Seeing Fú Nī Yà remain unresponsive for an extended period, Albert asked, puzzled.
“Yes, what is it?”
“Uh… you’re the Fourth Imperial Prince, right?”
Pulled from her reverie by Albert, Fú Nī Yà scratched her cheek as she asked.
“Of course I am.”
Albert’s brow furrowed.
Fú Nī Yà had been with him for quite some time; how could she possibly not know his rank within the imperial family? Albert found it difficult not to suspect her of deliberately provoking him.
“Don’t look at me like that!”
Noticing Albert’s displeased expression, Fú Nī Yà quickly explained, “I just suddenly thought of someone…”
“Someone? Who?”
“Zhu Di (TL Note: Zhu Di, or the Yongle Emperor, was the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty in China. He seized the throne from his nephew, the Jianwen Emperor, after a civil war, and led campaigns from the north to the south).”
“Judy?”
Due to the pronunciation, the name Albert uttered was distinctly different from Fú Nī Yà’s.
He tilted his head, indicating he had never heard of such a person.
“Yes, Zhu Di,” Fú Nī Yà said, her expression subtle. “He was also ranked fourth in his family, also attacked from north to south, and also seized the throne from his nephew…”
“How have I never heard of such a thing?”
“Cough, cough, that’s a minor detail,” Fú Nī Yà said, clearing her throat. “Continue, please continue…”
Seeing Fú Nī Yà’s reluctance to elaborate, Albert, with a displeased expression, resumed recounting the story of his life before his rebirth.
This included his raising an army with the support of local nobles, unifying the North through a series of battles, and ultimately, suffering defeat in Saint Mir City due to Fú Nī Yà’s ‘friendly’ betrayal.
“Eh? Why would I have done that back then?”
Fú Nī Yà asked, confused.
Albert then proceeded to explain Fú Nī Yà’s fate in his previous life.
This included being bought and abused by others, her eventual death and disposal in a mass grave, being picked up by a necromancer, then turning the tables to kill the necromancer herself, becoming a legendary lich, and subsequently storming Saint Mir City for revenge—incidentally wiping out his own army in the process.
“Ah? Was I really that miserable?”
Fú Nī Yà couldn’t help but reveal a look of astonishment.
Furthermore, judging by her talents, personality, and methods of action in that past life, she was undeniably Fú Nī Yà herself, not some timid predecessor.
‘It seems Albert’s rebirth had a higher priority than my own transmigration…’
The young woman mused to herself.
Concurrently, upon witnessing Fú Nī Yà’s reaction, Albert nodded and said.
“Indeed, it was precisely that tragic.”
Having received Albert’s affirmative reply, Fú Nī Yà couldn’t help but angrily wave her fists.
“That fellow Kǎ Dá Lā is truly despicable, to do such things to purchased female slaves! Albert, aren’t you going to kill him?”
“Do you wish to exact revenge on him?” Albert inquired. “To avenge the Calamity Witch of your previous life?”
“Not really,” Fú Nī Yà replied, shaking her head. “After all, that was a matter of a past life, and the Kǎ Dá Lā of that life already paid with his own. In this life, I haven’t suffered any abuse from him, and your extortion of a hundred thousand gold coins from him, Albert, is quite enough. He currently harbors no thoughts of retaliation against you, and pushing him further would only turn public opinion against you.”
“Then what do you intend to do?”
“To rescue the female slaves he abused and punish him for his perverted actions.”
“They are merely a few female slaves; what significance does it hold?” Albert questioned.
“Female slaves are people too!”
“Slaves are merely personal property,” Albert corrected, then added, “Of course, Fú Nī Yà, you are different; your s*ave status has already been revoked.”
“So, you won’t save them?”
“Why would I save them when I have nothing better to do?” Albert asked, sighing as he stroked Fú Nī Yà’s head. “However, if you truly wish for me to save them, then, of course, I will.”
“You—”
Fú Nī Yà’s eyes widened, wanting to unleash a torrent of curses, but ultimately, her inner indignation transformed into a helpless sigh.
Albert’s perspective was, in the context of this world, entirely unproblematic.
Slaves were their masters’ private property.
Albert’s worldview was that of a noble; even if he treated her with equality, it was due to the talents she displayed and the fact that she had defeated him in a previous life, not because he held beliefs of universal equality.
The one in error was not Albert, but Fú Nī Yà herself.
It was her thoughts, so utterly incompatible with this world, that were the problem.
‘But what could she do?’
‘Abandon the notions from her past life and embrace this world as a matter of course?’
‘To view slaves as mere property, just like everyone else in this otherworld?’
Fú Nī Yà remained silent.
After a long while, under Albert’s questioning gaze, Fú Nī Yà raised her head, her expression complex, and sighed.
“Finish telling me about your previous life…”
Though Albert didn’t comprehend the reason behind Fú Nī Yà’s intense reaction, he nonetheless completed the story of his former life.
Ultimately, upon hearing Albert declare his desire to alter the future destiny of this land and save its deceased populace, the young woman couldn’t help but challenge him.
“Do the female slaves abused by Kǎ Dá Lā not count as people?”
“Of course not; how could slaves be considered people?” Albert stated, as if it were obvious.
“Then who are these people you intend to save?”
“Naturally, the two hundred and fifty million who perished in the wars.”
Hearing this, Fú Nī Yà finally succumbed to her inner irritation and retorted sarcastically to Albert.
“You, who are unwilling to save a mere few dozen female slaves right before your eyes, claim you will save two hundred and fifty million people? My Fourth Imperial Prince, aren’t you being a bit too grandiose?”
“I told you, they are merely slaves!”
Sensing the sarcasm in Fú Nī Yà’s words, Albert’s tone grew somewhat impatient.
“No one is born a s*ave!” Fú Nī Yà pressed on. “What if Emperor Uther suddenly demoted all two hundred and eighty million people of the Holy Lohiris Empire to slaves? Would you still go and save them then!?”
“That’s sophistry!”
“No, you are!” Fú Nī Yà cut off Albert. “You’ve never once considered ordinary people, merely indulging in a ridiculous hero’s dream! What you want to save is the Holy Lohiris Empire’s fragile glory, not its populace. You take pride in its current splendor and resent its future decline, yet you have never cared about a single ordinary person living on this land!”
“Enough!”
“Not enough!” Fú Nī Yà challenged. “If the Holy Lohiris Empire remained the strongest nation on the continent in the future, even if only one in ten of its people survived, would you truly care then!?”
“I…”
Albert was suddenly speechless.
Because, having imagined the scenario Fú Nī Yà described, he realized… he genuinely wouldn’t care.
“I truly misjudged you half a month ago, believing you would save others for compassionate reasons.” Fú Nī Yà’s expression showed a hint of disappointment as she let out a breath. “What I came here to say now seems unnecessary…”
“What did you want to say?”
Albert asked, looking up.
“To have Aila’s Swan Knights temporarily halt their encroachment upon the barbarians, and simultaneously, to ask that once you become emperor, you end the slaughter and invasion of the barbarians.”
“They are merely a group of barbarians…” Albert frowned. “If they die, they die.”
Witnessing Albert utter such heartless words repeatedly, Fú Nī Yà finally lost her composure, pointing at her pointed ears as she articulated each word distinctly.
“I… am… a… barbarian!”
