Having replied to Bai Xia’s message and finished breakfast, tidying away the dishes, Mo Bai was finally ready to embrace his weekend. However, since he wasn’t returning home, he still needed to call his family beforehand to inform them, lest his parents worry needlessly. As the only son of the Mo family, his parents doted on him immensely. If he failed to return home for the weekend without so much as a word, he knew his mother would likely nag him for half the day. More importantly, however, he wished to call his father to recount the events of the previous night. It wasn’t that he particularly cared for the girl; rather, the image of her kneeling helplessly in his arms in the dead of night was something he simply couldn’t shake. Moreover… given that she was a healing-type transcendent, the matter certainly warranted his attention.
Opening his phone’s contact list, Mo Bai found “Father” listed there. His finger hovered over the screen for a moment before he finally dialed his father’s number.
“What is it, son? Why aren’t you coming home this weekend?”
The call connected, and a steady voice, tinged with a hint of concern, quickly responded. In the background, the faint rustle of papers being turned suggested his father was clearly at work.
“Dad, there’s something I need to discuss with you.”
Holding his phone, Mo Bai slowly walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing at the distant morning cityscape of the Imperial Capital. Involuntarily, his mind began to replay the events of last night.
“Last night, I encountered a suspected healing-type transcendent… she seemed to be underage, but…”
He meticulously described the situation with the white-haired girl from the previous night, including her peculiar reaction to blood and her saliva’s astonishing ability to heal wounds. Yet, as his words faded, a brief silence settled on the other end of the line, as if the matter held little importance to his father.
“Hmm, I understand.”
Mo Bai heard his father close a file on the other end, leaving him somewhat perplexed as to his father’s intentions. “However, Mo Bai, the Imperial Capital hasn’t been peaceful lately; I’m sure you’re aware of that.”
With that understated remark, Mo Bai immediately grasped the underlying message: his father was advising him not to meddle in such affairs.
“But Dad…”
Mo Bai attempted to argue further.
“But you’ve grown up. You are, after all, a young master of the Mo family. Your talent is exceptional, and sooner or later, you’ll reach the position I hold. Go ahead and do whatever you wish, but…”
His father’s voice paused, and the rustling of papers resumed before ceasing once more. “Similarly, you must learn to take responsibility for your actions.”
“I understand.”
As the call ended, Mo Bai remained by the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing at the morning light over the Imperial Capital. His slender fingers gently traced the edge of his phone, his brow subtly furrowed.
Perhaps, this was his father’s way of testing him?
Meanwhile, that same morning, at the headquarters of the Imperial Capital’s Blade Keepers Agency.
“New case! Hurry up, drop whatever you’re doing—we’re having a meeting!”
As the command rang out, the conference room erupted into a flurry of activity. The rustle of files mingled with the hurried footsteps of nearly all the transcendents responsible for the Imperial Capital’s security as they swiftly converged in the meeting room. The reason was simple: early that morning, a bar owner had reported an unauthorized use of transcendent abilities in their establishment the previous night. Not only had it resulted in injuries, but it had also caused significant financial and property damage to the bar, alarming the high-ranking officials of the Blade Keepers Agency.
Inside the conference room, a holographic projection displayed footage captured by the bar’s surveillance cameras: a white-haired girl, in a flash, unleashed her transcendent abilities, kicking open the door to a private room. In the same instant, she sent a guest—along with the door—flying into the bar counter some distance away before making her escape. Many of the transcendents watched the surveillance footage, their faces etched with considerable surprise. After all, if the girl weren’t a transcendent, it would be truly difficult to imagine a petite young woman unleashing such astonishing power. A solid wooden door, weighing dozens of kilograms, had been kicked clean off its hinges, sending it and the adult male behind it crashing through the bar counter some ten meters away. The white-haired girl’s frantically fleeing figure stood in stark contrast to this terrifying destructive force.
However, the bar owner who reported the incident only provided surveillance footage from the main hall; the footage from inside the private room was mysteriously missing. According to the owner’s explanation, the transcendent’s abilities had interfered with the monitoring equipment, causing the private room’s cameras to malfunction. While the video provided by the owner clearly downplayed certain aspects, given that an incident involving a transcendent causing injury had occurred, they were obligated to investigate the matter thoroughly and without delay. After all, the Blade Keepers Agency was responsible not only for protecting human society from invasions by creatures from beyond the veil but also for mediating conflicts between ordinary citizens and transcendents. Consequently, crimes committed by transcendents were always met with severe penalties, aimed at preventing certain individuals from abusing their abilities for illicit gains. Of course, the ultimate goal of these measures was not to suppress transcendents or merely to maintain balance between the two groups. These laws existed to prevent the emergence of even more terrifying entities. However, such information typically comprised top-secret files, utterly inaccessible to ordinary transcendents like themselves.
“First, check if this girl is registered with the Blade Keepers Agency. If not, that’s an aggravated offense. Meanwhile, another team should review surveillance footage to determine her final destination.”
Chu Feng, the captain in charge of the case, tapped the table and issued his orders with a solemn expression. The Blade Keepers Agency maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards transcendents who abused their abilities, even if the perpetrator was as seemingly innocent as this young girl. Furthermore, the organization’s surveillance and management of the Imperial Capital were exceptionally stringent; it was merely a matter of time until the girl was apprehended, so long as she remained within the city.
Of course… he was not entirely without personal motives in this matter.
Chu Feng’s fingertips swept across the holographic projection, freezing the image of the white-haired girl’s frantic escape. As he slowly zoomed in, his eyes subtly darkened. Decades ago, his parents had perished in a terrorist attack orchestrated by transcendents. Had he not been a mere child then, spared by that group of transcendents, he too would likely have met his end. From that day forward, he had vowed to join the Blade Keepers Agency, swearing to bring every law-breaking transcendent to justice. While such an ambition might sound like a child’s naive vow, Chu Feng had indeed spent twenty years turning it into reality. Now, still young, his strength had already entered the Fourth Tier, and he was on the verge of being promoted to squad leader within the Blade Keepers Agency. Thus, this operation held immense importance for him. Success was the only option; failure was not an alternative!
Yet, one detail puzzled him: why had the girl chosen to use her transcendent abilities only after entering the private room? According to the bar owner, the girl had been working at the bar all along, and everything had been fine until she suddenly used her abilities to injure someone today. A moment’s careful thought revealed that something was undeniably amiss. Moreover, and most crucially, judging by her physique and appearance, the girl hardly seemed like an adult…
Could it be that the bar was secretly involved in illicit activities? The more he pondered, the sharper Chu Feng’s gaze became, his fingers unconsciously tapping the tabletop. While the girl’s unauthorized use of transcendent abilities was absolutely unacceptable—even in self-defense, she would bear some responsibility—it seemed the bar owner was no paragon of virtue either.
“Boss, boss, the surveillance footage has been found!”
Just as Chu Feng was deep in thought, a young team member rushed in, pushing the door open, a tablet in his hand displaying the downloaded surveillance video. Chu Feng immediately took the tablet, his fingers swiftly swiping to zoom in on the footage. The video clearly recorded the entire sequence: from the girl running out of the bar, to a young man carrying her into a car, their final destination, and then her departure the following morning.
“So, have you found out where she ultimately went?”
Chu Feng’s gaze remained fixed on the surveillance footage, watching the girl enter an urban village before finally lowering the tablet.
“We found it, Boss.”
A subordinate brought up a map of the Imperial Capital. “Based on the travel trajectory, the girl was dropped off in Xicheng First Village, an old urban village in that area.”
An urban village?
Chu Feng’s brow furrowed slightly. Xicheng First Village was an area with a complex populace and low surveillance coverage, indeed making it a good place to hide. But who were they? They were the Blade Keepers Agency! If they couldn’t even apprehend one person, how could they maintain order and protect the security of the Imperial Capital?
“Alright, let’s move out.”
Chu Feng stood up, his black trench coat sweeping out in a sharp arc with his movement. Today, they were absolutely determined to bring this girl to justice!
