The gray-blue sky had not yet fully shed the darkness of night.
Streetlights spread faint halos of light through the thin mist, dyeing the road in an amber hue.
Traffic lights flickered, and vehicles passed by only sparsely.
On the empty street, a girl dressed in a nun’s habit suddenly appeared in front of a café that had yet to open, without any warning.
What was puzzling was that the passersby merely cast a hurried glance at her, then continued on their way as if nothing were amiss, as though the girl naturally belonged there.
“Wow! Running iron boxes, projection devices with sound, and even every building is built as tall as a magic tower!”
The girl looked around her surroundings, excitedly talking to herself.
There was hardly any need for doubt—this mysterious girl was a transmigrator.
However, judging by her attire, Flona was somewhat different from ordinary transmigrators.
She was a saint from a Western fantasy world.
More precisely, a saint who had just finished subjugating the Demon King and stepped into retirement.
Because the newly appointed saint was lacking in ability, the church still sent her endless piles of documents to sign.
To Flona, how was this retirement at all?
It was clearly just changing workplaces.
What was even more fatal was that after being exhausted from signing documents during the day, she still had to deal at night with an annoying goddess who liked to treat her as a dress-up doll.
Whenever there was a chance for divine descent, the goddess would attach herself to Flona and play outfit-changing games—tailored uniforms, body-hugging aprons, cat-eared maid outfits.
All under the pretense of “caring for a retired official.”
One should know that back during the journey to subjugate the Demon King, Flona had never seen the goddess descend so frequently.
She must have stayed in the divine realm for too long and gotten overly repressed.
But as the bridge between gods and the mortal world, every time the goddess descended, it was Flona’s energy that got consumed!
As a result, she was listless during morning prayers at the church, and the village even produced absurd rumors like “Shocking! The former saint indulges excessively every night.”
She couldn’t afford to offend them—couldn’t she at least avoid them?
After careful consideration, Flona finally modified the hero-summoning magic circle and transmigrated in reverse to the modern world.
This was perfect.
She had hidden herself in another world—there was no way the church or the goddess could directly chase after her now!
Just as Flona was feeling smug, two unusual fluctuations of magical power appeared within her perception.
“Don’t run!”
Immediately afterward, an angry shout rang out, startling Flona.
No way, did they really chase her here?
“Look! It’s the magical girl Silver Moon!”
“No way? Wait, it really is Silver Moon-chan!”
“Ah! Silver Moon-chan’s bunny ears are bouncing, so cute. I really want to rub them!”
Amid the crowd’s shouts, two streaks of light crossed in the sky after colliding, quickly entering a standoff.
So they weren’t here to catch her.
Flona let out a sigh of relief, though she was also a little puzzled.
Magical girl?
Did that mean a young female mage capable of casting spells?
But she remembered that this modern society wasn’t supposed to have supernatural powers.
With this thought in mind, Flona looked up and saw a silver magical girl floating in the air.
“Tell me where my senior is, now!”
“Kah! Beat me first.”
Fighting against the silver magical girl was a strange creature with wings growing from its back.
“Then I’ll beat it out of you!”
Frosty mist surged at Silver Moon’s fingertips, forming a magic circle of the same color.
Energy bullets wrapped in icy-blue tail flames tore through the air, shooting straight at the monster.
Already anticipating this, Flona avoided the range of the magic barrage, watching the street become pockmarked from the aftermath and the crowd flee in all directions.
The creature carried twisted malice and faint magical power. Although it stood on two legs, its body was covered in black feathers, and its mouth was a hooked raven’s beak… from this alone, it was undoubtedly a raven monster.
Using the local term, a raven creature.
And the one holding the upper hand in the battle, the girl with fluffy bunny ears atop her head, was the one people called the magical girl “Silver Moon.”
Her flowing silver gauze dress fluttered, yet did not hinder her movements at all.
But why did she also carry malice—and so much of it that it was about to overflow?
Moments later, the raven creature’s sharp wing feathers broke through the magic barrier, cutting a bloody gash across her arm.
Yet in the blink of an eye, the wound vanished without a trace.
No chanting for spellcasting, malice clinging to her, rapid regeneration.
As the clues came together, a familiar memory surged toward Flona.
A witch!
Girls of suitable age who signed contracts with unknown gods and received special blessings could become witches.
They possessed extremely high magical affinity and nearly ageless, immortal vitality—practically a different species from humans.
But what was the price?
They would become vessels for malice. As the malice continually eroded them, reason would be lost, consciousness would sink, and they would turn into madmen who destroyed order.
In the past, Flona, as a saint, would have immediately invoked divine arts to take down these two monsters in the sky.
But now she only wanted to enjoy a peaceful retirement, and it was better not to stir up extra trouble.
As long as the witch didn’t lose control or cause destruction, there was no need for her to deal with one.
Feeling that even the good mood she had after escaping the goddess was being ruined, Flona put on a dead-fish stare and prepared to withdraw from this ominous area.
Then, in the very next second, a sense of danger suddenly welled up in her heart.
Sensing that something was wrong, Flona immediately looked up…
What entered her sight was the raven creature knocking Silver Moon back and flying straight toward her.
“No good, this magical girl is too strong. I need to find a hostage.”
Panicking, the raven creature set its sights on the seemingly weak Flona.
“?”
Hey, can you pick someone else?
Flona looked around and realized that everyone else had already fled without a trace.
Only she remained, someone who didn’t shy away from trouble.
If it didn’t grab her, who else could it grab?
Meanwhile, Silver Moon, who had been forced back, saw Flona and immediately became flustered.
Why was there still a civilian over there? She had clearly used magic bullets to warn them.
“Please don’t come any closer!”
“What nonsense are you babbling? Just behave and be a good hostage.”
As the raven creature ignored her words and stubbornly advanced toward her, Flona revealed a look of resignation.
“Zzz—!”
In that instant, the sound of something igniting rang out.
Shockwaves surged, and the impacted glass shattered into fragments, scattering everywhere.
Silver Moon widened her eyes, staring at everything before her now engulfed in dazzling flames.
Damn it, this monster actually attacked an ordinary civilian directly!
Waving her hand to disperse the smoke, the furious Silver Moon even drew out the spiritual twin blades she rarely used. “If you wanted to anger me, then I can only say—you succeeded.”
“Prepare to di—”
After fully seeing the situation, the words at Silver Moon’s lips abruptly cut off halfway, her slightly parted lips frozen as if she wanted to speak but couldn’t.
The raven monster that should have been attacking a civilian lay motionless on the ground. Sparks still lingered among its feathers, and there was even a faint smell of burning.
And the so-called ordinary civilian Silver Moon had assumed was already nowhere to be seen.
…
Using a flickering divine art to hide in an alley, Flona shook her head. “I told you not to come over.”
Served right for being judged by holy flames.
Looking back outside once more…
“As expected of Magical Girl Silver Moon! Once again, she’s protected our city.”
Gradually, people gathered again, offering cheers to the bewildered magical girl.
Why did witches and monsters appear in modern society?
Flona felt a vague sense of worry about her retirement life ahead.
