Even though nearly four years had passed, Xiaoyu could still clearly recall the last day she spent with her sister.
It was as if it had only happened yesterday.
It was a dusk when the two sisters took a bus after school to a nearby forest park and climbed a small hill, only a few dozen meters high.
Her sister was a fervent mountaineer, usually dragging Xiaoyu to the highest point of this town for lunch during the lunch break, and during holidays, she would persuade their father to take the whole family to famous mountain ranges around the world for tourism, which was unbearable for Xiaoyu, who had no talent for sports.
The weather that day was excellent, with not a cloud in sight. The sisters sat in a small pavilion at the top of the hill.
The setting sun in the west was slowly sinking, painting the sky and the boundary of the earth in an orange-red hue.
Although she also had smooth pink hair, her sister chose to tie it into a ponytail for convenient exercise, while her younger sister just let it down. Both looked as beautiful as goddesses.
“Sister, aren’t you going to have your final exams tomorrow?”
Gasping heavily, Xiaoyu leaned her back against the pillar in the pavilion, hugging a cat-patterned schoolbag,
“How about, we go back early today and review the lessons?”
“It is precisely because there are such challenges tomorrow that we must completely relax our bodies today.”
Facing away from her, her sister stretched out a big lazy waist towards the setting sun,
“This way, we can adjust our mentality and be able to cope calmly in the face of big storms and waves.”
“…But Sister usually participates in club activities outside, I remember the last exam, because of failing, the teacher came to our house to vi…”
“Eh eh eh? No, don’t say that about me!” Turning around in panic, the pink ponytail girl’s face had turned as red as the setting sun, it was hard to tell whether it was from the latter’s brilliance or from her own shyness,
“I, I didn’t fail the exam because of that. There, there were clearly some other reasons…”
“Hmph, Sister, stop pretending there.” Unhappily pouting her small mouth, Xiaoyu, looking like a little adult, put her schoolbag to one side,
“I heard it clearly in the house, you kept apologizing to the teacher, saying that you will definitely reduce some hunting activities in the future, and spend more time on studying and so on.”
“By the way, what club do you even participate in, Sister? There are actually hunting activities of some sort, you refuse to tell me, isn’t it some kind of shady business?”
“How, how could that be?”
Looking at her younger sister who was staring at her with a sinister look, the other person looked terrified, saying that she wasn’t, didn’t have any of that, and was waving her hands, dripping with sweat.
Then, suddenly, her eyes lit up: “We… we are just… that… fish! Right! Right! Right!
We are actually the fishing club, we often go to the lakes in the suburbs to fish for all kinds of delicious and juicy fish!
It’s just that we thought of a more domineering name and called it hunting!”
“Really…” Looking at her sister with a doubtful face, she just couldn’t help but feel that it wasn’t the truth,
“In short, whatever you do, you must pass the exam tomorrow, oh.
The teacher said in that home visit that if Sister fails this final exam again, she won’t be able to enter high school.”
“Failing…”
Hearing this topic, the pink ponytail girl was stunned for a moment, and then turned to look at the setting sun in the distance:
“If we really only need to worry about this small matter, then it would be so great.”
“What do you mean by small matter?”
Looking at her sister’s back, feeling angry, Xiaoyu walked forward and grabbed her JK skirt:
“Even a first-grade elementary school student like me knows that failing an exam is a very, very terrifying thing, how can you look down on it like this, Sister?”
“Terrifying thing, huh?”
Muttering this sentence to herself, the pink ponytail girl suddenly burst out laughing: “Yes, yes, it’s a very terrifying thing, very very…”
“Then Sister, don’t look at the sun here, go back quickly.”
She wanted to drag her sister back home, but she was caught by the other person’s backhand.
“Xiaoyu,”
Still gazing at the setting sun in the distance, the pink ponytail girl’s voice suddenly added a trace of melancholy: “If the sun doesn’t rise tomorrow, what will you do?”
“Ah, what?”
Xiaoyu didn’t react for a moment, standing there blankly: “But… isn’t it written in the books that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west every day?”
“I know.”
The pink ponytail girl responded in a low tone, like an elderly person suffering from a terminal illness:
“But, Xiaoyu, suppose, just suppose, that one day the sun will never rise again, then what will you do?”
“Sister… are you okay? Eh??”
Walking a few steps forward and coming to the front of the other person, she was horrified to find that her ever-energetic sister was already in tears, she didn’t know when this started.
“What, what happened? Is it because the exam tomorrow is too difficult, or did bad people bully Sister?”
Xiaoyu was really scared and instinctively wanted to take a few steps back, but found that her hand was still firmly held by the other person, and it was impossible to break free.
The pink ponytail girl didn’t reply anything, just released her sister’s hand, and dropped to her knees on the stone brick ground, starting to sob slightly.
“Sister! Sister!”
The poor girl was at a loss in the face of this sudden situation, standing in place at a loss, trembling with fear, not knowing what to do.
But soon, she stepped forward and hugged her sister.
“I don’t know why Sister is crying,” Xiaoyu tried hard to learn from her sister’s usual way of comforting others, her voice was young and gentle:
“But for Xiaoyu, the sun will definitely rise tomorrow, even if it doesn’t come on time, it’s just late.
What I will do is patiently wait for the moment when the sun rises again!”
“Is that so…” The sister who had stopped sobbing lowered her head silently, as if she was thinking about something, “Xiaoyu, do you think so?”
“Yes!” Xiaoyu’s eyes began to glisten with tears, she nodded firmly,
“Didn’t Sister always teach me like this? I will always think like this, I believe Sister will also think like this, right?”
“But… you’re wrong, Xiaoyu…”
The pink ponytail girl in front of her raised her head and stared at the other person with blood-red, murky eyes.
!!
The sudden change startled Xiaoyu, and she stepped back a few steps, but missed her step and almost fell to the ground.
Turning around, she was horrified to find that: The setting sun that was still on the horizon had been replaced by a blood-colored full moon, the tranquil and peaceful town in the distance was already full of ruins and bloodstains, and this park only had endless withered grass and white bones.
“The sun will no longer rise again.”
And when she turned her head again, she was confronted with her sister’s empty eyes.
Her whole body was exuding blood, and she was approaching herself step by step.
“The sun will not be late, because the sun no longer exists, what’s left is only endless darkness, covering the earth, turning everything into desolation, nothing will be left!!”
Reaching out her bloodstained hands and grabbing Xiaoyu, she shook the other person violently, almost breaking her bones.
“Sister… no, don’t be like this… I, where am I… where is this place… who can save me!”
“No one can save you!”
Panting heavily, pulling the other person closer, the face of the pink-haired ponytail girl was contorted wildly, and within a few seconds, she transformed into another familiar figure.
“It’s foolish to place hope on the sun that no longer exists! It’s a suicidal act of idiocy!” Kim Erise grabbed Xiaoyu’s throat, and gritted out the words from between her red and white teeth:
“There has never been any savior, the only one we can rely on is ourselves! If the sun won’t rise, then we will force it to rise! If the sun no longer exists, then we will recreate a sun! E
ven if this sun is not as beautiful as the previous one, even if this sun has no light, even if this sun is as endless as the abyss, we must create it, and nail it to the sky, so that the black sun will forever fall upon the earth, and never betray our hope again!”
Crack——
The sound of her throat breaking was clearly heard, and the terrifying face in front of her opened a mouth filled with sharp teeth like a lamprey, and bit down viciously!
“No, ah ah ah ah——”
When Xiaoyu came to her senses again, she found herself lying on a soft bed, still wearing the pink and white Lolita dress she had bought before, but it was already soaked with cold sweat.
“What’s wrong?”
The bedroom door was quickly pushed open, and Mo, wearing a JK, strode in, still holding a half-eaten stick of candied haws in her hand: “What happened?”
“Ah, no, nothing…” Realizing that she was at Kim Erise’s home, Xiaoyu breathed a sigh of relief, and wiped the sweat beads covering her forehead, “I just… had a nightmare…”
“Then, breakfast is ready, in the microwave in the kitchen.”
“Ah? Oh, thank you, Mo-jie…”
The silver-haired girl walked straight out of the bedroom, gently closing the door, and didn’t even wait for the other person to finish speaking.
The pink-haired girl, who had calmed down, began to look around the bedroom, and found that it was not much different from the one she had tried in the furniture store before, and even had quite a few starry sky-themed oil paintings and hanging decorations on the wall, as well as an astronomical telescope placed on the other side of the bedside, next to the floor-to-ceiling window with hollowed-out star curtains.
Ah, the ideal room she had longed for so many times in her dreams, had finally become a reality.
“Sister Erise, it’s so nice…”
Thinking of the handsome red-haired girl who had gently taken her out of the refugee area and bought her so many things, Xiaoyu, sitting on the bed, covered her mouth and showed a foolish smile.
Then, the nightmare she had just had made her heart skip a beat.
Why, would she have such a strange dream… It was so similar to the memories she had of spending the last time with her sister, but in the end, it was twisted into that way?
And what concerned her the most, was that sun mentioned in the dream.
That black sun.
Was it just the whims of her dream, or was there some unspoken hint?
