Aftershocks and Silent Thunder

Chapter 101,021 words9 min read

“Too weak.”

These three words, like the most silent of curses, continued to hover and echo above the empty training grounds long after I had spoken them.

Time itself seemed to have been ensnared by a slowing spell in that instant.

I could distinctly see the expressions on the faces of the surrounding noble scions—a mixture of shock, fear, and disbelief. It was as if they had just witnessed a sheep open its mouth and swallow a dragon whole.

Prince Alexis, standing at the front of the formation, lost his gentle smile for the first time. It was replaced by an unprecedented gravity and scrutiny.

Beside him, Sir Kaiden Eisenhart’s hand, which habitually rested on his sword hilt, was now clenched tightly, his knuckles turning white from the immense pressure.

His gaze was filled with intense vigilance, as if I were not a classmate, but an exceptionally dangerous foe.

I could even perceive Instructor Barton, standing at the edge of the training grounds. His usually stern face was now etched with undisguised horror.

His sharp eyes, those of a seasoned veteran, were fixed unblinkingly on the spot where I had stood moments before, as if seeking traces left by that uncanny black shield.

And at the focal point of all these gazes, Ella, the protagonist who had faced the abyss, remained frozen in place, like an exquisite doll from which the soul had been forcibly extracted.

Her emerald eyes had lost their focus, and her lips trembled slightly, yet no sound escaped them.

In that fleeting instant, what she had experienced was not merely the visual shock of her light projectile being devoured.

It was the profound shiver and sense of insignificance that arose from the depths of her soul when her light touched that pure darkness, like prey caught in the gaze of its natural predator.

That was a suppressive force born of elemental counteraction, utterly irresistible.

‘Damn, it seems… I might have overdone it.’

A frantic alarm bell was ringing within my mind.

My original intention was simply to defend against the attack, allowing myself to pass through unnoticed.

However, I had completely underestimated how… absolute… the sea of magic’s execution of the ‘guard’ command would be.

It didn’t parry, nor did it reflect.

It chose the most tyrannical and unreasonable method…

[Annihilation].

This had far surpassed the realm of genius.

This was the domain of a demon lord.

The icy facade I had so painstakingly constructed now seemed to show a faint crack.

For while an iceberg was cold, it remained within the bounds of logic.

Yet what had just transpired was an anomaly that defied all reason.

“…Alright! Today’s training ends here! Everyone, dismissed!”

Instructor Barton’s booming voice finally shattered the suffocating silence.

A subtle hoarseness was detectable in his tone.

He offered no commentary on what had just occurred. Instead, he simply cast an incredibly complex gaze upon me before declaring the session over.

This deliberate evasion felt more like a silent clap of thunder, proving the immense impact that single moment had on him.

As if granted a reprieve, the students quickly dispersed, eager to leave this unsettling place.

As they passed me, they instinctively veered around in a subtle arc, their eyes holding not just awe, but an added touch of fear.

Sophia’s former cronies, in particular, didn’t even dare to glance my way, practically scurrying off with their tails between their legs.

In the blink of an eye, only Ella and I remained on the vast training grounds.

“Eckhart… Miss…”

Ella finally found her voice, though it was still dry and hoarse.

She looked at me, her beautiful green eyes, for the first time, devoid of curiosity or any intent of closeness. All that remained was a complex mix of bewilderment and fear.

She was like a lost lamb, suddenly discovering that what she had been trying to approach was not another sheep, but a dormant dragon in sheep’s clothing.

“…”

I offered no reply.

For I had no idea what to say.

Any explanation would seem pale and powerless in the face of the incredible strength I had just displayed.

I simply turned silently and walked towards the changing rooms.

My steps remained steady, my back straight.

Yet beneath that cold facade, my heart hammered violently with lingering fear and unease.

I did not notice that after I turned to leave, the fear in Ella’s bewildered eyes was slowly receding.

In its place, a more intense, almost obsessive confusion began to bloom.

‘Why?’

‘Why would someone with such terrifying power gently help me and my books in the hallway?’

‘Why would such a person choose to be paired with someone as isolated as myself?’

‘Why… when I attacked her with that insignificant light projectile, did she use a shield that seemed capable of devouring even the world itself to protect me?’

‘Violence, arrogance, cruelty…’ These labels, rumored to belong to Lilliana, began to shake violently in Ella’s mind for the first time.

To her, that previous scene was less a defense and more a… supremely domineering, unquestionable form of protection.

An absolute declaration: ‘Your attack isn’t even worthy of harming me.’

‘Could she be…?’

Meanwhile, back in the boys’ changing room, Prince Alexis was wiping sweat from his brow as he spoke in a low voice to Kaiden beside him.

“Kaiden, what do you make of it?”

Kaiden Eisenhart was silent for a moment, cold light glinting in his dark eyes.

“That was no shield,” he stated, each word deliberate. “It was more like the nascent form of a ‘domain.’ A domain that… reduces everything to nothingness.”

Alexis’s movements froze.

“Are you saying…”

“Your Highness,” Kaiden turned, looking at him with utmost seriousness.

“Lilliana von Eckhart’s level of danger, perhaps, needs to be re-evaluated. She… is no longer a pawn we can easily control.”

A silent clap of thunder tore an unfathomable rift in the hearts of all who had witnessed it.

As for me, the eye of the storm, I remained utterly oblivious.
