Yun Yao smiled, noncommittal.
“It was always going to hurt,” Yun Yao explained. “The pain of bone fusion and bone stripping are quite similar. If I had warned you, you would have been afraid. Just bear with it; it will be over soon.”
Bai Lan’s face was already contorted, his lips twitching violently. He had never imagined he would have to endure such agony a second time. The first time, of course, Xue Yue had borne it himself.
Yet, Xue Yue’s memories were now his, vivid and sharp. This time, however, he was willing to endure the pain, for if the Divine Bone successfully integrated, he would possess a cultivation physique far more potent than before.
The excruciating pain persisted for nearly five minutes before finally beginning to subside. Bai Lan’s tormented expression gradually faded, replaced by a serene calm, though the copious cold sweat coating his body made him appear utterly weak.
This weakness, however, was merely superficial. In truth, as the Divine Bone fused, Bai Lan felt his previous enfeeblement vanish entirely. A warm current surged from the Divine Bone in his chest, spreading throughout his entire body, suddenly filling him with an overwhelming sense of power, as if he had consumed a potent elixir.
Seeing the Divine Bone fully integrated into Bai Lan’s body, Yun Yao offered a faint smile before stepping back a few paces, allowing him time to fully recover. Bai Lan remained frozen in place for about a minute before his eyes finally fluttered open. With an excited expression, he raised his hands, clenched his fists, and stretched his body, his face alight with sheer joy.
It seems this suffering was not in vain, Bai Lan mused inwardly. The after-effects of the Divine Bone’s removal, along with the spiritual exhaustion from my previous life’s prolonged work that damaged my body, have all vanished.
“It looks like you’re almost done,” Yun Yao said. “However, this Divine Bone of yours hasn’t fully awakened yet; it needs time. Once it revives, you’ll gain the special abilities of a Chaos Body.”
“Oh, and a quick heads-up, someone’s here. I’ll return to your body now; you can handle things from here.” With that, Yun Yao transformed into a streak of light and entered Bai Lan’s body.
Bai Lan felt a sudden surge of panic. He had no idea what attitude the people of this sect held towards him. If they were benevolent, all would be well, but if they harbored ulterior motives, he would be in deep trouble. He currently possessed no power, merely an ordinary person, and a newcomer at that. Although he had Xue Yue’s memories, his personality was vastly different from Xue Yue’s.
Approximately moments later, the heavy door of the cold chamber slowly creaked open. Bai Lan watched the entrance with extreme vigilance, but then, he froze. Stepping through the doorway was a woman of unparalleled beauty.
This stunning woman, in turn, gazed at him with an equally surprised expression.
“So beautiful?” Bai Lan muttered to himself, staring at her. “My heavens, how can there be such a gorgeous woman in this world? She must be a fairy, right? Well, it’s a cultivation world, so calling her a fairy isn’t wrong. But why do I feel such a familiar sense of closeness to her?”
The newcomer was, of course, Bai Yiren. She had found some free time and intended to check on Bai Lan, but she hadn’t expected him to have awakened. The two stared at each other, eyes wide, creating an awkward silence. Ultimately, it was Bai Lan who reacted first.
“Uh? This, beautiful lady, hello there,” Bai Lan said, using the tone he might have used to greet girls in his previous life. “Did you, uh, save me?”
To the women of this world, his tone sounded entirely like that of a frivolous fop, causing Bai Yiren to frown slightly. She then strolled leisurely into the room.
For some inexplicable reason, Bai Lan sensed a powerful aura emanating from the woman before him. With every step she took, he involuntarily retreated, until he had nowhere left to go and plopped down onto the bed. She now stood directly in front of him, the two separated by less than a meter.
Bai Yiren scrutinized Bai Lan intently, then pursed her sensual red lips before speaking slowly.
“I’m quite surprised, little one,” she murmured. “You’ve actually awakened.”
Bai Yiren’s voice, as it reached Bai Lan’s ears, was nothing short of a blissful indulgence. It instinctively stirred wild fantasies within him, though he couldn’t be blamed. After all, in his previous life, he had been a twenty-something virgin, and the beauty before him captivated every aspect of his aesthetic sense.
“Uh? I, this, beautiful lady, you haven’t answered me yet,” Bai Lan asked, his face slightly flushed. “Is it you who saved me?” It was a reaction of shyness, for Bai Yiren was standing too close, a fragrance mingled with a cool aura wafting over him.
“Yes, that’s right,” Bai Yiren replied, lifting a hand to brush a strand of hair from her face. “However, little one, I truly dislike you calling me ‘beautiful lady.’ In terms of age, I could probably be your great-grandmother, and then some.”
Upon hearing this, Bai Lan naturally understood her meaning. She was telling him not to be fooled by her youthful appearance, as her actual age was considerably greater. This was, of course, quite normal; even the most basic Qi Refining cultivators in the cultivation world could live for two hundred years. As for the woman before him, she was a Nascent Soul realm cultivator, with a base lifespan of two thousand years.
Wait? Why can I see through her cultivation? Bai Lan suddenly paused, perplexed. Nascent Soul late stage?
In his eyes, he could directly perceive the Nascent Soul within Bai Yiren’s body. A Nascent Soul was a characteristic of cultivators above the Nascent Soul realm. Bai Yiren’s Nascent Soul appeared as a white, jade-like ceramic doll, a clear indication that she primarily cultivated ice-attributed techniques. Furthermore, three golden patterns adorned her Nascent Soul, signifying that she was in the late stage of the Nascent Soul realm.
Don’t be too surprised, Yun Yao’s voice echoed in Bai Lan’s mind. This is one of the abilities I granted you. You can ignore anyone’s cultivation aura concealment and see through their cultivation level. This way, if you encounter danger, you can immediately determine whether to fight or flee.
With her explanation, Bai Lan understood.
“Oh, I see,” Bai Lan said, offering an awkward smile. “But then, how should I address you?”
Bai Yiren’s gaze, however, was peculiar at this moment. She had distinctly noticed something strange in Bai Lan’s eyes—a look unlike that of a child, carrying an almost discerning quality, as if he could see right through her.
Still, she didn’t dwell on it, dismissing it as a mere illusion.
“My name is Bai Yiren,” she stated after a moment of thought. “The place you are in is the Luoshen Sect of the Eastern Sea Region. I am the Mistress of the Luoshen Sect’s Fallen Immortal Pavilion, and also a Grand Elder of the Luoshen Sect.”
“As for you, I found you on a deserted island three years ago. And for what to call me? There’s a rather suitable title right now: you may address me as Master.”
Bai Lan was startled. He wasn’t foolish; it seemed Bai Yiren intended to take him as her disciple. But what was the catch? His first thought was whether she sought something from him.
“What? Are you unwilling?” Bai Yiren’s eyes narrowed slightly, adopting a displeased expression.
“Ah? No, no, not at all!” Bai Lan quickly responded, his eyes darting. “To have such a beautiful immortal as my Master, I, I am certainly willing! It’s just that what you said was so sudden, and I’m a bit bewildered right now because I can’t recall any memories from before I fell unconscious.” He quickly devised an excuse.
Hearing this, Bai Yiren’s displeased expression gradually faded.
“When I rescued you, your divine soul was injured, which undoubtedly affected your memory,” Bai Yiren continued. “However, you are currently in great danger; someone is definitely pursuing you. The Luoshen Sect is the safest place for you right now. Becoming my disciple will bring you no harm.”
