Xi Xue’s hand was like soft jade, delicate and tender, touching her heart with an indescribable comfort.
‘Was this what a girl’s hand felt like?’ Lan Ruobing’s face grew faintly warm.
Suddenly, a cool touch graced the back of her hand.
Looking down, she saw Xi Xue’s thumb tracing circles across it.
“What are you thinking about? You’re not even looking where you’re going,” Xi Xue chided, giving Ruobing a flick on the forehead.
“Ow!” Lan Ruobing clutched her forehead, gazing reproachfully at Xi Xue. “Wasn’t I following you?”
“Oh, I thought you had something on your mind, hahaha,” Xi Xue chuckled.
“…” Lan Ruobing merely stared at her, still reproachful, but said nothing.
The flick hadn’t actually hurt; it was quite light.
Yet, she couldn’t shake the feeling of being underestimated.
In contrast, Xi Xue was delighted.
‘So this is what it feels like to flick someone’s forehead?’ she mused. ‘It’s quite nice. No wonder couples on TV love doing it.’
The sky was clear and vast, with a gentle breeze drifting by.
The enrollment site for the Ability University buzzed with activity, teeming with people.
Rows of recruitment tables channeled the flow of students, while behind them, dazzling and magnificent abilities blossomed everywhere, prompting cries of awe and applause from the onlookers.
Lan Ruobing followed Xi Xue to a teaching building.
With her excellent eyesight, she watched the vibrant abilities manifesting in the distance.
Volleys of fireballs struck rapidly moving targets, leaving behind splashes of charred marks and wisps of black smoke.
Individuals with lightning wings soared through the air, surrounded by crackling serpentine electricity.
Suddenly, a mighty thunderclap echoed as they unleashed a barrage of attacks upon the ground.
Others, gripping daggers in reverse, leaped like swimmers, plunging into the earth.
They transformed into dark shadows, gliding away to evade the intermittent water bombs raining from above, stealthily approaching their ‘enemies’ from behind.
All of them were undergoing the Ability University’s entrance examination.
“Why are we here?” Lan Ruobing asked.
“To prepare for your exam,” Xi Xue replied.
“???”
“Those who pass the Ability University exam can still take the Guardian University exam tomorrow. If you pass that, you go to Guardian University. If not, you stay at Ability University,” Xi Xue explained.
“I know that,” Lan Ruobing said.
“Aren’t you going to sign up?” Xi Xue asked.
“No,” Lan Ruobing stated without hesitation.
“Why not?”
“I don’t want to leave myself an escape route. Once there’s a backup plan, there’s a path for retreat, and I won’t give my all during the exam,” Lan Ruobing declared firmly.
“Burning your bridges, then?”
“Mhm, exactly.”
“I see,” Xi Xue nodded, thoughtful. “You need to be sure. If you don’t get in, you’ll have to wait another year.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t fail,” Lan Ruobing asserted, patting her chest.
She understood Xi Xue’s concern, but she possessed a Tier 5 ability.
A Tier 5 expert was practically guaranteed to dominate the examination hall.
Although she had registered her exposed strength as Tier 4, during a fight, she could simply feign a breakthrough.
The entire exam would be effortlessly handled.
“Alright, I understand,” Xi Xue conceded, seeing Ruobing’s unwavering resolve.
This was precisely the outcome she desired.
Even if Ruobing had genuinely considered a backup plan, Xi Xue would have found a way to persuade her to abandon it.
Only by pushing Ruobing into a corner, with no other path, could she become the only person Ruobing could rely on.
She couldn’t predict the future, but for now, this was her plan.
After all, she had a pair of terrifying fangs.
If Ruobing knew, she would surely leave her, wouldn’t she?
