Upon entering the gymnasium, I noticed three young men huddled together on the basketball court, engaged in what appeared to be a serious discussion. Intrigued, I drew closer to discern the situation.
“How are we supposed to play with just three of us?” Yuusuke questioned, his voice laced with doubt.
“It’s no matter,” Kitajima declared, brimming with confidence as he addressed Takagi and Yuusuke, “the two of you can challenge me together!”
“You cheeky fellow… are you truly underestimating our combined strength?! Listen well, Takagi! Even with just the two of us, the power of teamwork will secure our victory!”
“Er… still, I can’t shake the feeling that it’s a bit unfair,” Takagi mumbled, scratching his head in mild discomfort.
Basketball… it brought back memories of a time when I, too, cherished playing the sport with my friends. We would always share laughter and lively conversations. In this very moment, a powerful wave of nostalgia washed over me, a yearning for those days spent with companions I could truly call “brothers.”
“In that case, count me in.”
As I offered my suggestion, their gazes first met mine with utter astonishment, their eyes widening into perfect circles. Then, their jaws collectively dropped, leaving them speechless and agape.
“What’s gotten into you three?”
“Kamimura-san, you play basketball?!”
“No way…”
“Well, you certainly can’t judge a book by its cover…”
“I picked up a few things back then; I can still hold my own.”
“Alright, then let’s divide into two teams. The first to score five points wins. How about a round of rock-paper-scissors to determine sides?”
“Kitajima,” Yuusuke said with a mischievous grin, “if I end up on your team, you’ll have to remember to go a little easy on the lady, alright?”
“Haha, don’t fret; I know my limits,” he replied with a confident chuckle.
“It’s quite alright,” I interjected, “if no one brings their true skill to the court, this match will simply be dull, won’t it?”
“Hahahahaha!” Kitajima burst out, his excitement palpable after hearing my words. “Kamimura-san, you truly are a spirited young woman! I wholeheartedly accept your proposal!”
Yuusuke’s lips curled into an unconscious smirk. Takagi, however, regarded me with a gaze that flickered with an unreadable emotion.
“Still, we’re missing a referee…”
“Leave that to me,” a voice chimed in. Suzuki Minoru had materialized beside us, seemingly out of nowhere.
“…But…”
“Let’s proceed,” I decided, “Suzuki will be our referee.” I readily agreed to his unexpected offer.
“Rock, paper, scissors! Rock, paper, scissors! Rock, paper, scissors! Rock, paper, scissors!”
“No way… teams decided just like that… it seems I really am on your side, Kitajima.”
“Kamimura-san, I knew it; I’m paired with you. Let’s give it our all!”
“Right, let’s focus on good teamwork.”
Suzuki tossed the ball into the air. Yuusuke, with a powerful leap, soared above the others to snatch possession. He then sprinted towards the basket, executing a convincing pump fake that drew Takagi’s attention away, allowing him to deftly pass the ball to Kitajima.
Kitajima, cradling the ball, took one step, then two, then three, before launching himself skyward. With a smooth layup, he successfully scored.

I had underestimated them… Their physical prowess was clearly on an entirely different level than mine. This body of mine was already gasping for breath after just a few sprints…
This time, Takagi passed the ball to me. I drove straight for the basket, yet was intercepted. In that split second, I spotted Takagi open and swiftly passed the ball. Immediately, the ball soared towards him. With a resolute gaze, Takagi seized it. His right foot crossed the three-point line the instant he caught the ball, his left following suit, settling into a stable, horse-stance-like posture. He cradled the ball against his chest, then, suddenly rising onto his tiptoes, he launched it. With a resounding clang, the ball swished through the net.

Takagi, that kid, wasn’t half bad… We only needed two more points to secure victory. Yet, Kitajima, across the court, seemed to have transformed. His usually bright and handsome face now bore an intensely serious and solemn expression.
He received the ball and sprinted, a blur of motion as he dashed towards the basket with lightning speed, while I pursued him relentlessly. He gathered the ball with both hands, poised to shoot, but I couldn’t afford to give him an opening; I had to defend him with absolute vigilance. Another dribble now would mean a double dribble. He was faced with two choices: pass the ball to Yuusuke or take a shot himself. But Yuusuke was currently tightly guarded by Takagi, leaving Kitajima to rely solely on his own skill. He swayed the ball from side to side with both hands, a calculated maneuver to obscure his intended shooting direction. Then, in a sudden burst, he leapt to his right, twisted his body, and with a powerful thrust of both hands, launched the ball towards the hoop. A resounding “clang” echoed, and the ball swished through!

Just as I had feared… we had lost.
“That was truly an exhilarating performance from everyone!” he exclaimed, clapping his hands with a beaming smile, full of praise.
“It seems I still can’t quite match your speed,” I admitted with a wry, helpless smile.
“Kamimura-san, you played exceptionally well, especially that last pass,” Takagi stated earnestly.
“Thank you. Takagi-kun, your three-pointer was quite impressive as well.”
“I-is that so… Th-thank you…” He suddenly became flustered, a blush creeping onto his face, his eyes darting away, unable to meet my gaze directly.
“…………Hey, are you two seriously making me feel like a third wheel here?”
“Yuusuke, what kind of nonsense are you spouting?!” Takagi exclaimed, quickly stepping forward to interject.
Perhaps, no one but me registered the unusual pallor of Kitajima’s face. He was drenched in sweat, so much so that his white basketball uniform was soaked through and had even begun to change color.
“Kitajima-kun, are you feeling alright?” I inquired, a flicker of concern prompting me to step closer.
“Ah… I… I have a bit of a headache…” he stammered, “My apologies, I’m feeling a little unwell. I’ll just sit and rest nearby for a while…” He moved with such deliberate slowness that it was difficult not to question whether his headache was truly the cause.
I couldn’t shake the feeling that his right leg seemed out of sync with his left, but before I could scrutinize it further, he had already settled down to rest.
“Is… is he going to be alright?” Yuusuke asked me, his brow furrowed with curiosity.
“…Perhaps.”
Afterwards, I retreated to my room to refresh myself with a towel-down, then made my way to the dining hall for a bite to eat.
“I can’t take this anymore,” Amemiya declared, her frustration evident. “We’ve been stuck here for almost two days, and there’s truly no clue on how to escape?”
“A way to escape… isn’t there one?” Suzuki Minoru’s voice cut through the air, and I instantly braced myself, fully anticipating the deeply malicious words that were about to follow…
“W-what is it?!”
“Murder,” Suzuki stated, an unsettling smile blossoming on his face the very next second. No one present could fathom how he managed to utter those two words with such chilling nonchalance.
“M-murder…?” Even the usually fiery Amemiya was instantly struck dumb by the chilling word.
“Exactly. If one of us commits a murder and isn’t discovered, wouldn’t that be our ticket out?”
“What utter nonsense are you spouting?!” Habara exclaimed, visibly agitated by Suzuki’s words. “Everyone here is getting along harmoniously! Why would you utter such unsettling words and sow discord among us?!”
“Y-yes, exactly… murder… I couldn’t possibly do something like that…”
“Even the mere mention of murder fills me with dread…”
“Surely, no one among us would stoop to such a foolish act for a reason like that, would they?”
“Besides, if someone actually committed murder, the police would surely apprehend them.”
“Perhaps if we just wait a few more days, the police will arrive to rescue us…”
“Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha!”
The source of that grotesque laughter was none other than Monokuma.
“Police…! Are you truly still clinging to the hope of ‘police’?”
Misfortune, a relentless wanderer, typically meanders along its path, alighting upon one person, then another. Yet, in this chilling moment, it had descended upon every single one of us.
This day, it seemed, had finally arrived.
