Li Yue covertly opened the basement door, clutching a golden baseball bat as she cautiously peered outside.
The wail of sirens still pierced the air, and the accomplices from the two additional cars of kidnappers had already been escorted into police vehicles.
Noticing Li Yue’s furtive glance, the grey-haired policewoman, umbrella in hand, walked directly towards her.
Gongliang Kuixi.
‘Tsk, why her of all people?’
‘And how did the police even get here?’
Li Yue couldn’t recall having alerted the police herself; after all, the kidnappers had threatened to kill the hostages if the authorities were alerted, and surely neither Mo Changhong nor Miss Dong Lu would have secretly contacted them.
‘How exactly did this policewoman track them down?’
Despite her lingering questions, she stepped forward to meet the officer, realizing there was no avoiding the situation now.
Gongliang Kuixi’s uniform appeared freshly changed; while the sky-blue fabric seemed relatively dry, her hair and inner garments were completely soaked, causing a damp hue to seep through from within, an unfortunate sight.
She, however, seemed unfazed, simply placing her hands on her hips as she inquired:
“Well, well, golden-haired lass, why aren’t you running anymore?”
As she spoke, she shifted closer to Alezno, extending her umbrella to cover the latter’s head.
“This time, I’ll pass. I’m out of stamina.”
Li Yue, having finally caught her breath, felt utterly drained; it was a miracle she hadn’t simply collapsed.
However, with Mo Linyu herself having to lean against a wall for support, Li Yue knew she couldn’t possibly rely on her.
Gongliang Kuixi said, “Care to step into my car? I have many questions I’d like to clarify…”
Li Yue, an undocumented resident, immediately recoiled at the suggestion.
“The front of your car is completely crumpled. You should probably send it for repairs first.”
It seemed she was the one who had led the charge, ramming into the kidnappers.
‘Apparently, she wasn’t just a police officer, but also an irritable female driver with road rage.’
As Li Yue replied, Kuixi produced a pair of handcuffs from behind her back.
“Hey, don’t even think about leaving.”
Li Yue took half a step back, then, with a breathless shout, protested, “Are you serious? I came to save people! Those guys lying on the ground are the kidnappers, and you’re trying to handcuff me?”
“What gives you the right to rescue people? Do you think you’re mercenaries? Or Heroes?”
“No, I am the Hero.”
Li Yue declared this, tightening her grip on the baseball bat, yet as the words left her mouth, she found them somewhat embarrassing.
“A foolish little girl, completely unaware of her own limitations.”
Kuixi scoffed at this, stating disdainfully, “Hmph, you wield a baseball bat and dare to call yourself a Hero? Well, I might as well call myself the Demon Lord then!”
In response, Mo Linyu merely smiled, remaining silent.
Kuixi, one hand on her hip, lectured, “You’re not only reckless with your own life, but you also brought that girl, Su Luoli, to a place like this. That little girl is only quick on her feet; how could she possibly… And you’re holding a bow? Do you even know how to use that thing? Give it to me!”
Her tone was laced with concern, and she snatched the compound bow directly from Alezno’s hands.
“She shoots incredibly accurately,” Li Yue replied.
“Both of you, get in the car and explain the full story to me!”
But just as she spoke, several luxurious black sedans pulled up outside the construction site.
Li Yue instantly felt a surge of relief, as if she had spotted a lifeline.
“It’s Miss Dong Lu and her people.”
Gongliang Kuixi, who seemed to have some prior knowledge of the kidnapping case, then turned her gaze to Mo Linyu.
“It seems, then, that you are the eldest daughter of President Mo’s family?”
“Hello, Officer. I am Mo Linyu… You possess a unique aura. I would like to find an opportunity to speak with you privately later.”
“Hm? You’re too kind. Your true heroes should be these two, but I still need to take them back for a statement.”
To Gongliang Kuixi, Mo Linyu’s words sounded like mere polite pleasantries, but Li Yue, however, discerned a different meaning.
The smile on Mo Linyu’s face bore no resemblance to that of a young lady who had just been rescued; although she bore some injuries, she showed no signs of weakness, which prompted Li Yue to eye her chest suspiciously.
‘[She’s an otherworldly soul too.]’
‘[Sure enough, otherworldly souls are drawn to each other, aren’t they?]’
Li Yue immediately regarded the policewoman before her with a gaze of surprise and unfamiliarity, beginning to wonder who exactly this woman was.
Gongliang Kuixi felt a shiver run down her spine under Li Yue’s intense stare.
Just then, Dong Lu, leading a group of black-suited bodyguards, walked through the police tape and entered the area.
“Miss, it’s truly wonderful that you’re unharmed.”
“Thanks to them, I’m perfectly fine.”
Only then did Dong Lu turn her gaze to Li Yue and Alezno, before glancing at the kidnappers, who were being gathered by the police in the distance.
“Miss Li Yue, did you resolve all of this by yourself? I distinctly asked you to wait for us before taking any action, didn’t I?”
Though a slight complaint escaped her lips, a thought surfaced in her mind.
‘[Miss Li Yue… could she truly be some kind of cultivator?]’
“Ale… oh no, Su Luoli also helped me a great deal.”
Li Yue placed a hand on Su Luoli’s shoulder and boasted, “She risked her life to rescue Mo Linyu, while I merely distracted the kidnappers.”
Alezno sighed softly, “You were the one in the most danger, weren’t you? Those guys had staves in their hands.”
“Staves?”
Gongliang Kuixi, hearing the strange term, furrowed her brow.
“They mean guns.”
Mo Linyu explained, drawing two dangerous handguns from her lower back.
“To cover Li Yue, I tried firing a few shots down below as practice, but the caliber was too small; it wasn’t quite satisfying.”
Then, holding them by the muzzle, she offered them butt-first to Gongliang Kuixi.
“…You few really have some nerve,” Kuixi remarked with a sigh.
She had initially thought only Li Yue and Su Luoli were unique, but it turned out even this young lady was so… unconventional?
She checked the safety mechanisms of the firearms, then tucked them into her pocket.
“My apologies, Officer.”
Mo Linyu added, “I will be taking Li Yue with me. I’m afraid she cannot go back with you to give a statement.”
Gongliang Kuixi, however, replied, “That won’t do. The proper procedures must still be followed.”
‘If they followed protocol, wouldn’t Li Yue’s undocumented status be immediately exposed?’
Seeing that Gongliang Kuixi wouldn’t budge, Mo Linyu seized the opportunity to suggest, “In that case, Officer, perhaps you would care to visit my humble abode? We, too, are eager to understand the full circumstances of this event.”
“Su Luoli” nodded vigorously in agreement; after all, Mo Linyu had only said she would take Li Yue, and “Su Luoli,” lacking the genuine Su Luoli’s memories, wouldn’t know how to proceed if left to depart with Gongliang Kuixi.
Conversely, if they could ascertain who “Su Luoli’s” past self was, and even secure Gongliang Kuixi’s assistance, perhaps Li Yue’s issue as an undocumented resident might not be insurmountable.
Before all that, however, Li Yue still had a question.
“So, was it Miss Dong Lu who called the police?”
“With the Young Miss in such a perilous situation, how could we possibly dare to call the police?”
Dong Lu naturally shook her head in denial, sighing, “I don’t even know why the police arrived faster than us… The Master wouldn’t dare to secretly alert them either…”
Everyone turned to Gongliang Kuixi for confirmation, but the latter merely scratched her head with an embarrassed expression.
“Ah? I was just following this girl, after all. I’m responsible for bringing her back.”
As she spoke, she gave Alezno a somewhat rough tug closer to her.
“When you left the compound on your motorcycle, I was following you the entire way.”
“…A police car was following us?”
