The Scarred Man found himself unable to exert any strength!
No, it wasn’t that he couldn’t exert strength, but rather that no matter how hard he tried, the greatsword on his back remained utterly motionless, as if it had been fixed in the air.
“What evil magic did you use, you wench?!”
Seeing that he couldn’t draw his weapon, the Scarred Man turned around, enraged, and roared at the girl. It seemed to him that she must have used some wicked spell to paralyze his arm. Otherwise, how could the strength of a mere woman possibly surpass his own?
“I don’t use any evil magic. It just seems you can’t win against me in a contest of strength.” With her free hand, the girl shrugged, then innocently turned her head away.
“Impossible! How could I, a great Lord Purger, lose to you?! Absolutely impossible!”
Unable to accept his physical inferiority, the Scarred Man screamed at the girl at the top of his lungs. He looked utterly pathetic, like someone struggling to push out a stubborn stool.
“How unsightly. To think there’s someone like you among the Disaster Purgers. It truly breaks my heart.” Facing his wild outburst, the girl shook her head with a sorrowful expression. It was as if she felt ashamed that such a person existed among her ranks.
“Damn it! Damn it! Let me go!”
The instigator still showed not a shred of remorse, continuing to thrash about and attempting to break free from her iron grasp.
“Seris, stop playing around. Why not just throw out this trash?”
As the girl was sighing, a different, weathered, and hoarse voice emerged from the direction of the unfamiliar colleague Gawain and Aluk had noticed earlier. The owner of the voice seemed to think Seris was wasting far too much time.
“Seris? That woman is Seris?!”
Following the voice, Gawain and Aluk soon spotted a solemn middle-aged man dressed in a black leather jacket.
Upon hearing the middle-aged man call out her name, Gawain and Aluk’s faces clearly showed their astonishment. They had heard the name Seris before! After all, this name was extremely well-known among the Disaster Purgers. Anyone who heard the name Seris would immediately associate it with her title—Godspeed.
Seris, known as Godspeed, had become the most highly anticipated potential First-Class Disaster Purger at a young age. That was why she was widely known within the Light of Holy Flame.
“You… you are Godspeed?!”
Upon hearing the middle-aged man call her out, the Scarred Man was visibly terrified. Even though he was arrogant, when faced with someone who could eliminate him in seconds… he would still tuck his tail between his legs. After all, no one wanted to court their own demise.
“You recognize me?” Seris smiled enchantingly.
However, to the Scarred Man, her smile was like the grin of the Grim Reaper itself. It sent a violent shiver down his spine.
“Se… Lady Seris, I was wrong!” Feeling the chilling aura emanating from her, the Scarred Man’s legs instantly gave out. He collapsed onto the ground, pleading fearfully, hoping she would forgive his earlier disrespect.
“Ah, such people truly are everywhere,” Gawain sighed softly, looking deeply toward the restaurant’s entrance. It seemed the Scarred Man’s behavior had stirred some unpleasant memories in his mind.
“No choice. When an organization gets big, you’re bound to find all sorts of people,” Aluk spread his hands and shrugged, considering it a perfectly normal phenomenon. Some people, once they attained status, would never recall their miserable past of fawning and begging, nor would they sympathize with others. They only armed themselves as selfish individuals who thought solely of their own power.
“Right, Miss Waitress, I’ll have two orders of this.” After his reflections, Aluk did not forget about ordering his meal.
“Two full slime meals?”
“That’s right.”
“You have excellent taste, sir! The Slime Full Meal is our restaurant’s most distinctive dish!”
“Hmm, I’ll take it because I find it quite interesting.”
Was it due to a morbid curiosity? Or did he genuinely find it interesting? In any case, Aluk was set on ordering it.
“Slime Full Meal? That doesn’t sound like something you can eat!” Gawain protested. He naturally knew what a slime was: a type of low-level monster. A weak, easily defeated creature that even a healthy child could overcome with a stick. Recalling the sticky, gelatinous shape of a slime, Gawain found it hard to associate it with food.
“Don’t worry, sir! Our Slime Full Meal is perfectly safe to eat, and it’s incredibly delicious! It’s a unique dish exclusive to our Sacrificial Lamb restaurant!” Accustomed to such reactions, the maid patiently explained the dish to him.
“Is that so? Then I’ll trust Aluk’s judgment for once.” Gawain stroked his chin and pondered for a moment. Presumably, he found nothing amiss, so he nodded his head in agreement.
“Then we’ll leave it to you.” Seeing that Gawain had no objections, Aluk handed the menu back to the waitress.
“Understood. Please wait a moment, gentlemen.” The waitress politely bowed to the two, then turned and left.
“By the way, Gawain, what are your plans next?” Aluk rested his chin in his hand and curiously asked his friend.
Every individual who became a Disaster Purger, after passing their trials, would naturally be assigned work. That meant traveling to various parts of the world to fulfill their duties. Of course, their destinations would be adjusted according to their wishes. If a Purger wished to go to a certain location within the kingdom of Ravenraphael, and if that place’s quota had not yet been filled, they had a high chance of being assigned there.
“Me? I plan to return to my hometown, Ash Mountain.”
“Ash Mountain?”
“That’s right. I promised Angela that I’d go back and marry her once I passed the exam!”
“Wow, I didn’t expect someone as seemingly straightforward as you to have a childhood sweetheart hidden away!”
“Eh? I didn’t tell you?”
“No! I haven’t heard a single word about you having a bride waiting for you back home!”
“Is that so? Well, Angela is my childhood friend; we grew up playing together. I promised her that once I passed the Disaster Purger trial, I’d return to her!”
“No wonder you never seemed interested in the red-light district. So you already have a wife! What a surprise, what a surprise!” Aluk put on a wounded expression, feigning extreme grief, as if trying to convey the blow his fragile heart had suffered.
“Having a childhood sweetheart is one thing; the red-light district is another. Don’t mix them up, thank you! I’m not like you!” Gawain rolled his eyes. He knew his friend very well, understanding that Aluk simply wanted to tease him.
“It’s truly infuriating how people compare themselves to others! I’m so envious! Why don’t I have a childhood sweetheart I grew up with?!” Aluk shed imaginary tears of unwilling envy.
“What’s there to compare? Aluk, your conditions are good. As long as you rein in your playboy tendencies, finding a suitable female companion should be easy.” Gawain believed his friend’s lack of a girlfriend was purely due to his bad habits. After all, how could a guy whose head was constantly filled with thoughts of brothels win any decent girl’s affection?
“Gawain~”
“Hmm?”
“One should be broad-minded in life; you shouldn’t hang yourself on a single tree!”
“????”
“You can’t give up a whole forest for one tree! I, Aluk, even if I can’t find a girlfriend! Even if I starve to death! Even if I jump off the tallest building in this holy order! I will never give up other women for just one!”
“You’re hopeless.” After hearing Aluk’s speech, Gawain felt he could no longer communicate with the man.
“Just wait, little me will definitely become a First-Class Disaster Purger, then marry a beautiful, rich woman and become a winner in life!”
“Yes, yes, yes. So, are you planning to stay in the Royal Capital next?” Feeling that discussing this topic further was pointless, Gawain casually humored him and asked about his future plans.
“Hmm, there should be quite a few Disaster Purgers here in the Royal Capital. If possible, I’d like to develop in the north,” Aluk stroked his chin and thought seriously for a while before answering.
“The north? I remember there’s a place in the north known as Nasbiradon, the Land of Snow. Are you planning to go to Nasbiradon?” As soon as Aluk mentioned the north, the snowy country of Nasbiradon immediately surfaced in Gawain’s mind.
“Yes, I plan to develop there. I heard there’s a merchant caravan planning to head to Nasbiradon recently, so I can just hitch a ride.”
“Is that so? What a pity…” Gawain scratched his chin, a fleeting trace of sadness on his face.
“No need to look so glum. It’s not like we’ll never see each other again. As long as we’re alive, won’t we meet again eventually?” Aluk reached out and clapped Gawain on the shoulder, laughing heartily. It seemed he wasn’t saddened at all by their impending separation.
“That’s true. When we meet again, don’t you dare be dead, you hear me!”
“That’s what I should be saying to you!”
“Hahaha!”
“Hahaha!”
