The Weight of Destiny and a Midnight Knock

Chapter 86757 words7 min read

Having gained some insight into her own destiny, Bai Wanwan couldn’t help but feel a shiver run down her spine.

The three hundred million debt she carried wasn’t entirely a detriment. The precise amount to be owed, and subsequently repaid, profoundly influenced Bai Wanwan’s destiny.

However, this delicate balance proved incredibly difficult to maintain.

Bai Wanwan had little expertise in this area, possessing only a superficial understanding. How she wished her grandfather were by her side right now; he would undoubtedly resolve this issue with effortless grace.

‘Still, my skills are far from perfected,’ Bai Wanwan sighed silently in her heart.

“My head hurts so much…”

Just as Bai Wanwan’s thoughts wandered, Liu Hanzhi, who had been lying unconscious in the living room, finally stirred awake.

She slowly pried open her eyes, then shakily pushed herself up from the sofa.

“Wanwan, were we just assaulted by some sinister force? Are you alright?”

Awakening from the lingering shock of the Yin-Yang Quake, Liu Hanzhi’s immediate concern wasn’t for herself, but for Bai Wanwan.

In her estimation, if even a minor female ghost like herself had been disoriented by that sharp crack, then Bai Wanwan, with her more fragile physical state, must surely be in a far worse predicament.

“I’m fine.”

Observing Liu Hanzhi’s unsteady gait, Bai Wanwan momentarily regretted using her as a test subject.

She then recounted to Liu Hanzhi the entire incident of the Yin-Yang Quake, explaining how both her Yin and Yang energies were exceptionally potent.

Liu Hanzhi nodded gravely, concurring with Bai Wanwan’s assessment that an overabundance of both Yin and Yang energies could indeed lead to an untimely demise.

Such a destiny was, undeniably, far too immense for any mortal to withstand.

“However, you needn’t fret,” Liu Hanzhi reassured her, “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. How much more dangerous can a spirit realm truly be?”

As she spoke, Liu Hanzhi subtly gestured towards the small nurse figure nearby.

“With me by your side, I won’t let anything befall you.”

Liu Hanzhi checked the time, then her gaze fell upon the paper-crafted phone on the table. She gently massaged her still-groggy head.

“Given the hour, I believe live streaming should still be our top priority.”

Hearing Liu Hanzhi’s words, Bai Wanwan suddenly reconsidered the urgency of earning money through live streaming.

What if she managed to repay the three hundred million debt, only to perish instantly because her destiny proved too overwhelming?

Bai Wanwan voiced her concerns to Shi Xiangning and Liu Hanzhi. The two little female ghosts exchanged glances, then vigorously shook their heads in unison.

“While that’s true, none of us can say for certain whether it’s better to clear this debt or to remain indebted.”

“Furthermore, debt itself is a form of karma. A sum of this magnitude would inevitably impact countless individuals, which, in essence, equates to accumulating negative karma.”

“Even the celestial deities in heaven strive for popular consensus. If you were to affect too many people and deplete too much of your accumulated virtue, the repercussions could prove far more perilous than your destiny itself.”

Liu Hanzhi shook her head, and for once, Shi Xiangning found herself in rare agreement with her.

“Therefore, our inclination is to continue live streaming and repaying the debt to observe the situation. Owing too much might lead to death, yet having no debt at all could also be fatal. Navigating this path to maximize benefits and minimize harm is incredibly challenging.”

Shi Xiangning sighed, her gaze fixed on Bai Wanwan. She recalled the formidable presence Bai Wanwan had commanded within her own spirit realm.

While she was undoubtedly powerful, there were also numerous aspects of her situation that evoked a sense of profound helplessness.

Knock, knock, knock.

Just as the lone human and two ghosts were sighing within the room, a sudden knock echoed from Bai Wanwan’s door.

The sound startled them. Darkness had long since fallen, and it was already ten o’clock at night. Who could possibly be knocking at this hour?

“Wanwan, did you order takeout?”

Liu Hanzhi inquired with a hint of curiosity.

“N-no, I didn’t.”

What a ridiculous notion! While Bai Wanwan possessed a modest sum, she couldn’t afford to squander it. She even bought instant noodles that were nearing their expiration date. How could she possibly afford takeout late at night? Was the delivery fee free?

“Why do I sense an incredibly potent surge of Yin energy from outside?”

Shi Xiangning instinctively furrowed her brow.

Something was amiss!

This felt profoundly wrong!
