Death!

Chapter 17 • 1,169 words • 10 min read

Zhao Na saw the helpless look on Zhang Wei’s face.

A hint of shame crept onto her small face.

She lowered her head and whispered, “I’m sorry… I only remember my name, Zhao Na. I really can’t recall anything else.”

“Can’t remember?” Li Qiao looked at Zhao Na with sympathy. “Could it be amnesia?”

The middle-aged man beside her chimed in, “Possible.”

Hearing their guesses, Zhang Wei felt a flicker of hope.

He pressed on, “Think harder. Even tiny fragments. Is there anything else you can remember?”

The little girl who called herself Zhao Na furrowed her brows and thought hard.

Her gaze wandered unconsciously over the desks and chairs in the classroom.

Suddenly, as if something occurred to her, she hesitated, then let go of Bai Shuang’s skirt and slowly walked down from the platform.

Everyone’s eyes followed her.

Zhao Na walked straight to a desk.

The chair next to it was lying on the floor, out of place among the others.

She crouched down, reached into the desk drawer, and fumbled around.

Soon she pulled out a notebook.

On the cover, written in blue pen, were the words “Zhao Na”.

Zhang Wei immediately stepped forward and took the notebook from her.

He opened it eagerly and found several pages roughly torn out in the middle.

The ragged edges of the remaining paper were uneven.

He compared the content before and after and quickly concluded, the torn pages were the last few with writing in the diary.

Since he couldn’t read the rest, Zhang Wei suppressed his disappointment and flipped back to the earlier part.

“June 7, Saturday, Sunny”

“Just after dinner, my phone suddenly vibrated. The teacher sent a message to the seven of us, telling us to come to school.”

“The teacher’s message said there was an emergency and asked us to come to the training center.”

“When I arrived, the lights were off. The teacher probably hadn’t come yet.”

“I texted the teacher, and the teacher told me to go sit in my classroom.”

“I waited for a long time but no one came. I almost fell asleep.”

“After thinking it over, I slipped out of the classroom.”

“I wandered around and ended up at the calligraphy classroom door.”

“Since the teacher sent a group message, Qian Shi should be in the calligraphy classroom now. I walked over.”

“I saw Qian Shi lying there. I originally wanted to open the door and say hi to scare him.”

“Then I suddenly saw a figure.”

“I couldn’t see their face clearly. The person was bent over, wearing a hoodie with the hood up.”

“They grabbed Qian Shi’s neck with one hand, and with the other hand, they picked up something pitch black and started smashing it against Qian Shi’s head.”

“Qian Shi didn’t struggle for long before he went still.”

“I was so scared I turned and ran. When I reached the door, I found…”

“The door was locked.”

As soon as the diary entry was read, Zhao Na’s eyes gradually lit up.

Her previously blank gaze slowly focused.

She stared intently at the notebook in Zhang Wei’s hands, her small body trembling slightly.

Her voice carried an irrepressible excitement.

“I… I remember!”

“I remember part of what happened back then!”

Zhao Na looked up, her watery eyes fixed on the people present.

Her tone was pleading.

“But there’s still a lot that’s fuzzy. I… I want to remember more.”

“Uncle, big sisters, can you help me?”

Zhang Wei adjusted his glasses and nodded solemnly.

If his guess was right, the core task for them as reserve players was probably to help Zhao Na recover all her missing diary entries and piece together the complete truth.

Once they figured out what really happened in this training center back then, they would naturally find a way out and successfully complete the main quest of “Leaving the Tutoring Class.”

Just as Zhang Wei was considering where to explore next, the silent Bai Shuang suddenly spoke.

“Was the attacker in the diary male or female? Was it one of your teachers?”

Hearing the question, Zhao Na looked down embarrassedly, her small face full of guilt.

“I’m sorry… I don’t remember clearly.”

“The other person was wearing long pants and loose clothes. I couldn’t tell their gender…”

She paused, tried to recall, then added, “But I don’t think it was our teacher. The attacker was about the same height as Qian Shi.”

Her voice grew softer, as if blaming herself for not being able to provide more useful clues.

Zhang Wei quickly softened his tone.

“It’s okay, it’s okay. Remembering this much is already great. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.”

Once Zhao Na had calmed down a bit, Zhang Wei continued asking for key information.

“By the way, which course were you taking in this tutoring class?”

“I was studying writing.” Zhao Na looked up and answered softly.

“Do you remember the names and courses of the others who came to wait for the teacher?” Zhang Wei asked with anticipation in his eyes.

“I only remember Qian Shi studied calligraphy. The others… I can’t recall.” Zhao Na frowned, trying hard but finding nothing.

“Seven people… besides you two, there are five others.” Zhang Wei muttered to himself, pushing his glasses and analyzing.

“So we need to search other classrooms for clues. Since everyone had different courses, they probably attended classes in different rooms.”

Zhao Na nodded sheepishly.

“Yeah… that should be it.”

“What are we waiting for? Let’s go!”

Zhang Wei immediately made the decision and turned toward the classroom door, clearly eager to search for clues in other rooms.

Li Qiao and the middle-aged man quickly followed suit.

Zhao Na also stuck close to them, heading for the door.

As everyone prepared to leave, Bai Shuang didn’t move right away.

She first glanced casually at the fallen chair next to the desk where Zhao Na had found the notebook.

Then her gaze shifted slightly upward.

When her eyes landed on the chair next to that seat, her usually calm red eyes narrowed slightly.

‘Could it be…’

Just as Bai Shuang was pondering, Zhang Wei’s urging came from ahead.

“We’re leaving. It’s too dangerous to be alone in this instance. Hurry up and follow!”

Bai Shuang withdrew her gaze and silently walked toward the group.

When Bai Shuang reached the door, Zhang Wei didn’t delay any longer.

He grabbed the door handle and gave it a light tug.

The door didn’t budge.

He frowned, thinking he hadn’t used enough force.

He tried again, pulling harder.

The door still didn’t move, as if it had been welded shut.

Seeing that the door was as solid as a rock, he scratched his head, took a deep breath, and prepared to pull with all his might.

But just as he was about to yank, he felt something on the door panel.

He looked closely and saw that, somehow, a dark red brushstroke character had appeared right in the center of the door.

Death.
