A Failed Test and a Dangerous Guess

Chapter 16984 words9 min read

“Your Excellency, Yingxue is injured.

We rushed back to treat him.”

Yan Yi hurried a few small steps toward the great villain and explained cautiously.

Wen Xiaoran glanced at Bu Yingxue’s arm, where barely a patch of unscathed flesh remained.

He only felt that Yan Yi was overestimating herself.

Demonic energy invading the body—how could a mere mortal physician possibly treat that?

With this thought, he turned to Bu Yingyue.

“Call your father.”

Having said that, he led the Demon Domain guards away, disappearing in an instant.

Yan Yi touched the tip of her nose awkwardly.

“Is His Excellency… looking down on mortal medical skills?”

She returned to Bu Yingxue’s side, intending to support him.

Bu Yingyue quickly stepped forward with a smile.

“Xiao Yi, let me.”

She gently nudged Yan Yi ahead.

“You lead the way.”

Seeing Yan Yi’s dejected expression, Bu Yingyue kindly explained,

“His Excellency does not look down on you.

Low-ranking demons invaded by unknown demonic energy are poisoned throughout their bodies.

Ordinary medicine cannot treat bites from them.”

Yan Yi heard her words clearly, yet she did not revise her opinion of Wen Xiaoran.

After all, the great villain’s disdain for mortals was nothing new.

Back in Yan Yi’s courtyard, Bu Yingxue had already fallen half unconscious.

Bu Yingyue settled him in a chair and sent word to Bu Shu.

Unable to treat him with her own skills, Yan Yi felt deeply frustrated.

She could only administer medicine to temporarily suppress the spreading poison.

“Xiao Yi, what was that powder you threw in Tanzhou City?” Bu Yingyue asked casually while tearing away the ruined sleeve from her brother’s arm.

“An anti-pervert weapon,” Yan Yi blurted out instinctively.

“Unfortunately, it’s useless against demons.

If he were an ordinary mortal, he’d be crying and sneezing from the spiciness.”

Bu Yingyue blinked.

“Anti-pervert… weapon?”

Yan Yi looked up from her medicine box and studied her carefully.

“It’s a self-made powder used to defend against molesters.

In my hometown, it’s quite common.

Sprinkle it on someone with ill intentions, and their combat ability drops to nearly zero.”

She deliberately emphasized the phrase, testing a lingering suspicion in her heart.

“It sounds impressive.”

Bu Yingyue praised sincerely.

“You are braver than I imagined.”

Yan Yi smiled faintly and lowered her head again.

When she mentioned the unfamiliar term, Bu Yingyue showed no discomfort, no headache, no sudden memory lapse.

Previously, when she had mentioned a “locator” before Wen Xiaoran, his headache had flared and the word seemed erased from his memory.

Her suspicion deepened.

Could the restriction apply only to the transmigrator’s mission target?

She resolved to test it on the great villain himself.

“Still shaken?” Bu Yingyue waved a hand before her eyes.

Yan Yi returned to her senses.

“I’m fine now.

But I was truly frightened.”

Bu Yingyue relaxed and added,

“My mother and you actually share some fate.

She was once an ordinary mortal too.”

Yan Yi politely refrained from prying into the word “once.”

“I hope to meet her someday.”

Bu Yingyue burst into laughter.

“When you meet her, you won’t dare call her ‘elder.’”

Yan Yi blinked in confusion.

“Why?”

“You’ll see when the time comes.”

Not long after, Bu Shu arrived and began treatment, dismissing the two girls from the room.

At dusk, the courtyard grew quiet.

Suddenly, a dense black mist appeared and coalesced into Wen Xiaoran’s tall figure.

“How is Yingxue?” he asked.

“Master and the others are still inside,” Yan Yi answered honestly.

The door creaked open soon after.

Bu Yingxue stepped out, arm wrapped thickly in bandages, his face pale.

“I’m fine, Sister,” he reassured weakly.

Bu Yingyue frowned.

“This is hardly ‘fine.’”

She bade farewell and led him home, calling after her father to follow.

Soon, only Yan Yi and Wen Xiaoran remained in the dim courtyard.

Unaware of the subtle shift in atmosphere, Yan Yi slowly approached him.

“Your Excellency, has the demonic energy in Tanzhou been cleared?”

He lowered his gaze and gave a quiet hum of affirmation.

Earlier, when he had seen Bu Yingxue carrying her, an inexplicable discomfort had stirred within him.

Yet when she released Bu Yingxue and instinctively moved closer to him instead, that discomfort had oddly eased.

“Your Excellency…” she ventured, unable to contain her curiosity.

“Did the demonic energy travel from Xiangyun Town?”

His eyes sharpened with interest.

“Why do you think so?”

“Tanzhou is far from Taihu, with Xiangyun in between.

That seems the only explanation.”

He nodded faintly.

Encouraged, she continued animatedly describing the earlier incident by the river.

Wen Xiaoran listened with rare patience.

“Yingyue mentioned you brought a weapon?”

Yan Yi hesitated.

Such a trivial matter did not need to be reported so faithfully.

Still, since he had asked, she seized the chance to test her theory.

“Yes.

I brought my self-made anti-pervert weapon.

It has no effect on demons.”

“Anti-pervert… weapon?”

He looked puzzled.

She smiled inwardly.

“If you had heard of it, I’d begin doubting your identity.”

“It’s a fragrant powder mixed with pungent spices, used against harassers.”

He seemed half to understand but did not question further.

Yan Yi watched his face carefully, expecting a sudden headache or blank expression.

Nothing happened.

He merely shifted from indifference to mild confusion—

And finally to a look of understanding.

In his eyes, she appeared to be a frightened mortal rambling nonsense.

The test had failed.

Her bold guess began to form.

Perhaps only when a character harmed the transmigrator would they suffer punishment and forced amnesia.

She recalled the time she had touched his tongue, causing the old-fashioned villain to flush and flee.

If she kissed him—

He would surely react violently.

Perhaps even trigger that headache again.

Acting on impulse, she stepped closer and grabbed his collar tightly.

“Your Excellency—”
