The Man in Black Robes: Stuttering is Harmful

Chapter 7 • 903 words • 8 min read

The moment the final spell left the Black-Robed Man’s lips, his withered fingers lifted and struck heavily against the door-like greatsword before him.

Dong.

The dull sound seemed to strike at the heart.

Then, without warning, the massive sword, thick as a door, slowly swung open from the middle, like a gate to another world.

From the crack, thick gray-white fog surged out, carrying a pungent stench of decay, instantly flooding the entire street.

Within the fog, faint black shadows, like freed ghosts, darted out and dived into the tombs of the gloomy cemetery that overlapped with the real world.

The ground began to shake violently.

Under their feet, the concrete split into wider cracks.

Tombs in the cemetery rose up.

Decayed, ragged skeletons climbed out of the pits, their bones clattering.

Even stranger, as they emerged, dark red flesh grew rapidly over their frames.

The flesh twisted and deformed, emitting sharp, chilling screeches.

In moments, the monsters formed from corpses took shape.

They were of all kinds, male and female, old and young, reeking of rot and darkness.

Their bodies were stiff, limbs bent at unnatural angles.

They moved slowly toward the Twin-Tail Girl, their eyes empty but filled with deadly malice.

The Twin-Tail Girl’s eyes narrowed.

Without hesitation, she drew two new throwing knives from her belt.

But her grip tightened involuntarily, her arm tensing.

It seemed this Black-Robed Man really was a counter to her.

Her speed advantage was useless against this overwhelming tide of corpses.

Right now, she wished she weren’t the one standing here.

‘Sister Xinya, if only you were here.’

But she knew Xinya couldn’t appear instantly.

Since it had come to this… fine!

Thirty-six strategies, the best is to run!

Making up her mind, she took a deep breath, steadied herself, and threw one of her knives straight up.

The zombie-like monsters around her moved slowly but were drawing closer.

The stench of rot hit her face.

The moment they lunged, she caught the knife she had thrown.

The next second, she vanished from her spot.

Almost instantly, she reappeared, the knife back in her hand.

She looked down at the dense sea of zombies and couldn’t help sighing.

Ten she could handle.

A hundred was pushing it.

But this crowd was just too much!

Thinking that, she sighed again, her face full of helplessness.

Suddenly, a sharp whoosh came from above and to the side.

Her expression hardened.

She reacted fast, spinning and stabbing backward with the knife.

A twisted, rotten zombie bird lunged at her.

The knife pierced it cleanly.

The knife sank deep into the bird’s body.

It didn’t even scream, its head drooping weakly.

She stared at the still bird, startled.

‘They have air power too?!’

She flicked her wrist, flinging the bird carcass off the knife.

With sharp eyes, she scanned the surroundings, locked onto a target, and threw the other knife.

At the same time, gravity pulled her back down.

But she wasn’t panicking.

She stared unblinkingly at the thrown knife.

The knife flew with a sharp whistle and embedded itself in a billboard by the street.

The moment it stuck, she clenched her fist and activated her ability.

Next second, she appeared by the billboard, gripping the knife to hang steady.

The billboard wasn’t too high, but it gave her a clear view of the situation, and the zombies on the ground couldn’t reach her.

She breathed a little easier.

But when she looked down, she froze.

The Black-Robed Man had laid his door-sized greatsword horizontally.

Countless zombies were carrying it forward.

He sat leisurely on the sword, legs dangling, looking completely relaxed.

Those who knew would say it was corpses carrying a greatsword.

Those who didn’t would think it was a zombie king riding a sedan chair.

He looked up and spotted the Twin-Tail Girl hanging on the billboard.

A strange smile curled on his lips.

His voice cut through the zombies’ howls: “Didn’t expect you to run so fast, little girl.”

The Twin-Tail Girl frowned but said nothing.

She watched the Black-Robed Man and his zombie army below, her mind racing for a countermeasure.

But then, his smile faded.

He looked at her in shock, his voice turning angry: “You called for backup?!”

The Twin-Tail Girl: “???”

‘I haven’t called anyone yet!’

Just then, she caught a flicker in the corner of her eye.

At the end of the street, something was flashing on and off.

Her heart tightened.

She turned to look.

When she saw it, her pupils shrank.

Her eyes went wide with shock.

Deep in the street, a blinding blood-red light flared up, stark against the eternal night.

The light grew brighter, flying fast toward her and the Black-Robed Man.

As it flew, the light expanded, growing larger.

As it got closer, its outline became clear.

It was a huge wheel of light, glowing with intense red.

Crimson light swirled around its edge, roaring as it charged.

Wait! Who’s the target…

The Twin-Tail Girl’s gaze snapped to the Black-Robed Man, disbelief in her eyes.

He looked confused by her stare: “What are you looking at me for?”

Twin-Tail Girl: “G-g-g-g-goodbye.”

Black-Robed Man: “?”

Twin-Tail Girl: “Goodbye.”

Black-Robed Man: “???”

He was about to say something when he noticed a red light enveloping him.

A bad feeling rose in his chest.

He slowly turned around.

A red energy wheel, carrying an astonishing momentum, was flying straight toward him.
