie on the chief’s chest.
It was a report from another squad:
“Report, basement level one confirmed secure!”
“Report, warehouse confirmed secure!”
“Report, first-floor equipment room confirmed secure.
The network is back online, and the surveillance feed has been restored… All the corpses are gathered on the second floor!”
“Chief, they’re in the corridor right in front of you!”
“ROAR—!“
As soon as the words were spoken, countless roars that seemed to come from hell itself crashed toward them like a tidal wave, echoing throughout the empty corridor.
Everyone immediately assumed a defensive posture, and then they saw it—around the corner of the corridor, a tide of corpses rushing toward them!
“Fire!”
Unlike the zombie hordes in movies, this one didn’t have the overwhelming pressure of a mountain of bodies, because there were only about forty people in the whole building.
However, they possessed a more terrifying pressure than any movie:
They were immune to bullets!
Bullets rained down, knocking over the zombies in the front row.
Most of the zombies rushing from behind were tripped by them.
With human firearms, they successfully stopped the first wave of the assault, avoiding the passive situation often seen in movies.
But the zombies that were knocked down quickly got back up from the ground.
Though they could be knocked down by bullets, they couldn’t be killed.
As long as they weren’t dead, they would reach for the living with their claws and fangs!
And so, the magical girls took action.
When Ye Huasheng first saw this scene, she was a little scared and instinctively wanted to retreat.
Her most feared horror movies were zombie films.
Now, countless bloody and savage corpses had appeared, vivid and real, right before her eyes…
But this time, she wasn’t overwhelmed by fear like she had been this morning.
She steadied her mind in a second and charged forward.
Part of it was because she had witnessed the powerful fighting style of the black magical girl this morning, but a bigger reason was—Bai Hai was here.
She didn’t want to show weakness in front of him, even if he had no idea of her true identity as a magical girl!
With a light shout from the girl, a row of powerful magic blasts shot out.
The terrifying force exploded in the corridor.
The dozen or so zombies at the front were instantly blown to pieces.
The fearsome shockwave ripped through the entire corridor, nearly knocking everyone over!
“Idiot!
Was everything I said to you just now for nothing?
Can you look at where you are before you attack!”
Bai Hai couldn’t help but step forward and slap the back of Ye Huasheng’s head.
He had been quite pleased to see her overcome her fear, but in the next second, she revealed her brainless flaw again—this wasn’t the outdoors, but a narrow corridor!
“Exactly, you idiot!”
Lilia chimed in, scolding her as well, as she dismissed the shield she had placed in front of everyone.
If she hadn’t been quick enough to raise the shield, everyone here would have been sent flying!
“ROAR—!“
“Don’t stop firing!
All squads, converge on the second floor!
Separate these zombies for me!”
The chief was truly a battle-hardened veteran.
Although he was surprised by the magical girl’s immense firepower, he immediately returned to his normal command state and issued a series of orders.
Everyone kept firing, while coordinating with their arriving teammates to separate the group of corpses.
The chief knew very well that the pressure from this group of corpses was terrifying.
They absolutely could not be allowed to act in unison.
Lilia also joined the battlefield at this time, coordinating tacitly with the surrounding police squads: using human firepower to suppress multiple zombies, while Lilia used the simplest binding magic to control them.
Although this spell couldn’t be maintained for long, it was enough for short-term control.
However, Ye Huasheng was an idiot who knew nothing but magic blasts.
She could only watch as Lilia shone here, quickly bringing the situation under control.
The surrounding police officers all looked at her with admiration.
So, not to be outdone, she controlled her magic and released several super-weak magic blasts.
The purpose was no longer to blow them to smithereens, but to suppress them!
Soon, several police squads in critical situations were saved from being grabbed by zombies thanks to Ye Huasheng’s support.
They seized the opportunity to use handcuffs to restrain and control these moving corpses!
All the police officers were in a state of strange excitement.
They had never in their lives imagined that they would one day fight alongside a magical girl!
This was something many people wouldn’t even dare to dream of!
And as Lilia cast her spells, she was also struck by the sentiment of the situation.
She glanced at Bai Hai, who had long since rushed to the very front, single-handedly grappling with many zombies.
The words he had said to Ye Huasheng earlier came to her mind:
‘You magical girls aren’t the only ones in this world fighting Anomalies!’
‘So true!’
At this moment, Ye Huasheng was extremely excited.
For the first time, she discovered that there were fighting methods other than all-out blasting.
By precisely controlling her magic blasts, hitting specific locations, detonating at the right moment, and adjusting the explosive power to achieve suppression and control, this move was extremely useful.
Watching many zombies being controlled with her help, she got the feeling that she was a skilled operator!
This was great!
However, just as she was feeling smug about her super-skilled operation, a dark shadow suddenly pounced.
Ye Huasheng reacted quickly and dodged, but she broke out in a cold sweat—it was a half-shattered skull!
It was one of the zombies she had blown up earlier!
Not only were they not dead, but they were now attacking her in pieces!
Ye Huasheng was thrown into a panic by this terrifying sight, but she quickly regained her senses.
As the skull lifted off the ground to launch another attack, she immediately dodged and fired off a magic blast.
BOOM—
The searing magic blast detonated prematurely.
The resulting shockwave sent the half-skull flying far away.
She still remembered the instructions from Bai Hai and Leng Xuan.
No bombing.
Blowing them into smaller pieces was meaningless.
The only way to deal with them was to control them!
But in the instant she fired the magic blast, another dark shadow pounced from behind her, holding her tight!
“What?”
Ye Huasheng was shocked.
She turned her head and her face paled.
What was holding her was a headless corpse.
An immense strength surged from the rotting torso, restraining her and preventing her from moving!
And almost at the same time, several things that looked like rubber balls leaped from the ground and slammed into the girl’s slender legs.
Ye Huasheng cried out in pain.
She looked down and saw that they were two more zombie heads!
“Get off!”
Ye Huasheng roared and kicked her legs violently, shaking off the two zombie heads that were biting her thighs.
But as she tried to break free from the zombie’s embrace, she suddenly felt a wave of weakness and fell to her knees!
If one could look at her legs, they would see that the two dark bite marks were rapidly festering, as if something was entering her body through the wounds!
“Chengzi!”
Seeing Ye Huasheng in danger, Lilia immediately wanted to break away and help.
But several zombies leaped out from very tricky angles and pounced at her.
If not for a few officers who spotted them in time and immediately opened fire to provide support, she probably would have been caught too!
Ye Huasheng’s attack threw everyone into disarray.
The chief immediately directed people to go and assist her.
However, strangely, the zombies suddenly seemed to have gained intelligence.
They no longer fought randomly but all swarmed over with a single purpose—Ye Huasheng!
Some of the remaining zombies formed a wall of bodies, blocking the police and Lilia, while the rest all pounced on Ye Huasheng.
Ye Huasheng struggled continuously to avoid the zombies’ bites, but more and more of them surrounded her.
Soon, her dress was torn in several places, and dark teeth marks were left on her snow-white skin!
‘No… I have to use magic!’
In her agony, Ye Huasheng raised her magic wand, preparing to conjure a magic blast to destroy all the zombies around her.
But then she suddenly remembered what Bai Hai had said before.
If she cast a spell here, the entire building might be blown up!
‘I should have learned some magic other than magic blasts!’
As Ye Huasheng hesitated, a zombie lunged forward and actually knocked her magic wand out of her hand!
Ye Huasheng watched in despair as her magic wand fell into the horde of corpses.
The light in her eyes completely faded.
Now, even her last hope was gone!
In that critical moment, a figure rushed into the horde, instantly knocking back a dozen zombies.
Before anyone, human or corpse, could react, the figure had already caught Ye Huasheng’s flying magic wand!
It was Bai Hai!
The chief and Lilia’s eyes widened.
They hadn’t seen how Bai Hai moved at all!
“Quick, give it to me!”
Ye Huasheng shouted while pushing away a pouncing zombie.
Her strength was draining faster and faster.
As long as she had her wand in hand, even without using magic, she could at least last a little longer with the wand’s buff!
However, unexpectedly, Bai Hai didn’t hand the magic wand to the magical girl.
Instead, he glanced at the pink wand in his hand, then at the pouncing zombies.
Suddenly, he raised the magic wand high and swung the crystal-embedded end down hard on a zombie’s head!
POW—!
The zombie’s head exploded on impact!
Everyone was too shocked to speak.
Only Ye Huasheng let out a furious, exasperated scream:
“That’s not how you use that thing!!!”
