While Ren Anhua wasn’t too concerned about the supplies in the backpack—after all, her nutritional needs had been drastically reduced thanks to the bio-suit she was wearing. Her primary consumption was still the zombie crystal cores needed to replenish her energy flow, and she had plenty of those. Inside the hoodie, there was a zippered inner pocket filled with high-level crystal cores, and she had more in the small bag she was carrying. For now, she didn’t need to worry about resources.
However, the problem Chen Shu was facing obviously couldn’t be solved by whether Ren Anhua and Shi Mu cared about the resources.
This Aunt Qian didn’t seem to understand the meaning of the word “apocalypse.”
“Shi Mu, this is their internal affair. You don’t need to interfere too much.” Shi Mu, as a lone wanderer, probably didn’t understand the proper position of a leader in a group. But Ren Anhua did, so she felt she should remind Shi Mu not to do more harm than good.
But these words caused Aunt Qian to notice Ren Anhua’s existence. She now realized that Chen Shu had brought back more than just that stinky monk.
“Oh my, Chen Shu, you even brought back a little girl to raise. What are you trying to do? What good is bringing back a little girl? You can’t walk when you see a pretty little girl, can you! She’ll eat all our rice for nothing!” Seeing Ren Anhua, Aunt Qian’s attitude became even worse.
When she saw the small bag Ren Anhua was carrying, a trace of greed emerged from her pure loathing.
“Heh, she’s even carrying a bag and trying to run away. You think you can escape? Come here and let me check. You have to hand in however much you owe. Chen Shu, don’t you dare stop me. I’m doing this all for your own good.” After saying this, Aunt Qian reached out to grab the small bag Ren Anhua was carrying, her movements extremely fast, as if afraid Chen Shu would stop her again.
But before she could even touch the small bag, a bright and shiny watermelon knife was already resting on her neck.
“There aren’t many people who dare to talk to me like that. The dead are the greatest, I’ll give you three sentences for your last words.” Ren Anhua looked at Aunt Qian as if she were looking at a dead person.
“Hey, little girl, how are you talking? You have no respect for your elders!” With the watermelon knife on her neck, feeling ice-cold, Aunt Qian didn’t dare to move.
“One sentence.”
“You’re threatening me? You’re young, but you have quite the temper!”
“Two sentences.”
Aunt Qian didn’t dare to speak. Those star-shaped pupils chilled her to the bone. She didn’t know how such a little girl could give her such terrible pressure. It felt as if the knife on her neck was about to take her life in the next second.
What she didn’t know was that this wasn’t “as if.” Ren Anhua was just looking for a reason to see if she could kill this Aunt Qian. As for leaving her some time for last words, that was just to see Chen Shu’s reaction. Listening to last words wasn’t Ren Anhua’s style.
“Why aren’t you talking? I’m giving you three sentences for your last words, not waiting until you finish saying three sentences before sending you on your way. You have to distinguish between the differences in those two scenarios. You should cherish the precious time and say a few more words. Time is running out.”
Ren Anhua mentally counted down, feeling that it was about time. If Chen Shu defaulted, she wouldn’t mind helping him out.
However, just as she was about to retract her healing field and try to see if she could take off a head directly, she was ultimately stopped by Chen Shu.
“Xiao An, wait. Let her go for now.”
The man who had been told by Aunt Qian not to interfere had finally interfered. Although it was against Aunt Qian’s instructions to “leave me alone,” Aunt Qian obviously wouldn’t be angry with him in this situation.
When the watermelon knife was taken off Aunt Qian’s neck, the middle-aged woman ran away as fast as she could, never mentioning the matter of handing in resources again. This made Ren Anhua a little regretful, but as it was someone else’s internal affairs, Ren Anhua couldn’t interfere. If Chen Shu had defaulted, that would have been one thing, but since Chen Shu had spoken, Ren Anhua could only stop.
“You’re the boss, can’t even decide something like this for yourself. What’s the use of keeping someone like that around? Just get rid of her.” Ren Anhua casually spun the knife handle, the shiny blade making a neat circle in the air, before she hung it back on her waist.
In the past, due to the problems with her ability, she rarely used cold weapons, but in reality, she quite liked these knives, spears, and swords. She often played with them privately, and even before the apocalypse, she had been quite knowledgeable about the use of cold weapons. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have asked Bai Rui to make her a weapon, though what she had ultimately gotten was not what she had imagined.
Regarding Chen Shu’s way of handling things, Ren Anhua was very puzzled. In her eyes, subordinates who were this wild basically had no reason to be kept alive.
Looking at the means of this pink-haired one, Chen Shu now realized that he might not have saved an ordinary person.
“We’re not some kind of gang. We can’t just kill people whenever we want. That’s a human life,” Chen Shu tried to instill a good outlook on life and a good set of values in this girl, but the word “gang” seemed to repel the girl.
‘Why are we a gang?’ Ren Anhua often had this question in her heart. It had been this way in the past, and it was this way now.
“Aunt Qian has some issues, but when people make mistakes, they should be given a chance to correct them. I believe that the people in the Mutual Aid Society are all good people. They’re not bad by nature. It’s just that the anxiety about survival makes them do some irrational things and say some irrational words. Things won’t be like this once the situation stabilizes.”
Ren Anhua couldn’t agree with Chen Shu’s statement. Everyone had anxiety about survival, and the apocalypse wouldn’t favor anyone. Since the world was already difficult, going to the trouble of considering other people’s anxiety about survival was basically not treating oneself as a human, it was more like becoming a Buddha on the spot. But even Shi Mu, Ren Anhua felt, wouldn’t do this to that extent.
This Chen Shu, was probably being kind to a fault. Ren Anhua decided to ask him again to be sure.
“When you go out to collect resources, how do you distribute them? Surely it’s not just the three of you I saw with you that go?”
“It’s not just us. There are a lot of people in the Mutual Aid Society. We can’t feed everyone with just the four of us. There are still some other resource collection teams, but my team definitely goes out the most and collects the most.” Chen Shu had a silly, proud look on his face, making Ren Anhua feel inexplicably helpless.
Collecting resources was, on a grand scale, the foundation for survival in the apocalypse. On a smaller scale, it was just picking up some things and bringing them back. From Chen Shu’s words, he seemed to be the leader of the Mutual Aid Society. A leader who ran out and risked his life every day, braving the risk of being bitten by a horde of zombies to collect resources to feed his group of subordinates—however you looked at it, it felt strange. Especially when combined with Aunt Qian’s attitude toward Chen Shu, it made Ren Anhua feel it was laughable.
When Ren Anhua was the boss of the East Suburbs, she would only take action if she encountered matters that her subordinates couldn’t handle or when extremely important cases were involved. Apart from the early days of the apocalypse, she basically never personally collected resources. Unless she encountered a large amount of resources that caused disputes, or if there were strong enemies or mutated beasts guarding it, might she appear.
The rest of the time, she mostly handled internal affairs or developed her own ability. Even when bored and playing with knives privately, it was impossible for her to go out and collect resources. However, no one in the camp dared to say anything to him or ask Ren Anhua to go out and find them food to feed them. These people couldn’t afford that kind of treatment.
To confirm her thoughts, Ren Anhua decided to ask again, to see what the size of this Mutual Aid Society was. Although the apocalypse had been going on for more than two months now, what if they were still in an early organizational stage? If that was the case, then even if the leader went out every day and fought zombies to feed his subordinates, it would still make a little sense.
After all, the foundation for survival was the group, and if the group was small, it was only right to take the lead. When Ren Anhua only had twenty or thirty people, she had to lead the team out to search for supplies every day.
“How many people are there in your Mutual Aid Society now?”
“I haven’t counted carefully, but roughly, there should be three or four hundred people.”
Ren Anhua didn’t want to continue the conversation. Anyway, her decision to temporarily stay in this Mutual Aid Society was just to find out what that “Survivor Camp” and its leader, “Ren Anhua,” were all about. This deformed mess that was the Mutual Aid Society, Chen Shu could manage it. If he wanted to be the good person, Ren Anhua wouldn’t bother stopping him.
The conversation with Chen Shu ended on a sour note. On the other hand, Shi Mu got along with him quite well. Under Chen Shu’s polite refusals, Shi Mu gave him 40% of their resources. Canned fish, compressed biscuits—these were all very valuable things in the apocalypse. However, Ren Anhua didn’t care about these things, and Shi Mu didn’t care either.
Shi Mu and Chen Shu chatted happily, perhaps because Chen Shu’s “good” nature was deeply approved by Shi Mu. After all, Shi Mu often “persuaded people to do good,” and now that he had met someone who didn’t need him to persuade him, he was obviously very happy.
The two chatted as they went to select a new residence.
