In the middle of May, An Cheng became sweltering.
The cicadas outside the window chirped noisily, drifting into the classroom with the wind.
It made it impossible for Shi Sui, who was sleeping on his desk in the back row, to rest peacefully.
He covered his ears with his hands to block the noise while his other elbow acted as a pillow.
His arms were long and rested relaxedly on the edge of the desk.
The half of his face that was visible showed smooth lines and very fair skin.
A sleep mark was pressed into his cheek, yet he was still pleasing to the eye.
The neighboring class had dismissed early, and several girls could not help but stop to steal glances at Shi Sui as they passed.
Suddenly, a small piece of chalk flew from the front and landed accurately on that face.
White chalk dust puffed up, abruptly shattering the atmosphere.
“Shi Sui! Tomorrow during morning self-study, I will randomly check the recitation of this text.”
“If you cannot recite it, you will stand at the back of the classroom for the entire lesson!”
The Chinese teacher Tian Hongjun’s voice was full of vigor, making the classroom vibrate.
Shi Sui was jolted awake and lifted his eyelids.
The corners of his eyes were slightly red from sleep, and his brow was furrowed, giving him a naturally fierce look.
He looked toward the podium, only to receive a glare from Old Tian.
“What are you looking at? I am checking you first tomorrow!”
Shi Sui: “…”
Tian Hongjun did not care at all about Shi Sui’s intimidating aura.
After finishing with him, the teacher closed the textbook and spoke of another matter.
“Tomorrow, a student will transfer to our class from Qinghe High School. I am giving you a heads-up.”
“Alright, class dismissed.”
Shi Sui’s deskmate, Wang Cheng, had also been dozing off.
Hearing Old Tian’s words, he hurriedly flipped through his textbook.
“Which section was Old Tian talking about? Do not get caught.”
“No need, I am skipping morning self-study tomorrow.”
Shi Sui yawned and prepared to go back to sleep, but Wang Cheng patted his shoulder.
“Wait, that kid Qian Hao from the class next door is looking for you again.”
Qian Hao had obvious bruises on the corner of his mouth and a bowl cut.
He had a fierce expression and looked even more like a thug than Shi Sui.
People in the class occasionally peeked toward the back door.
“What are you looking at!”
Qian Hao looked impatient.
After scaring off those annoying gazes, he turned around to see Shi Sui looking at him expressionlessly.
“Who allowed you to come to my class and act tough?”
“Get lost.”
Qian Hao felt a chill in his heart and immediately lowered his voice.
“Will you reconsider what I told you? The people from No. 3 High next door are going too far.”
“Lately in South Alley, the brothers have been bullied by them a lot.”
South Alley was a busy street nearby.
An Cheng No. 1 High and No. 3 High usually minded their own business there.
But recently the weather was hot and everyone was full of youthful energy; sometimes a single look could start a fight.
Qian Hao had suffered several losses and wanted to pull Shi Sui into his group.
After all, Shi Sui had dared to fight seniors right after graduating middle school and hit incredibly hard.
With him there, dealing with those brats from No. 3 High would be like slicing vegetables.
But Shi Sui did not care at all and was too lazy to pay him any attention.
Qian Hao took another step closer. “Shi Sui, you…”
Wang Cheng, seeing Qian Hao being persistent, gave a cold snort.
“What does you being bullied have to do with Shi Sui? Is he your father? Why should he stand up for you?”
They had no friendship with Qian Hao, so there was no reason to go up against those low-lifes from No. 3 High for him.
Qian Hao was already frustrated by Shi Sui’s cold shoulder.
Hearing this, his temper flared, and he kicked a chair in the last row hard.
With a loud bang, the originally noisy classroom suddenly went silent.
Shi Sui sat in the second to last row.
The two people in the last row had already run away when Qian Hao approached, so the seats behind were empty.
Everyone else in the classroom had lingering fear, afraid they would start fighting right then and there.
Wang Cheng was not easy to provoke either.
He cursed a f*ck, rolled up his sleeves, and wanted to fight, but Shi Sui pressed down on his shoulder.
Shi Sui looked at Qian Hao.
“Pick the chair up.”
His tone was calm.
Qian Hao did not move for a moment.
With so many people watching, Shi Sui was giving him no face at all.
However, he did not dare to talk back.
He had no doubt that if he refused, Shi Sui would immediately show him some color.
The owner of the chair saw things were going south and tactfully came over to pick up the chair.
He did not forget to explain to Shi Sui, “It is okay, the chair is not broken.”
This gave both sides a way out.
Shi Sui confirmed the person truly did not mind and did not pursue it further.
He patted Wang Cheng’s shoulder. “Want to go to the convenience store for popsicles? My treat.”
Wang Cheng froze, and his rising anger was instantly extinguished.
“Yes! I want the most expensive one!”
Shi Sui walked in front, looking at Qian Hao who was still standing at the door with an unwilling face.
“Do not block the way.”
He was a full half-head taller than Qian Hao.
As the two confronted each other, an invisible pressure washed over.
Qian Hao gritted his teeth and held out for less than half a second before stepping aside.
There were many people in the convenience store, all buying popsicles to satisfy their cravings.
After buying them, the two found a spot in the shade by the teaching building to rest.
The cold sweetness spread in their mouths, greatly relieving the summer heat.
Wang Cheng took a sip of icy water and stopped thinking about Qian Hao.
He casually brought up a topic. “Didn’t Old Tian say someone was coming from Qinghe High School?”
“Is that not the best high school in City A? The admission rate for top universities is 80%.”
“It is famous nationwide, so why would a student come to a small place like An Cheng?”
An Cheng No. 1 High was indeed the best here, but compared to Qinghe, it was completely insufficient.
He took out his phone.
“I will ask in the school group to see if anyone knows who this sacred being is.”
Shi Sui bit his popsicle and spoke unclearly.
“It has nothing to do with us no matter who it is.”
A nerd from that kind of school would not be their kind of person even if they ended up in the same class.
Wang Cheng said, “I was just thinking if we get on his good side, we won’t have to worry about exams or homework.”
“Oh.”
Shi Sui sucked on the shaved ice in his mouth and gave a perfunctory response.
“Wait, I got the name!”
Wang Cheng was about to show the chat records to Shi Sui when he suddenly saw a familiar figure ahead.
He was so startled he immediately hid his phone.
“Holy sh*t, is that not the Dean?”
He tucked his phone away before noticing something odd.
“What is the background of that kid next to the Dean? He is not even wearing a school uniform.”
One must know that not wearing a uniform was a privilege only troublemakers like Shi Sui had.
That person was clearly a new face.
Even more ridiculous was that the Dean was wearing a full formal suit in the middle of summer.
Long sleeves and trousers—it looked hot just looking at him.
Shi Sui looked up in the direction Wang Cheng pointed.
His gaze lingered on the Dean’s belly, which was straining against his shirt buttons, for two seconds before moving to the person beside him.
The person was facing away from them.
He was very tall, wearing a simple white short-sleeved shirt and casual pants.
He carried a backpack on his right shoulder and stood very straight.
Under the sun, he looked like a sturdy pine tree, carrying a natural aura.
He walked one step behind the Dean, occasionally nodding in response to the Dean’s words.
The atmosphere between the two seemed very harmonious.
But Shi Sui did not know if it was an illusion, but he felt that person looked toward him from time to time.
Even the Dean’s gaze followed.
Shi Sui was not wearing his uniform today; if he were checked, he would get scolded.
Anyone else might have avoided them, but that was clearly not going to happen with Shi Sui.
Shi Sui narrowed his eyes and bit down, finishing the popsicle.
With a casual toss, he threw the stick into a distant trash can on the right.
Actually, the nearest trash can was right at his feet.
But he did not choose that one; the other trash can was directly in that person’s direction.
Clang.
A subtle provocation.
The person’s footsteps paused slightly as he turned his head.
Their gazes briefly met in the air.
The other party was dressed cleanly and refreshingly.
Shi Sui was wearing a skull shirt and ripped jeans, creating a sharp contrast.
Shi Sui’s eyes were cold, not giving an inch.
Wang Cheng was completely unaware of the confrontation.
He wondered aloud, “This is the first time I have seen the Dean so friendly. What is this guy’s deal?”
Their Dean was famous for being strict and always had a stiff face.
Now, he was practically beaming.
Shi Sui saw the other party withdraw his gaze first before looking down.
He returned to his lazy posture, leaning against the tree with his hands in his pockets.
“Didn’t Old Tian say a transfer student was coming?”
Wang Cheng realized. “That is really possible!”
Then the Dean must be showing the transfer student around the school.
To get such attention from the Dean, this person must not only have good grades but likely a significant background.
“I am telling you, his shoes alone cost nearly five figures.”
“I just found out his name too. It is something like… Lu Huaizhi…”
He was about to take out his phone to make sure he remembered correctly.
But he saw Shi Sui had already straightened up with a look of disinterest.
“Let’s go, back to the classroom.”
As soon as the school bell rang, Shi Sui grabbed his bag and prepared to leave.
He had a part-time job at an internet cafe today and needed to get there early.
The internet cafe was in South Alley.
This was an area where public security was very messy.
There were many unlicensed internet cafes and KTVs where many students went for fun after school.
Shi Sui looked straight ahead, walking through long, dim alleys.
As he was about to turn into an even narrower alley entrance, his footsteps suddenly stopped.
It was a bit too quiet.
It was currently right after school, the time with the most foot traffic.
It was impossible for an alley to be completely empty.
He stood there for a few minutes, but no one passed by.
If he took a detour, he would have to walk an extra ten minutes.
Shi Sui’s gaze fell on the seemingly peaceful path ahead.
He clicked his tongue impatiently.
He wrapped his backpack strap around his palm a few times, gripped it tight, and stepped inside.
The dim streetlights overhead barely illuminated the situation in the alley.
A few hooligans had cornered a girl in a short skirt against the wall.
They threatened her, “Our Brother Niu has liked you for a long time.”
“Always keeping him hanging like this, is that not a bit disrespectful?”
One of the girl’s shirt buttons had been torn off.
She was terrified, clutching her clothes and crying.
“I clearly already rejected him…”
Shi Sui recognized these people as the annoying brats from the neighboring school.
Even though the light was dim, it was enough for him to see the An Cheng No. 1 High school emblem on the girl’s sleeve.
The leader used a wooden stick to flip the girl’s skirt hem flirtatiously.
But before he could apply any upward force, he heard a scream from a friend on guard nearby.
Shi Sui kicked someone over.
Holding his backpack strap, he unhesitatingly swung the bag at the head of someone coming to help.
He struck ruthlessly, specifically targeting painful areas like the stomach and face.
The group of people grimaced and cried out as their wails spread throughout the alley.
Brother Niu recognized Shi Sui and said sharply, “Shi Sui, you better not mind other people’s business.”
Shi Sui laughed. “I just happen to want to mind it.”
Brother Niu did not respond for a moment.
Shi Sui’s reputation for violence was even greater than his own.
If they really fought, he would not come out on top.
Before he could think of a plan, Shi Sui suddenly moved close to him.
He grabbed his wrist and twisted it, then kicked the back of his knee.
He forced him to kneel down.
Shi Sui grabbed his hair, forcing Brother Niu to look up.
“Using these kinds of methods to bully girls, huh?”
Both of Brother Niu’s hands were restrained.
He instinctively tried to struggle and cursed loudly, “You f*cking…”
He did not know which word triggered Shi Sui.
His face darkened instantly.
He pressed Brother Niu’s head and slammed it directly into the wall.
With a bang, the alley suddenly went quiet.
Everyone was stunned.
It was only when Brother Niu felt the warm liquid sliding down his face and the faint smell of blood that he snapped back in severe pain.
His lips trembled, but he was too terrified to speak.
Shi Sui was truly too ruthless.
The force of that single blow scared the soul out of him.
Shi Sui looked down at the blood on Brother Niu’s forehead.
“Are you behaving now?” he asked.
Brother Niu endured the pain.
Although he was unwilling, he was at someone else’s mercy and had to soften his tone.
“I am sorry…”
But Shi Sui did not accept it.
He grabbed his hair and turned his head in another direction.
“Who are you saying sorry to?”
The girl leaned against the wall.
She saw the previously arrogant Brother Niu covered in blood and wall dust.
Under Shi Sui’s coercion, he apologized to her in a pathetic and ridiculous manner.
“I am sorry…”
Brother Niu’s voice was very small.
Shi Sui clicked his tongue. “Playing this game with me?”
After saying that, he applied force with his hand, acting as if he were going to slam Brother Niu’s head against the wall again.
Brother Niu’s face turned white with fear.
This time he did not hesitate and shouted, “I am sorry!”
The voice was loud enough to be heard several streets away.
Only then was Shi Sui satisfied.
He nodded to the girl who was lost in her fright. “You go first.”
After the girl left, he released his hold on Brother Niu and kicked him in the back.
“In the future, do not let me see you on this street again.”
“Get lost.”
Having said that, he leisurely organized his textbooks that had flown out of his bag.
The originally brand-new books were covered in quite a bit of dust.
Shi Sui did not even look at them before throwing them into his bag.
Brother Niu climbed up from the ground pathetically.
He wiped the blood from his forehead, hating Shi Sui so much his teeth almost shattered.
He wanted revenge, but the pain in his forehead left him without the courage.
He gave Shi Sui a wary look before finally turning to leave.
Once the people were far away, Shi Sui’s clenched fist at his side gradually relaxed.
He looked down and lifted the hem of his shirt under the streetlight.
Some of those people had reacted quickly and hit him several times.
Sure enough, there was a patch of dark purple on his waist and abdomen.
Shi Sui expressionlessly pressed the most painful spot.
It was not broken.
After confirming they were just superficial injuries, Shi Sui let down his clothes and picked up his bag.
As soon as he took a step, his body suddenly froze.
Under the streetlight, a person’s shadow had appeared.
Looking at the position, they were standing not far behind him.
He had focused most of his attention on the direction Brother Niu and the others left.
He had not paid attention to the back.
He did not know when this person had arrived or how long they had been watching.
In any case, they did not come with good intentions.
Shi Sui poked his back molar with the tip of his tongue, his eyes full of coldness.
Fine, there is more work to do.
