“How was it?”
‘Did I do well?’ whispered Kang-woo with a playful smile.
He was the one who beat him up and disguised it as a traffic accident, yet he remained composed the whole time.
“Uh-huh.”
Hee-woon nodded.
And he thought:
Seo Kang-woo is a madman.
Therefore, trying to guess the reason for the assault is unnecessary.
No matter what the reason, the one who committed that assault was Seo Kang-woo, and it has absolutely nothing to do with him.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
At Kang-woo’s words, Hee-woon shook his head, indicating it was nothing.
While the next group was preparing for their presentation and things were chaotic, he heard the sound of underclassmen whispering behind him.
“Hey.”
“Did you hear about that? They say Hyeok-jin sunbae is hospitalized in a VIP room.”
“He didn’t seem like it, but is he kinda rich?”
“Isn’t that just a rumor? They say no visits are allowed, so how would anyone know?”
“No.”
“It’s f*cking confirmed.”
“You know Min-hyeong among our classmates, right? His girlfriend’s older sister works at the hospital, she saw him.”
“That’s exactly what a rumor is, you bastard.”
The two chattering guys tightly shut their mouths when the professor’s gaze turned their way.
Hee-woon fidgeted with his hands under the desk.
On the palm of Seo Kang-woo’s hand sitting next to him was a skin-toned band-aid.
It seemed he got a little hurt too when he smashed Hyeok-jin’s head with the glass.
Hee-woon stared intently at that well-shaped hand, unimaginable that it could do such a horrific thing.
“We will now begin the presentation.”
The only person who knows about Seo Kang-woo’s insane act is me.
Hee-woon turned his head and looked straight ahead.
His heart was beating fast.
                                                ****
Less than a week remained until the exams.
Normally, he would have taken a nap during his free periods, but he couldn’t afford to waste time.
He was always short on time during exam periods because of his six-days-a-week tutoring, and because Seo Kang-woo frequently called for him.
He had no choice but to do his insufficient studying after finishing his tutoring sessions.
Yesterday, he returned home at 2 AM, studied for about 4 hours, and then slept.
His sleep time was 2 hours.
The day before, 3 hours; the day before that, 2 hours.
Perhaps he had reached his limit; he was extremely tired.
It felt like if anything just touched his head, he would fall asleep.
Hee-woon wiped his face and looked at the clock.
About 3 hours remained until his tutoring session.
The subject he had to finish today… that is….
“Haah—.”
Hee-woon let out a sigh and covered his eyes.
He was walking, but his brain was definitely asleep.
Judging by the fact Seo Kang-woo still hadn’t contacted him, maybe he wouldn’t call today.
Then, maybe I should get a little sleep in the department office.
It would be a disaster if I dozed off during tutoring.
A few days ago, a student said to him, ‘I’ll be watching you, teacher.’
It would be better to get some sleep and then go to the tutoring session.
Having decided that, Hee-woon turned his steps away from the library.
Thinking he would get to sleep, his heavy, dragging steps became lighter.
But.
His phone rang.
[Seo Kang-woo]
Looking at the phone screen, Hee-woon roughly wiped his face.
It wasn’t fear upon seeing the three letters of Seo Kang-woo’s name, but irritation that surged.
It seems when fatigue piles up too much, even fear is lost.
He didn’t want to answer.
If he just went into the department office right now and put his head on the hard mattress, he could fall asleep immediately.
Even just an hour of sleep would relieve some fatigue.
But there was no option of not answering.
“…Hello.”
–Why are you answering the phone so late?
His usual tone was eerie.
“It’s….”
Hee-woon tried to make an excuse but trailed off.
Half his brain was still asleep.
–Come to the parking lot.
“Now?”
–Yes. Now.
The call ended.
Hee-woon stared blankly at his phone for a moment, then let out a sigh.
Pressing hard on his throbbing temples, he turned his steps.
He felt like crying.
What if I doze off during tutoring?
It would be a disaster if I get fired.
Will I be able to study and sleep later at dawn?
As he walked to the parking lot, Hee-woon’s face grew increasingly gloomy.
He saw Seo Kang-woo’s car.
The car he drove himself wasn’t a foreign car; perhaps it was because he didn’t want to attract attention.
Hee-woon took a deep breath and then got into Kang-woo’s car.
It didn’t even seem like he had properly closed the door when Kang-woo abruptly pulled Hee-woon by the nape and kissed him.
Hee-woon, eyes wide, roughly pushed Kang-woo’s shoulder away.
“What are you doing!”
Hee-woon checked that the car door was closed and glanced outside.
“I’m kissing you.”
Kang-woo answered nonchalantly and tilted his head.
He looked displeased.
“I-it was so sudden….”
“Our sunbae seems to not be scared of me now.”
That couldn’t be.
He must have been a little crazy himself.
Pushing Seo Kang-woo away.
On top of that, he had raised his voice.
‘That’s not it…’ Hee-woon started to explain, lost in thought, when Kang-woo slowly stroked his head.
“I’m happy to see you, but if you push me away, I don’t feel good.”
“……”
“If I don’t feel good….”
Kang-woo drew out his words.
Hee-woon lowered his eyes.
The hand stroking his hair suddenly grabbed a fistful of his hair and pulled it back.
“Ugh….”
“It’ll be a loss for you, sunbae.”
“What do you think?”
Hee-woon gritted his teeth.
His scalp, being pulled back, felt like it would tear off.
Hee-woon grabbed Kang-woo’s hand holding his hair with both of his hands.
His gaze naturally went to Kang-woo’s other hand.
If that hand clenched into a fist and hit his face, it would make a terribly chilling sound.
Kang-woo, noticing Hee-woon was distracted, pulled his head back.
“Hmm? I asked what you think.”
“Aak! I-I was wrong.”
A cold face came into view.
His sleep-deprived mind felt half-submerged in water.
It was unfair.
Seo Kang-woo, the sarcastic 16-year-old student at every opportunity, the loan sharks, his mom, his brother.
It seemed like everyone in his life was at ease, and only he was suffering like this.
His own life was harsh only to him.
“Why are you crying?”
Hee-woon belatedly realized he was crying.
Clear tears streamed endlessly down his pale cheeks.
In an instant, his wet lashes drooped limply.
The strong hand pulling his hair let go.
His scalp throbbed painfully.
“Why are you crying over nothing?”
It’s not nothing.
Actions that Seo Kang-woo calls ‘nothing’ were a great threat and terror to Hee-woon.
Anger surged abruptly.
But the fact that he had to swallow this too was pitiful.
“Huuuh….”
Hee-woon, who had let out a sob, rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand.
“Did I hit you?”
Hee-woon roughly wiped away the tears that kept flowing.
“Huh? Tell me.”
“Did I hit you?”
Kang-woo asked, tapping Hee-woon’s wet cheek with his finger.
He looked incredulous seeing Hee-woon suddenly burst into tears.
Hee-woon, who had been letting out occasional sobs, choked out words.
“My head… huuk… you pulled it… hic… hurt.”
“…….”
Kang-woo stared silently at Hee-woon.
The thoroughly wet face was twisted pitifully.
Watching Hee-woon fumblingly touch the back of his head, Kang-woo let out a low laugh.
He tilted his head, looked at Hee-woon’s face, and spoke.
“So.”
“You’re crying because it hurt when I grabbed your hair?”
“Hup… hic, no….”
“No? Yes, it is.”
He reached his hand towards Hee-woon’s head.
Hee-woon squeezed his eyes shut and made a shwi sound.
Long fingers parted his hair and slowly stroked his scalp.
“Stop.”
“Uh-huh….”
“I said, stop.”
His tone became firm, and Hee-woon opened the eyes he had closed.
The eyes of Seo Kang-woo, whom he thought would have an annoyed expression, were unexpectedly curved faintly.
Hee-woon blinked a few times.
The pooled tears fell again with a splash.
Kang-woo, smiling yet frowning, wiped away the tears.
“Just go to sleep.”
Kang-woo gently pushed his forehead, making him lean back against the seat.
Hee-woon’s restless movements quickly stopped when Kang-woo clicked his tongue.
“Close your eyes.”
Hee-woon closed his eyes.
When the lingering tears flowed down his cheek again, Kang-woo clicked his tongue and softly wiped them away.
His flat chest heaved with the aftereffects of crying.
“You’ll be in trouble if you open your eyes.”
“Uh-huh.”
Seeing the slight tensing of his eyelids, Kang-woo messed up Hee-woon’s hair.
Hee-woon felt the hand messing his hair move away.
The car started.
Where are we going?
Left, right.
Probably leaving the parking lot.
And…….
Hee-woon fell into a deep sleep just like that.
He thought he would sleep as soon as his head touched something, but he didn’t know he could do so even next to Seo Kang-woo.
“Wake up.”
The hand shaking his shoulder was so strong his whole body shook, and Hee-woon opened his eyes with a groan.
Peering drowsily out the window, he realized it was Seo Kang-woo’s house.
Startled, his eyes widened, and a yawn burst out.
Kang-woo put his finger into Hee-woon’s open mouth and chuckled.
“Get out.”
Hee-woon opened the passenger door, got out, and staggered slightly.
Seo Kang-woo, looking at him as if he was pathetic, strode over, grabbed his arm, and led him into the house.
A voice came from the kitchen Kang-woo entered.
Hee-woon looked back, then naturally went up to Kang-woo’s room on the second floor.
Seo Kang-woo’s room was still spacious, clean, and just a little familiar.
Hee-woon glanced at the half-open bedroom door and then flopped face down on the bed with its white sheets.
Falling asleep was instantaneous.
