The Death of the King of Soldiers

Chapter 1 • 1,331 words • 12 min read

Training camp.

The clash of metal equipment mixed with heavy breathing.

Special forces soldiers from over ten countries were doing physical training.

A muscular man slammed his comrade onto a mat in a shoulder throw.

A female soldier kicked off the wall beside her, dodging the rubber blanks fired at her.

Sweat and blood steamed and dissipated in the air.

The one thing that stood out was the man in the corner of the training ground.

He was an old man with an Asian face, lying on a lounge chair with an electric fan next to him.

He lounged there, his beach shirt hanging loosely on his body.

He occasionally took a sip of iced coffee, his face expressionless.

He held the latest smartphone in his hand, fingers sliding across the screen nimbly, completely out of sync with the intense training atmosphere.

Suddenly, a bell rang.

The noisy training in the room stopped abruptly.

The trainees who had been fiercely sparring froze in place.

Though motionless, they panted heavily, their stamina nearly exhausted, using this time to recover.

The old man in the corner stood up, gently brushed the dust off his clothes, and walked to the front of the group.

Looking at these elites from various nations, the old man nodded, put the whistle in his mouth, and blew a sharp sound.

Hearing the whistle, the scattered special forces soldiers immediately tensed up.

They gritted their teeth, pushed themselves off the ground, and quickly formed neat rows in standard military posture.

The old man clasped his hands behind his back, calmly scanning everyone present.

Seeing their standard stance, he nodded.

“Not bad, at least your stamina is decent.”

Among the group, some trainees with Chinese faces understood the Chinese words.

They tried to keep their expressions straight, but the corners of their mouths involuntarily turned up.

Being praised by him, their commanders back home would be jealous.

Having confirmed what he wanted, the old man said nothing more.

He continued in Chinese in a flat tone: “Class dismissed. Free time.”

With that, he turned and left the training room without caring whether the foreigners understood.

As the old man left, one Asian trainee finally let out a snicker.

That was like a starting gun.

More Asian trainees, or rather Chinese trainees, started laughing.

After exchanging glances, their laughter grew uncontrollable, turning into a full-blown roar.

Their laughter bewildered the others.

One trainee from Russia came over and threw his arms around two of them.

“Hey! Comrades, what are you laughing at?”

Hearing the Russian’s question, the Chinese trainees looked shocked.

“What, your commander didn’t tell you?”

“Tell us? Tell us what?”

The Russian trainee anxiously patted their shoulders.

“He really didn’t say anything! Brothers, just tell us!”

Some others nearby pretended not to care but perked up their ears.

One Chinese trainee cleared his throat and then announced loudly: “Ten years ago, terrorists stole the US nuclear launch codes, trying to destroy the five major nations and control Earth’s civilization!”

“A legendary agent, single-handedly, with only three seconds left on the launch countdown, shut down the launch program! And captured the mastermind alive!”

“Twenty years ago, another international terrorist group planned to attack a global summit with missiles. He charged into the terrorists’ lair alone, reverse-tracked them, and blew all those damn terrorists to bits!”

“Destroying the international human trafficking network ‘The Brotherhood of the Skinless,’ infiltrating an undersea base to stop a global gene weapon, he’s carried out no fewer than a hundred similar missions, each time saving the future of all mankind!”

The Chinese trainee recounted the legend’s deeds one by one.

The more he spoke, the more excited he became, his face reddening, as if he himself had done these things.

Meanwhile, the man being praised knew nothing of this.

Back in his room, the old man casually closed the door and placed his phone on the table.

He skillfully turned on the computer, set his coffee cup on the desk, and sat down in his computer chair.

Based on general experience, this legendary figure should be opening the computer to handle some work.

But unfortunately, no.

He rubbed his hands together, and the mouse cursor landed on a game icon with an anime-style girl’s avatar.

As the game login screen popped up, he rubbed his hands again, his face expressionless, but a flicker of light appeared in his cloudy eyes.

However, as he logged in, a window popped up.

Huh?

Ah, an ad.

The screen showed a girl with twin tails, mainly in black and white.

She wore a somewhat loose black-and-white coat, her collar high covering half her face.

Several gleaming throwing knives were strapped to her waist.

She swung her arm and threw a knife.

In the upper left corner, the title [Erosion World] stood out.

‘A new game…’

The old man leaned back in his chair, watching the ad, a hint of self-mockery in his tone.

‘Don’t know if I’ll live to see it released.’

Just then, he felt something was wrong.

Maybe he was old, and the chair was old too.

He heard a crack, probably plastic breaking, and then his whole body uncontrollably began to tip backward.

By the time he analyzed that one of the chair’s legs had snapped, it was too late to steady himself.

He fell, losing consciousness.

That was his last memory.

Well, following procedure, let’s sort things out.

My name is Bai Long, male, 98 years old, former agent, counter-terrorism operative, basically done all that kind of work.

Since starting my career, I’ve saved the world a double-digit number of times and saved my country a quadruple-digit number of times.

As for the details, after stopping the tenth terrorist who wanted to set off a nuke like fireworks, I stopped keeping count.

I thought someone like me would die in some accident.

But instead, I kept saving the world until I retired.

No wife or kids, no dog, and no one wanting revenge.

I was lying around in some compound, but then the International Joint Counter-Terrorism Academy invited me to be an instructor.

Of course, saying ‘instructor’, what I actually do is pretty much a vacation.

Except for some relevant technical courses I have to teach seriously, during physical training I just play on my phone.

In the end, it’s not like I’m slacking off.

The ones sent here to learn are all top talents.

They’re too busy competing to slack off.

As for how I spent my retirement…

Actually, I’m tired of most extravagant things.

Instead, I’ve started liking things kids might enjoy.

Anime, games, sci-fi movies.

Though many of these are absurd, I always find them fascinating.

Lately, I even started playing an anime-style game.

I was having a blast.

But after all, the game had been out for a year before I picked it up.

Even though my wallet is strong, I still lacked some items, which annoyed me.

But I heard that company is releasing a new game, and I was looking forward to it.

I even urged my old friend to push the company to finish the game and tell me when it would be out.

I heard it scared the kids at the company into working overnight, which made me feel a bit guilty.

So I sent my old friend over again to let the kids relax.

As for whether it bothered him…

Heh.

He’s my friend.

From the time he took office till now, I’ve saved him at least fifty times.

He owes me!

You’ve probably guessed the ending, I finished myself off.

Clearly, I’m no longer in the previous academy.

Feeling my body, it’s obviously not that aging, decrepit shell.

My long eyelashes blinked involuntarily as I began to review another memory in my mind.

My name is Bai Shuang, female, 18 years old, senior high school student.

To experience the life of a legendary military king, I asked my mother to send me to another world.

Bai Long: ????
