After a long string of household chatter with Ninina, night fell.
The town lights flickered on.
Even at night, the flow of people in Glen Town hadn’t decreased much. The roads were busy with traffic, and crowds came and went without cease. There were even more street vendors and customers than during the day. I crossed the square and joined the grand array of street shoppers.
Although there were many weapon shops along both sides of the street, their prices were incredibly sentimental (expensive). For paupers like us, browsing the street stalls was the most suitable choice.
As the saying goes, a problem that can be solved with money is not a problem; having no money is the biggest problem. This saying is absolutely correct; I deeply experienced this in my past life.
“What do you need?”
“A spear.”
“Sorry, we don’t have any. We have the latest models of swords, would you like to take a look?”
“Thank you, no need.” After browsing several stalls, apart from one that sold a low-quality iron spear, the others didn’t even have a glimpse of a spear. It seems spearmen are terribly unpopular among the lower ranks of adventurers.
Didn’t they say an inch longer is an inch stronger? It’s really hard to understand why such a powerful weapon as a spear is at the bottom tier of adventurers.
“Isn’t that Liv!”
“Are you two also here to buy equipment?” Just as I was about to return to the inn with disappointment, Anthon the shield man and Font the slightly rogue-like swordsman from the team appeared before me.
“This kid Font wants to find some runes to augment his greatsword; I was dragged along by him.” As adventurers, if you don’t quickly update your equipment and strengthen yourself after making money, you can easily die.
Yes, directly wiped out by magical beasts or unknown dangers.
“Hahaha, anyway, you’re always idle. Isn’t accompanying me, young master, a good way to pass the time? If Liv is free, let’s shop together!”
“Okay.” With people familiar with the town, I might find a good spear, so I decided to join them.
“Heheh, it’s great to have a beauty accompany us! Too bad Yuli and Liliye didn’t come; otherwise, the scene would be even more beautiful!”
“…” Anthon witnessed Font’s exaggerated expression and looked like he wanted to say something but ultimately remained silent.
“I want to buy a spear. Do you know where I can find one?” Too lazy to chat with them, I went straight to the point.
“Old Man Anta might have one.”
“Really?”
“Might. I’m not certain,” Anthon replied casually.
“Old man Anta does indeed have all sorts of weird stuff. A spear is hard to say, since so few people use them. Let’s go check it out first!”
We almost reached the end of the street corner, where in a hidden spot, we arrived at Old Man Anta’s stall.
It was a small to medium-sized street stall, and the items being sold were all very ordinary, very much unlike what they described. Are they pulling my leg?
“Old man!”
“What do you want to buy this time?” Old Man Anta looked at least 70 years old, his gaze somewhat sharp, like a blade. His voice was very cold.
“I want a few fire runes, and this beautiful lady needs a good long spear!”
“Oh.” After a brief reply, Old Man Anta took out a large pile of items from his ring and threw them on the ground like trash. This method was exactly like Ninina’s. Is this how they sell things these days?
“Pick yourself.”
Finding something desirable from this mountain of various weapons, armor, and accessories, nearly two people tall, would definitely not be easy.
Overall, the quality of these items was many times worse than Ninina’s. The chances of finding a good spear seemed slim.
However, holding a sliver of hope, I still chose to browse through this junk-like mountain.
Anthon wasn’t there to buy anything, so he stood idly by, watching us sweat.
Honestly, this guy really has no team spirit. Although we were the ones buying, as a teammate, he couldn’t even offer a little help, which made him rather unlikable.
“Found it!” Font successfully found the runes. It seems I need to step up my game.
About ten minutes later, I had turned over nearly half of the small mountain, still finding nothing.
It seemed I wouldn’t be able to buy one today. Just as I was getting discouraged and ready to give up, something unexpected happened. A stinging pain shot through the back of my right hand, and a voice suddenly came into my mind.
‘Underfoot.’
I’ve heard this voice somewhere before; it feels a bit familiar.
“Liv, did you find a spear?”
“No, wait a bit longer. If I don’t find one, I won’t buy it.” Before I could identify whose voice it was, Font had already settled his bill and was standing nearby.
“Do you want help?”
“That would be great.”
‘Underfoot.’ Did that voice just now mean there was something below?
“Look here.” I’ll take a chance. If I can find one, that would be great.
Two people are more efficient than one. In a short while, they had turned everything nearby upside down, and indeed, they found a spear underneath—a red spear.
The moment I got it in my hand, I realized that it wasn’t a red spear at all; it was just a rusty lump of iron.
“You want to buy this thing?”
“There doesn’t seem to be anything better, right?” Indeed, after searching for a long time, I only found one spear. To buy it would be a waste of money, but not buying it felt reluctant. Sigh.
“How much for this spear?”
“Three gold coins.”
“Deal.” If it were too expensive, I wouldn’t buy it. Three gold coins are within budget.
“I’ll take this spear!”
Without warning, an abrupt voice appeared behind me.
The newcomer was a lavishly dressed man, seemingly around seventeen or eighteen years old. Even from a distance, I could feel his overbearing arrogance.
“I’ve already bought this spear.” I wasn’t going to be pleasant to this guy who suddenly appeared to snatch my item.
I quickly handed three gold coins to Old Man Anta and immediately put the spear away.
“One hundred gold coins, give me that spear!”
“Not for sale.” Who does this guy think he is, some fresh radish peel? My items aren’t something you can just buy if you want them.
“Say that again!”
“Liv, he’s Robert, one of Glen Town’s Four Young Masters. We can’t afford to offend him. Just give him the spear,” Font whispered in my ear.
“What Four Young Masters?”
“A shorthand for the four genius youths of Glen Town. They have great influence.”
“Not for sale.” So what if he’s one of the Four Young Masters? This young lady is still the strongest Archdemon King!
“You!” It seemed he had never been treated this way before. He clenched his fists in anger, his fierce gaze looking as if he wanted to tear me to shreds. “Good! Good! Good! You have guts. Since you won’t sell it, then let’s duel!”
He took off his left glove and threw it to the ground. The movement was very practiced, likely from many rehearsals.
“Too lazy to bother with you.” It would be strange if I actually acknowledged such a boring provocation.
“Now we’re in big trouble!”
“Why?”
“This duel cannot be refused.”
Only after Font said that did I remember. The Adventurer’s Handbook Ninina gave me indeed had related descriptions.
To resolve disputes between adventurers, a rule was established: if adventurers of the same rank have irreconcilable conflicts, they can resolve the issue through a duel.
Once a duel is provoked, if the other party doesn’t accept, it will be difficult to get by in the Guild afterwards. It’s like a deserter in my past life; once you back down, your life is ruined.
“Are you saying you refuse?” Robert sneered, his face full of mockery.
“Who said I refused? A duel, good, let’s duel now!” You bastard, coming to provoke me when you have nothing better to do. If I don’t beat you to death, I won’t be able to calm down.
