Chen Sishi, Lin Yiting, and Chen Lujun wore varied expressions, yet none of them intended to interrupt Lin Yi. After all, his singing was quite pleasant, so they decided to let him continue, saving them the trouble of playing music in the car.
His voice, carried by an unknown melody, sometimes lingered with a rich, meandering quality, at other times stirring the dust from the rafters. Though soft, it possessed a unique charm.
Lin Yi had never received professional training. Whenever boredom struck in the past, he would often sing to entertain himself. While his initial performances were unremarkable, over time, he had subtly grasped some of the nuances of vocal technique.
Nevertheless, relying on this accumulated experience, his rendition of the song was naturally far superior to that of an average person.
As the song drew to a close, Lin Yi’s voice abruptly ceased. He lifted his gaze to the window, where the gloomy sky seemed to mirror the somber world depicted in the melody. The retreating scenery outside flowed past, rising and falling like a musical phrase.
Still lost in the lingering echoes of the song, Chen Sishi snapped back to reality, looking up at Lin Yi with expectant eyes. The melody had transported her to a dreamlike realm, filled with an array of beautiful things.
She had been utterly absorbed, but the moment Lin Yi’s voice faded, all the vivid imagery seemed to shatter.
Unable to recall the enchanting scene she had just witnessed, Chen Sishi fixed her gaze on Lin Yi, silently hoping he would sing another.
Seeing this, Lin Yiting quickly extended her delicate hand and sharply poked Lin Yi in the waist. She knew she couldn’t let this continue; Lin Yi had already told her about Chen Sishi’s tenacious personality.
If Chen Sishi became captivated by his singing, she would surely pester him to perform every single day.
Wincing from the sudden jab, Lin Yi looked at Lin Yiting with a puzzled expression. He had been about to begin his next song when his sister abruptly interrupted him. He instinctively wanted to ask what was wrong, but before he could speak, Lin Yiting leaned in and whispered to him.
“You sang well. Sing another.”
“Huh?”
Lin Yiting’s words startled Lin Yi. He had deliberately kept his voice low, precisely to avoid being overheard.
A blush crept onto his cheeks as Lin Yi turned to glance at the other occupants of the car, curious about their reactions.
Chen Lujun’s expression remained unchanged, offering Lin Yi no discernible clues.
Chen Sishi’s cheeks, however, were flushed, and her clear, blue eyes were fixed intently on Lin Yi, conveying an almost desperate yearning. Her gaze sent a shiver down Lin Yi’s spine, making him feel as though he had been targeted by a predator.
Awkwardly, Lin Yi shut his mouth, hoping to feign ignorance. But Lin Yiting had no intention of letting him off the hook; she was clearly enjoying the spectacle.
With another playful poke to his waist, Lin Yiting whispered in his ear once more.
“Little Yi, hurry up. Someone else wants to hear you sing.”
This was too much for Lin Yi. He shot Lin Yiting a glare before turning his gaze sharply towards the window.
In response, Lin Yiting merely shrugged, a gesture that seemed to convey to Chen Sishi that Lin Yi simply didn’t want to sing, and it had nothing to do with her.
Chen Sishi clenched her small fists, gritting her teeth. She was convinced that if Lin Yiting hadn’t intervened, Lin Yi would have continued singing. It was obvious Lin Yiting didn’t want him to perform anymore.
The light in the young girl’s eyes slowly dimmed. Although she felt immense frustration, there was nothing she could do to Lin Yiting.
For one, Lin Yiting was clearly skilled in combat; Chen Sishi had realized this during their previous encounter.
Secondly, Lin Yiting knew her father, and the consequences of harming her would be unimaginable if her father found out.
Sensing the murderous intent from the girl beside her, Lin Yiting narrowed her eyes and scoffed disdainfully. She wasn’t easily intimidated by Chen Sishi; when it came to killing, she was far more proficient.

As an unfamiliar melody played in his headphones once more, Lin Yi had learned his lesson. He kept his mouth tightly shut, using only his breath to simulate the act of singing. Though no sound emerged, the fluctuating rhythm of his breathing managed to mimic the song’s tune.
Gazing at the increasingly gloomy sky outside, Lin Yi narrowed his amber eyes. Strong winds outside the car window whipped up a flurry of dust, sending weeds and leaves dancing erratically.
Merely observing such weather could dampen one’s spirits. Yet, Lin Yi held no dislike for the harsh conditions; on the contrary, he rather enjoyed them.
Just then, a cargo truck laden with goods rumbled past his window. A little bored, Lin Yi watched it gradually disappear into the distance. Just as he was about to avert his gaze, a cloud of dust suddenly erupted from the side of the truck.
A pale yellow gas, like a released flood, rapidly obscured the road ahead. A massive explosion shook the car windows, causing them to tremble. The truck, which had been driving steadily moments before, instantly lurching sideways.
With a deafening crash, the truck overturned, its white cargo container slamming heavily onto the ground. The black sedan in front was crushed and distorted by the impact. Shards of steel, propelled by inertia, flew in all directions, narrowly missing nearby vehicles.
These events unfolded in a mere instant, and everyone inside the car had only just registered what had happened.
The driver, who had been fully focused, violently wrenched the steering wheel. His foot rapidly pressed and released the brake pedal.
Everyone in the car held their breath, watching as they sped towards the overturned truck. With a grim expression, the driver slammed on the brakes, executing a stylish drift.
The car finally skidded to a halt a meter in front of the truck, and everyone exhaled in relief. It was fortunate that the driver Chen Lujun had hired was reliable, or they all would have met their end there.
Staring at the blood seeping from the vehicle, Lin Yi’s amber eyes trembled uncontrollably. He had witnessed the entire accident unfold; the crushed car in front was the very one Chen Lujun had been riding in just moments ago.
This was the very car accident from the original plot. It was difficult to imagine Chen Sishi’s feelings upon witnessing this scene back then. If Lin Yi had seen his own family members mangled in such a way, he truly would have gone mad.
More and more vehicles began to clog the road. Even the usually composed Chen Lujun frowned, realizing the flattened car contained all of his personal bodyguards.
These men were close to him, pillars of strength within his company.
As he watched the steady stream of blood pouring from the vehicle, a surge of fury welled up within him.
“Sishi, you all stay in the car. I’m going to check the situation.”
Without another word, Chen Lujun pushed open the car door and swiftly ran to the side of the truck, desperate to ascertain if anyone inside was still alive.
In the distance, inside an inconspicuous grey minivan, several middle-aged men, armed with various firearms and dressed in different attire, stared intently at Chen Lujun as he exited his car.
Their expressions were grim. According to their plan, Chen Lujun should have died in the crash.
Yet, Chen Lujun stood there, completely unharmed. This outcome indicated either a traitor among them or that Chen Lujun had been prepared.
Considering these possibilities, the man in the driver’s seat slammed his hand onto the steering wheel in a fit of rage. His already menacing face contorted into an even more ferocious grimace under the flush of anger.
