“Yes! I’ll never make that mistake again, Mother.”
“Go on, who’s your mother? Don’t you want to acknowledge me? I am your…”
Ji Xue tried to articulate, but her words caught in her throat, her face flushing crimson as she struggled to utter the rest of the sentence.
With her hesitation, the opportunity to speak further slipped away.
“This is the place! Quickly!”
Liu Ruyan had already arrived with the physician.
As the two landed in the courtyard, the sound of their arrival was almost drowned out by Liu Ruyan’s booming voice.
“Hurry and save Sister Wan’er!”
Liu Ruyan’s urgent cry, laced with a desperate sob, seemed to rip through the tense air inside the room.
“Personal Disciple Liu, please be calm.”
A voice, cool and placid, drifted in from outside the door.
Its unhurried cadence stood in stark contrast to Liu Ruyan’s frantic anxiety, like a tranquil cold pond against a raging fire.
“If the root of the illness remains undiscovered and the pulse unexamined, it is akin to chasing shadows in the wind; haste serves no purpose.”
The voice possessed a strange, magnetic quality, each syllable’s lingering echo seeming to pierce the heart, yet remaining too ethereal to grasp.
Liu Ruyan, however, was in no state to heed such advice.
She stumbled out the door, then frantically bounded back to the bedside, her distress palpable.
Immediately after, the doorway’s light was softly intercepted by a figure.
A woman, clad in peculiar attire, slowly stepped inside.
Lin Mo, mustering a sliver of his strength, slightly turned his head to look.
The moment his gaze met the newcomer, a trace of astonishment stirred within him.
The woman possessed a slender figure, draped in a long robe of pristine, almost dazzling white, utterly free of blemish.
Yet, beneath the immaculate white, a light blue pleated skirt of a distinctly different fabric peeked out, resembling a faint line of life quietly burgeoning at the edge of a snowfield.
Even more breathtaking was her hair color—a deep, night-like green that cascaded over her shoulders and back like intertwining vines, making the white robe appear even more otherworldly, stark and striking.
A gray cloth strip, about an inch wide and of unknown material, was tightly bound over her eyes, leaving not the slightest gap.
‘A physician walking into a patient’s room blindfolded?’
Her steps were steady, her footfalls almost imperceptible.
Her movements were as gentle as a brush of snow, devoid of any stiffness or hesitation, as she advanced directly and steadily towards the bed where Lin Mo lay.
It was as if the gray cloth obscuring her vision was entirely useless.
“Sister Wan’er! This is the chief physician of the Hall of Clarity! Senior Sister Yuan Huilan!”
“Hello, Personal Disciple Lin.”
Yuan Huilan offered a slight bow, neither servile nor arrogant.
“Personal Disciple Lin, please excuse my intrusion.”
Before her words fully faded, the chief physician had already settled silently onto the edge of the bed, completely disregarding any potential dust.
Her face, obscured by the gray cloth and deprived of sight, tilted slightly towards Lin Mo’s wrist.
Without the slightest fumble or delay, her hand, like sculpted jade, rested with uncanny precision and steadiness upon his pulse point.
“Senior Sister Yuan, my apologies for the trouble. It’s just a minor illness, nothing serious.”
Lin Mo spoke.
Since he was genuinely injured, his voice naturally carried a hint of weakness without any need for pretense.
“Is that so.”
Yuan Huilan offered a faint smile, offering no further reply.
A long silence ensued as Yuan Huilan remained utterly engrossed in taking Lin Mo’s pulse.
Only occasionally would her brow furrow slightly, as if she had detected something alarming.
Even knowing that Mu Qingli’s Profound Yin Qi provided cover, allowing someone to take his pulse still left him feeling uneasy.
Thus, Lin Mo spoke, hoping to divert Yuan Huilan’s attention:
“Senior Sister Yuan, the blindfold… is it…?”
“An eye ailment. I tend to see too much, so I simply covered them.”
“It doesn’t affect my daily life; in fact, covering them is precisely why it doesn’t affect my daily life.”
“Oh?”
Lin Mo felt a flicker of curiosity.
“Seeing too much isn’t a good thing?”
‘Is it a good thing?’
“……It is merely my personal perspective, Personal Disciple Lin. Have you experienced any dizziness or headaches recently?”
“Not at all. I only frequently feel weak and lack strength.”
“I see. Does your spiritual energy circulate smoothly?”
“Occasionally it becomes obstructed, but as long as I don’t cultivate for extended periods, there are no major issues.”
“Speaking of which, the people Ruyan called earlier were not always the same. Is that because—?”
“It’s a rotation. Today is my shift. The notes on the patients visited today and their conditions are recorded in a shared written log and on recording stones, so Personal Disciple Lin need not worry about any errors.”
Her answer was so perfectly delivered that Lin Mo found himself at a loss for words.
He could only wait with a sense of trepidation for Yuan Huilan to finish taking his pulse.
Immediately after, the conversation ceased.
After approximately a quarter of an hour, Yuan Huilan finally withdrew her hand and softly addressed Liu Ruyan:
“It’s nothing major. Her meridians are slightly damaged, but rest will suffice.”
“Based on the diagnostic records left by my junior sisters in the past few days, combined with my recent examination, the conclusion is sound. With a bit more rest, she will make a full recovery.”
“Then… then that’s good… The injury… there are no signs of it worsening, are there?”
“You may rest assured. What you told me on the way here has caused no harm. Please be at ease.”
Upon hearing this reply, Liu Ruyan and Ji Xue finally let go of their worries completely.
“It’s just…”
Yuan Huilan then turned her head to look at Lin Mo.
For some reason, Lin Mo felt as though the eyes behind that gray strip were keenly scrutinizing him.
“It’s just what?!”
Ji Xue and Liu Ruyan’s voices instantly escalated.
‘Oh! It’s unrelated to the injury! Feel relieved.’
A soft chuckle escaped her.
“It’s just that Personal Disciple Lin is quite interesting, and I’d like to understand her better.”
“If you have time, would you consider visiting me at the medicine hall? I’ll be on duty for the next few days. I wish to get to know Personal Disciple Lin properly.”
‘?’
Yuan Huilan spoke, gradually leaning closer, so close she was almost about to kiss him!
“Personal Disciple Lin’s sachet is rather nice, a blend of two fragrances. Are you interested in adding another?”
With that, disregarding the stunned expressions of the three, Yuan Huilan rose and bid farewell to Liu Ruyan and Ji Xue before departing.
She left, but he was left in a terrible predicament!
The two women’s gazes were burning, as if they were about to roast him alive!
‘Don’t tell me…’
The two women slowly approached, causing Lin Mo to instantly pull his small blanket tighter as he loudly declared:
“I won’t go! I won’t! I absolutely won’t go, even if it kills me! You can rest assured!”
Only after this fervent assurance did the two women’s eyes, which had gradually grown vacant and shimmered with a dark glow, slowly soften, replaced by gentle smiles as they began to inquire about his well-being.
“Rest well and recover. I’ll be right here by your side.”
“Sister Wan’er, don’t you worry! I’ve brewed some soup, a fresh batch! It’s full of potent supplements! It will definitely help you recover quickly! Then you won’t have to go find Senior Sister Yuan!”
“I, I possess advanced healing pills! Don’t be afraid, I’ll go brew an even more nourishing soup right away! We won’t need this little girl or that Yuan Huilan anymore!”
Watching this scene unfold, Lin Mo wondered if it was merely his imagination…
‘Were all the women in this sect… a little yandere?’
‘He felt as though, if he said the wrong thing, he might end up like a certain high school student who could travel the world with just his head!’
