That The Great Compassion Mantra went viral in such a way was something Mo Bai
himself had never expected.
But as more and more people began to understand The Great Compassion Mantra, Mo
Bai vaguely noticed that his divine power was recovering a little faster.
Looking into it, he found that it was because those who had been soothed by his
chanting of The Great Compassion Mantra had formed a faint causal connection
with him, bringing him this benefit as well.
Mo Bai murmured to himself, “Good things like this can happen?”
He quickly remembered that back on Earth, there seemed to be other gods who had
done the same thing.
Because in the 21st century, materialism was truly rampant.
Believers were too few. In order to compete for followers, the various gods had
to learn everything across three hundred and sixty trades.
And us Wish-Granting Gods really had the hardest time.
Most people’s wishes were for wealth.
Those seeking wealth would be snatched away directly by the God of Wealth.
The remaining people wished for good health, and there were also gods
specifically in charge of health.
A small portion of parents who wished for their children’s academic success
would go and worship the Star of Wisdom.
Even for romantic fate, there was the Old Man Under the Moon to pray to.
This forced the other gods to learn other ‘skills’ to gain faith.
The life of a god was very hard.
He remembered there was a God of Wealth back then who was very skilled. He even
went to the mortal world to participate in a talent show and became a celebrity,
gaining a large number of fans and thus a considerable amount of faith power.
Sometimes faith power didn’t come from superstition or spiritual sustenance.
It was more like a kind of belief.
If you gained a certain belief, a certain strength, or a certain spirit from me,
then I could also gain faith from you. This was a very wonderful causal
relationship.
And now, he seemed to understand why that God of Wealth had been able to gain so
much faith after becoming a celebrity.
With his divine power recovering faster, Mo Bai’s spiritual form gradually
became more stable.
The most direct change was that the crucian carp in the wishing well was also
growing longer and becoming more and more human-like in its behavior.
Mo Xiangtian, who had just returned from the trading planet, felt like his eyes
were playing tricks on him.
“Baby, is that crucian carp’s tail turning red?”
Mo Bai lied with a straight face. “Is it? I hadn’t noticed.”
But Mo Xiangtian hadn’t come to see Mo Bai today just to look at the fish. He
had something more important.
When he was signing the inheritance agreement on the trading planet, the more he
thought about it, the more he felt the whole thing was very mysterious.
Yet the assets on the trading planet were truly enormous. So enormous that even
he himself felt undeserving.
To test whether it was really that mysterious—whether making a wish would
actually make it come true—Mo Xiangtian, as soon as he returned to the
sanatorium planet, came straight to see his precious son, dust and all.
He decided to try again.
Mo Xiangtian’s voice was gentle. “Baby, let’s play that game from last time
again.”
“Game?” Mo Bai was confused. “Did we play a game?”
Mo Xiangtian said, “You know, that wishing make-believe game. Did baby forget?”
Mo Bai: “…”
I expended divine power to send you good fortune, and you call that a
make-believe game?
Mo Bai climbed out of the pool, his little body turning resolutely to leave,
giving Mo Daddy a firm… dripping wet back view.
Mo Xiangtian: “??”
Mo Xiangtian hurried after him. “Baby, are you upset?”
Why was he suddenly upset?
Then it hit Mo Xiangtian like a bolt of inspiration.
According to the internet, children were very literal.
Just like back on ancient Earth, when all children truly believed that Ultraman
existed.
Saying now that it was just make-believe would be destroying his son’s
worldview!
Mo Xiangtian quickly tried to make amends. “I was wrong. We’re not playing a
game. Daddy apologizes to baby! Actually, Daddy has something very important to
ask the Wish-Granting God for.”
Mo Bai said, “No make-believe.”
Mo Xiangtian cleared his throat. “How could it be make-believe? Daddy even did
some research and found some ancient Earth customs. Then I had someone
custom-make these things called an incense burner and incense candles. Baby must
have never seen these before, right?”
Mo Bai stopped dead in his tracks and turned around.
Sure enough, Mo Xiangtian was holding a bundle of incense candles and an incense
burner.
Never having expected to see such things in the interstellar era, Mo Bai’s mouth
began to water.
It had been a long time since he’d had incense.
Mo Bai said very seriously, “Playing together isn’t out of the question.”
What else could he do with his own father? He just had to spoil him a little.
It definitely wasn’t that he wanted to eat the incense.
Seeing that his son was appeased, Mo Xiangtian breathed a quiet sigh of relief
and immediately pulled his son along to play the Wish-Granting God game.
But this time, he hadn’t actually decided what to wish for.
He already had money.
The company’s troubles were resolved.
His son’s health was improving.
What wish to make?
Mo Xiangtian lit the incense and candles, pondering this question.
In the end, he made a secret wish: “I hope that for the next three days, my wife
won’t scold me and will still let me sleep in the bed.”
He made the wish silently in his heart, after all, his child was right there. Mo
Xiangtian had to maintain some parental dignity.
After making the wish, he didn’t forget to add silently: I hope the baby stays
healthy and safe.
Mo Xiangtian thought no one would know what he wished for. But just as he
inserted the incense into the burner and looked up, he saw his own little brat
staring at him with a strange expression.
Mo Xiangtian felt a little guilty. “What’s wrong?”
The baby hadn’t heard what he said, right?
Mo Bai said, “Nothing.”
Most people made wishes for wealth or love.
But him? He asked for three days without getting scolded.
But as he’d thought before, he could only spoil his own father.
Mo Bai patted his hand, sending the good fortune over, and took a long-inhaled
whiff of the incense, satisfied. “Your wish will come true.”
Mo Xiangtian mumbled an acknowledgment, half hoping it would come true and half
hoping it wouldn’t.
If it came true, that would be good. But if it actually came true… that would be
just…
Mo Xiangtian’s feelings grew complicated as well.
Not long after, Mrs. Mo, Li Ruo, returned home.
As soon as Mrs. Mo walked in, she saw father and son both lying on the floor, an
incense burner in front of them, doing something sneaky. She immediately
furrowed her delicate brows.
“Mo Xiangtian!”
Mo Xiangtian’s hair stood on end. He quickly pulled his son up from the floor.
Here it comes, here it comes. His wife was going to start scolding him again.
And he would complain about something like, ‘I told you to watch the child, and
this is how you watch him?’
Mo Xiangtian dropped his head, waiting for his wife’s scolding.
But after waiting a while, he saw Mrs. Mo take a deep breath. Somehow, she held
back her anger and said, “Go wash Baibai. His pants are dirty.”
Mo Xiangtian: “???”
Mrs. Mo: “And what’s that thing on the floor? It’s filling the whole house with
that smell. Take it outside.”
Mo Xiangtian: “!!!”
Really no scolding?
Mo Xiangtian dazedly picked up his son to wash his hands, his expression one of
lingering shock.
Was it really… that miraculous?
Mrs. Mo had no idea what Mo Xiangtian was thinking.
Big men were all like this. They couldn’t manage the household properly. If you
told him to watch the child, you’d still find him playing in the mud with the
kid.
She had originally planned to scold Mo Xiangtian, but thinking that he had just
returned from the trading planet and the spaceship ride must have been tiring,
she held back.
Mo Xiangtian absentmindedly washed Mo Bai’s hands clean and put Mo Bai down on
the floor, still thinking about the Wish-Granting God.
He looked down and saw Mo Bai walking unsteadily, his chubby little legs
tripping over each other, nearly falling flat.
Mo Xiangtian quickly snapped back to attention. “Baby, what’s wrong?”
Mo Bai felt dizzy, his delicate little face flushed. “You…”
Mo Bai took a deep breath. He felt like Mo Xiangtian in front of him had
multiplied into four. He shook his head, asking incredulously, “Why is there…
alcohol in your incense?”
Mo Xiangtian almost thought something was wrong with the incense. He quickly
explained, “When I ordered it, the person said they don’t have the materials
recorded from the ancient Earth period. They said they made it according to
incense style. They also asked Daddy what scent he liked. Daddy likes alcohol…”
Mo Bai: “…”
So you put alcohol in the incense?
Alcohol-filled incense?
Mo Bai really wanted to complain, but having inhaled all the incense in one go,
he had to admit one fact.
Having not had incense in so long, he was drunk.
His little body swayed and fell backward into Mo Xiangtian’s arms.
Mo Xiangtian rushed out of the room, carrying his son. “Honey! Honey!”
Mrs. Mo: “What’s wrong? What happened to Baibai?”
Mo Xiangtian felt guilty. ‘You probably won’t believe me, but the baby seems to
have inhaled too much incense smoke and got drunk.’
Mo Xiangtian hung his head, waiting to be scolded.
But even at a time like this, Mrs. Mo still didn’t scold him. Instead, she took
Mo Bai and started calling the doctor as she walked.
Mo Xiangtian: “…”
Mo Xiangtian stood there dazed. So… it really was that effective?
The family doctor arrived quickly, bringing a small medical pod. He examined the
little brat from head to toe and finally confirmed, “It’s nothing. He’s just
asleep. His body is much healthier than before.”
The couple finally felt relieved.
Neither of them knew that at that moment, an ancient-robed young man was hanging
from the chandelier.
In his spiritual form, Mo Bai hung upside down from the chandelier, looking
melancholy.
This must be what they meant by being so drunk your soul leaves your body.
Watching his parents tuck him in with his little blanket, Mo Bai swung like a
pendulum for a bit, then started to get bored.
No one could see him in this state… Wait, there was one person who could see
him.
Wen Zhaoyan.
Mo Bai floated down from the ceiling and drifted straight to the neighboring
estate.
He entered the estate without any obstruction. It was his first time going
inside. There were more guards inside the estate than he had imagined.
But still, not a single person noticed him.
Wen Zhaoyan was in the living room. Kai was video calling him.
In the past, Kai’s little mermaid Xixi had always been very resistant to coming
to Wen Zhaoyan’s place.
But for some reason, after going home this time, Xixi had actually taken the
initiative to ask to come here.
Kai was telling him about this.
Wen Zhaoyan was about to say it was probably because Xixi liked playing with the
little brat next door, but before he could get the words out, he saw an
ancient-robed young man float in.
Wen Zhaoyan paused, then said to Kai on the call, “Something came up. I’ll call
you back.”
Without waiting for Kai’s reply, he ended the call.
Mo Bai asked, “Am I interrupting?”
Wen Zhaoyan said, “No.”
The butler happened to be passing through the living room. Hearing this, he
asked, “Your Highness? No, what? Is Your Highness looking for something he can’t
find?”
Wen Zhaoyan’s tone was indifferent. “Nothing. You may go.”
Curious as he was, the butler obeyed and left.
After the butler was gone, Wen Zhaoyan said, “Please, have a seat.”
Mo Bai floated over and sat on the sofa. “Aren’t you afraid of me?”
Wen Zhaoyan asked in return, “Why should I be afraid?”
Mo Bai said matter-of-factly, “Because you’re the only one who can see me.”
Wen Zhaoyan asked again, “Why am I the only one who can see you?”
Mo Bai thought for a moment and said, “Maybe because we’re fated.”
Wen Zhaoyan was silent for a moment, then looked away and began to brew tea.
He poured a cup for himself, then one for Mo Bai, and said, “I still don’t know
your name.”
Of course, at a time like this, he couldn’t very well say that he had already
investigated the young man.
Mo Bai certainly wouldn’t give his real name.
He and little Mo Bai looked so alike. If he used the same name, it would
practically force people’s imaginations into overdrive.
“My surname is Mo,” Mo Bai said. “Mo Li.”
Mo from Mo Xiangtian, Li from Li Ruo, Mrs. Mo’s maiden name.
Wen Zhaoyan wasn’t at all surprised that he would use a fake name.
Since the young man was Mrs. Mo’s own younger brother, Li Chaoci, it was easy to
understand why he would use the Mo couple’s surnames as a pseudonym.
Wen Zhaoyan also pretended not to know his real name and said, “A lot of people
on the interstellar network are looking for you.”
Mo Bai already knew that the Mermaid Association had announced he was a mermaid.
And a hacker had leaked information that he was on the sanatorium planet.
That was why he hadn’t been online for the past couple of days.
But he wasn’t worried. His appearance on the interstellar network was completely
different from his appearance in real life. No one should suspect that Mo Bai
was him.
“Don’t worry,” Mo Bai said with a yawn. “They won’t find me.”
Wen Zhaoyan knew the young man had his ways, so he didn’t bring it up again.
“As for you,” Mo Bai said, “your mental condition is very bad. Even The Great
Compassion Mantra probably can’t soothe you.”
Wen Zhaoyan’s hand tightened slightly around his teacup as he looked at the
young man.
Mo Bai thought to himself, Wen Zhaoyan likes my little uncle. He’s good-looking,
he comes from a good family. It would be far too easy for him to pursue someone.
If my little uncle really ends up with him, they’ll be family in the future.
He pulled out a coin—the very one Wen Zhaoyan had tossed before.
Mo Bai gently placed the coin in his hand and said softly, “We’re all family
now. I’ll grant you one more wish.”
His lips curved into a smile, his eyes and brows arching beautifully like a
painting, his small dimples tugging at the heart.
Though his figure was ethereal, invisible to anyone but Wen Zhaoyan, like a
ghost, the coin he placed in his palm carried a faint warmth.
Wen Zhaoyan pressed his lips together, slowly closed his hand, and held the
coin.
“Alright,” Wen Zhaoyan said. “Thank you.”
Outside the living room.
The Crown Prince’s guards stared at the surveillance footage, their expressions
grave.
They urgently called the butler over and lowered their voices. “His Highness the
Crown Prince’s condition… might be getting worse.”
Hearing this, the butler immediately panicked. “What’s going on? Did something
happen?”
The guards pointed to the living room surveillance. In the footage, Wen Zhaoyan
was alone in the living room.
He poured tea for thin air and spoke to thin air…
The guards’ expressions were solemn. “We suspect that His Highness’s
consciousness sea has deteriorated to the point of hallucinations. Or else… a
split personality.”
