Under the dim glow of the streetlights, Chloe walked homeward, her mood significantly lighter than when she had set out. A buoyant energy filled her, making her want to skip a few steps, even prompting an impulse to kick at a roadside stone. Her golden hair swayed and bounced, a shimmering wave with each movement.
Every so often, a few lights flickered erratically, their faulty connections casting an unsettling, almost eerie ambiance.
As she reached a particular stretch, an entire section of streetlights lay defunct. Chloe, feeling a wave of exasperation, was just reaching for her phone to illuminate her path when, from the utterly black sky, a scattering of starlight suddenly shimmered into existence. She tilted her head back, blinking in a puzzled manner.
Are those stars?
In this city, it was typically difficult to discern stars with the naked eye; could it be that the remoteness of this area allowed them to shine through?
No, wait, why are they growing brighter?
Within her golden eyes, the luminous points intensified, their brilliance growing until they almost illuminated her entire field of vision. Blinking against the sudden glare, Chloe instinctively raised a hand to shield her eyes, peering through the slits between her fingers.
It was only when the intense light finally receded that she could clearly discern the identities of the newcomers.
“You all… how did you end up here?”
The sudden arrival of Nelly, Aurora, and Izha, all in their magical girl forms, left Chloe feeling utterly flusttered and at a loss for words. She was particularly apprehensive about Aurora and Izha, uncertain if they had truly accepted her into their team.
Nelly stepped forward first, her attire befitting her assassin role: a sleek black dress with a notably short hem and understated embellishments. The main garment resembled a form-fitting bodysuit, designed for effortless movement and exuding an aura of agile efficiency.
“We have been dispatched by the Watchtower to undertake a mission concerning the Lily High School attack, operating as a small unit. As you were present during the incident and are now a new member of our team, you are required to join us on this assignment.”
Nelly’s demeanor while outlining the mission was utterly serious, devoid of the gentle, older sister persona she had presented during their first encounter. Instead, she embodied the authoritative bearing of a true captain.
Chloe, however, found herself riddled with questions. “How did you manage to pinpoint my exact location? This area is so incredibly remote…”
Nelly retrieved her phone from her pocket; it was currently vibrating with a high-pitched hum that echoed through the night like the wail of a tormented spirit. With a slight movement of her finger, she pressed a switch, and the device instantly fell silent.
“The phones of teammates are equipped with a differential positioning program,” Nelly explained. “We located you via navigation. This place… it truly is quite isolated.”
“We were starting to wonder if you’d been kidnapped by human traffickers!” Aurora, who had been standing behind them, chimed in with a teasing laugh.
“Kidnapped by human traffickers? I’m not a child!” Chloe retorted indignantly, detecting the teasing undertone in Aurora’s words.
“Aurora, perhaps a little less chatter,” Nelly chided, casting a disapproving glance at the girl behind her. She then turned, her hand instinctively reaching out to pat Chloe’s head, only to pull it back midway, remembering the gravity of their current mission. After a discreet cough, she continued, “Do you know where Wolf Fang and Magic Sword are? They were undoubtedly involved in the incident, yet the Watchtower has been unable to reach them. Our superiors are utterly frantic over this.”
“Night Moon and Tia? Weren’t they at the school? Or perhaps they’re at home? Why can’t they be reached?”
When Chloe had departed the infirmary, both of them had seemed perfectly fine.
“Could something have happened to them?” The sudden, chilling thought caused Chloe’s heart to pound violently within her chest, her entire being tensing with alarm.
Should she lose these two individuals, the ones she knew best, Chloe genuinely couldn’t fathom how she would continue to live.
“No, that’s unlikely,” Nelly reassured her, her voice as calm as still water, sensing the anxiety in Chloe’s tone. “Tia is a Tier Seven, and Night Moon is a powerful Tier Four. It’s highly improbable that something would happen to them that would prevent even a single message from being sent. It must be some other reason entirely… after all, both of them possess rather unique personalities.”
“Do you know anything about the incident? The Watchtower’s data indicates you were present at the school during that time.”
“Are there any casualty figures?” Chloe countered, her own question overriding a direct answer.
“Hmm… let me check. One fatality, which is within the acceptable range.”
“What was that person’s name?” Chloe found herself inexplicably anxious to know, a subconscious feeling telling her that individual held significant importance.
“I apologize, but I don’t have the authorization to access specific details.”
“Alright…” Chloe murmured, her head drooping in disappointment as a wave of dejection washed over her. Nelly, observing the girl’s sudden shift in mood, wisely chose to remain silent, allowing Chloe a moment to compose herself.
“Captain?” Aurora’s voice from behind them suddenly halted, and she called out to Nelly with a curious inflection.
Nelly did not turn, merely waved a dismissive hand to signal that everything was fine.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Chloe gathered her resolve, sweeping the stray strands of hair from her face behind her ear. “That demon was incredibly powerful,” she stated. “Night Moon was rendered unconscious after confronting it, and Tia was the one who managed to rescue her. Even then, they couldn’t truly defeat the creature.”
Nelly nodded, then lowered her head, lost in thought. Behind her, both Aurora and Izha furrowed their brows upon hearing this crucial information.
“Then your assistance becomes even more vital,” Nelly concluded after a prolonged moment of contemplation. “With your demon-slaying power, our chances will be significantly more secure. I, along with Aurora and Izha, are all Tier Four magical girls. With your addition, confronting a unique Tier Five demon should not pose an insurmountable challenge.”
Chloe, however, voiced an immediate objection. “Night Moon is a Tier Four, and even she couldn’t defeat it. Can we… can we truly succeed?”
Part of her skepticism stemmed from Chloe’s lack of understanding regarding the power disparity between different tiers. If Night Moon, a powerful magical girl, couldn’t overcome the demon, could merely adding more individuals truly secure a victory?
“Ah, but you wouldn’t understand how it works,” Aurora said with a smile, stepping closer to elaborate. “Once a team is formed, the magical girls within it can specialize more effectively in their preferred combat styles and coordinate seamlessly with their teammates. This synergy typically allows them to achieve results far beyond their individual tiers. For instance, a team of Tier Four magical girls can often operate at a Tier Six level. Of course, since you are only Tier One, it remains to be seen if you can achieve such an effect.”
“Indeed,” Nelly added, “and this mission assignment was made by the Watchtower after thorough data analysis. Given that it has been entrusted to us, it fundamentally implies that we possess the capability to handle it.”
“That’s not entirely accurate, though…”
Izha, who rarely spoke, interjected with a subtle hint of disdain etched across her features.
Upon hearing Izha’s unexpected comment, both Nelly and Aurora’s expressions abruptly turned solemn. The flickering streetlights seemed to mirror their unease, casting restless shadows.
“Um, but we haven’t… we haven’t quite synergized yet, have we?” Chloe ventured cautiously.
For a team to achieve the synergy where the whole truly exceeds the sum of its parts, a prerequisite was seamless coordination and mutual trust among its members. Yet, Chloe currently had no inkling of their specific abilities, nor did she feel a foundation of trust.
“We cannot afford to wait until every single preparation is complete,” Nelly stated without hesitation, her words carrying a stark, almost brutal honesty. “We will synergize during this very first mission; practical combat will prove to be the most effective teacher.”
Nelly’s words, delivered without a hint of wavering, were remarkably harsh, yet it was clear she had thoroughly considered this dilemma prior to their arrival. The mission’s urgency was paramount; if the demon wasn’t dispatched swiftly, countless more casualties were certain to follow.
“I understand…”
Chloe found herself profoundly affected by Nelly’s fervent sense of mission and unwavering dedication as a magical girl. She felt a spark ignite within her, as if the very blood in her veins was warming.
Furthermore, the lingering memory of accidentally causing the deaths of innocent civilians clung to her mind like an incessant nightmare, a constant, tormenting presence.
To atone for that irreparable mistake, she knew her only recourse was to dedicate herself even more fully to a righteous cause…
“I am Magical Girl Chloe! Please guide me from this point forward!”
