“First, take his temperature.” Wang Jian instructed the junior nurse to halt the injection. “Change the medication, continue the IV drip. I’ll stay tonight to observe Lin Yu’s condition.
The two junior nurses split up to attend to their tasks.
On the other end of the line, Song Liping, hearing the sounds from their side, inquired, “Do you still need me? Or should I let you tend to things first? Perhaps I should come over?”
“Mom, it’s fine now. Hang up,” Jiang Yan said, signaling Wang Jian to end the call.
“Don’t worry, Auntie. Goodbye,” Wang Jian said, before ending the call and tucking the phone into his pocket.
The junior nurse brought over the digital thermometer and showed him the reading.
“Tsk, 41 degrees. He’s completely delirious from the fever,” Wang Jian muttered, a frown creasing his brow. “Start physical cooling measures immediately. Quickly!”
“Oh, right,” the junior nurse replied, hastily gathering the necessary supplies.
Jiang Yan knelt on the hospital bed, pulling Lin Yu, who was huddled in the corner, into his embrace. The man remained motionless, his breathing heavy, his entire body rigid with tension.
A worried expression on his face, he turned to Wang Jian. “Lin Yu… it seems he’s fallen asleep.”
“More accurately, he’s probably fainted from the fever.”
Jiang Yan glanced at him. “What do we do?”
“Don’t panic, it’s nothing serious,” Wang Jian reassured Jiang Yan, sensing his distress. “If we control it promptly, it won’t lead to other infections…”
“What I’m asking is, can his psychological burden truly be cured? I’ve seen people who never recover from such things their entire lives.” Jiang Yan’s voice was uncharacteristically low, tinged with despair.
Wang Jian, who had been focused on preparing the medication, paused, a slight jolt of surprise running through him as he heard the profound sadness in Jiang Yan’s voice.
He looked up, his gaze falling upon the blurred silhouettes bathed in the glow of the streetlights outside the window. Jiang Yan held Lin Yu, and in that moment, it seemed as though they were enduring a separation of life and death.
“To be frank with you,” Wang Jian began, “psychological illnesses can never be fully cured. All we can do is try our utmost to help him bravely confront it, or perhaps, forget the past.”
“But it’s incredibly difficult, isn’t it?” Jiang Yan’s heart ached, gripped by Lin Yu’s pain. Although he didn’t know the full extent of what Lin Yu had endured, the child’s behavior these past few days spoke volumes about the immense trauma he had suffered.
“He’s only twenty-one…” Jiang Yan found himself unable to suppress his profound sorrow.
“Jiang Yan, I never imagined you’d fall so deeply into an emotional attachment this quickly,” Wang Jian remarked. “You’ve always been so rational. I truly thought you’d choose someone you liked as if you were solving a mathematical formula, meticulously applying each desired condition to a person.” Having finished preparing Lin Yu’s medication, he instructed the doctor to replace the IV drip with a brand new, sterilized tube.
He was surprised by Jiang Yan, a man who typically disliked intimate interactions with others, holding Lin Yu with such natural ease.
They embraced as if they were lovers reunited after a long, arduous separation, leaning into each other’s solace.
“Don’t worry, I’m a miracle doctor! My medicine will cure all ailments!” he declared, attempting to ease Jiang Yan’s troubled mind.
“I truly… my heart is in utter disarray.” The person in Jiang Yan’s arms was burning hot, and their fever seemed to ignite a tumultuous storm within his own heart.
“If murder weren’t illegal, I’d genuinely want to chop Cai Xinyu into a thousand pieces.”
“Me too,” Wang Jian agreed, his sympathy for Lin Yu evident. Judging by his condition, the child must have truly endured an unbearable amount.
“Tell me, why would one person develop such an inexplicable, irresistible, and profound desire to protect another?”
“Just admit it, you’re experiencing love at first sight,” Wang Jian declared unequivocally.
“Is that so? Perhaps…” Jiang Yan remained hesitant, uncertain. If his feelings were merely pity, pursuing Lin Yu impulsively would be irresponsible towards their emotions.
“Give me your phone. I need to post something on Weibo.”
“Don’t be impulsive, Great Film Emperor. If you announce a relationship, Weibo will crash,” Wang Jian warned, covering his pocket to prevent Jiang Yan from taking his phone.
Having known him for five years, Wang Jian felt he had a good grasp of Jiang Yan’s character.
Because he possessed immense wealth, Jiang Yan regarded money as mere dirt. He acted out of passion, not for fame or fortune, and even after becoming a Film Emperor with a massive fanbase, he never bothered with deliberate public relations. His Weibo feed was as mundane and straightforward as that of an old man next door; he simply said whatever was on his mind.
For instance, if he found someone displeasing, he wouldn’t care about their fans in the slightest; he’d just write about it directly.
His public relations team was so adept that they could even prevent fan wars between two opposing groups, and everyone acknowledged their absolutely formidable ability to control public opinion.
Furthermore, the individuals he publicly named were always those who had committed misdeeds yet were shamelessly spun by their companies into the image of wronged parties.
If Jiang Yan found something intolerable, he would voice his opinion directly.
He had once promised his fans that he was currently single, and if he ever entered a relationship, he would announce it on Weibo immediately.
Wang Jian was actually concerned that Jiang Yan’s feelings for Lin Yu might be more rooted in pity, and such matters shouldn’t be acted upon impulsively.
“My mistake, you’re not in love at first sight after all. You really need to re-evaluate your feelings,” Wang Jian said, handing him a glass of water. “Lay him down flat. People with high fevers often have difficulty breathing, and it’s not good for him to be curled up in your arms like that.”
Jiang Yan drank the water, then gently laid Lin Yu flat and pulled the blankets up to cover him. While Wang Jian was momentarily distracted, he stealthily pulled out a phone—only to realize it wasn’t his.
He looked at Wang Jian’s phone, and without a second thought, tapped open Weibo. He then composed a message: [I am Jiang Yan. I think I’ve fallen for someone.]
After sending it, he met Wang Jian’s helpless gaze before returning the phone to him.
Fans were well aware of the close relationship between Jiang Yan and Wang Jian. In fact, because of Jiang Yan, Wang Jian’s family hospital had become a popular check-in spot for various influencers and fans.
“So responsible to his fans, even posting on Weibo just because he *thinks* he likes someone,” Wang Jian mused aloud.
“Of course, I have to be responsible. Too many people are pursuing me. It’s better for everyone if they give up hope sooner,” Jiang Yan said, rubbing his stomach. “I’m hungry.”
“You can still crack jokes? I shouldn’t have worried about you at all,” Wang Jian said, pulling out his phone and opening a food delivery app. “I’ll order you some abalone sauce rice.”
“No need. A few biscuits or something will do. Do you have any in your office?”
“Of course, I do,” Wang Jian affirmed. He then made a call, asking the on-duty doctor to bring some biscuits over.
Jiang Yan typically didn’t check Weibo after making a post; his DMs would inevitably explode, and the comments section would erupt. Media outlets, eager to capitalize on the buzz, would aggressively re-share and report, eager to gain traction.
He was accustomed to it all.
Around ten o’clock that night, precisely when most people were online, Wang Jian’s Weibo post quickly shot to the top of the trending topics.
A cacophony of reactions ensued.
[I know Wang Jian; he’s got a silver tongue and rarely speaks the truth. Maybe he just posted this to stir up Jiang Yan’s fans and see our reaction.]
[Exactly! Otherwise, why wouldn’t our Jiang Jiang post on his own Weibo account?]
[Jiang Jiang is mine! He can’t like anyone else!]
[Are those two rehearsing lines again? I heard Jiang Jiang took on a new film set in the Republican era, so Wang Jian must be playing an extra, right?]
[Yeah, let’s just drop it, everyone.]
No one truly believed Jiang Yan would suddenly fall in love.
However, amidst the uniformly dismissive replies, one particular comment stood out, glaringly conspicuous.
[Heh… The person Jiang Yan likes is named LY. He forcibly stole someone else’s boyfriend and even used his PR team to silence the legitimate boyfriend from speaking out online.]
[Holy hell?!]
This comment quickly caused an uproar, with thousands of replies pouring in within minutes.
Jiang Yan’s phone rang; it was his public relations team.
“Mr. Jiang,” the team member began, reporting on the comment. “The IP address has been cracked, the residential address has been cracked, and the ID number and phone number have all been identified. They belong to Cai Xinyu.”
“Good. You can start controlling the comments now. Make sure not a single trace of this incident remains on the internet.”
Jiang Yan’s lips curved into a smirk as he looked at the unconscious Lin Yu. “Wait for me to get your revenge.”
“Holy hell! Holy hell!” Wang Jian was truly taken aback by Jiang Yan’s ruthless cunning.
“You can’t go around killing people! Calm down! It’s not worth it!” Wang Jian grabbed Jiang Yan nervously.
“Have I been acting too much? How could I possibly kill someone?” Jiang Yan told him to calm down. “I originally didn’t intend to find Cai Xinyu this way. For me, finding someone is too simple.”
“Then what’s your plan?”
“Actually, I mainly wanted to see the fan feedback. Honestly, too many fans are pursuing me, and it causes problems. Many even track me down. I’ve encountered fans who forcibly pulled down my pants and demanded to ‘give birth to monkeys’ for me on the spot; it’s a bit terrifying.”
“Pfft!” Wang Jian burst out laughing.
“If I had a partner, it would make them all give up hope,” Jiang Yan stated. “It’s definite that Cai Xinyu harbors resentment towards me, but my team has already contacted various software companies to restrict Cai Xinyu’s accounts. He’s been bottling it up for so long, so today, upon realizing he could reply, he was bound to comment.”
“But…” Wang Jian hesitated, unsure how to voice his concerns.
“I know what you mean. Indeed, Cai Xinyu and Lin Yu were, by all accounts, in a relationship. But you can also see that Lin Yu detests Cai Xinyu; he definitely wanted to break up, but Cai Xinyu refused to let go. So, that relationship isn’t entirely valid. As for me, meddling in their affairs means I have a moral issue. Yet, from Lin Yu’s perspective, he needs me. Therefore, I need to consider Lin Yu, not Cai Xinyu, who is abusive.”
“Hmm…” Wang Jian nodded. “If this matter were to be exposed… public opinion wouldn’t necessarily side with Lin Yu. You are, after all, a public figure, and you represent the Jiang family…”
“Whoever has the ability to expose it, let them try,” Jiang Yan retorted. “The rules of this world are never fair; they’re about means and background.”
How realistic. Wang Jian had to admit it.
“I am going to take care of Lin Yu. I only consider things from Lin Yu’s perspective; anything else is none of my business.” Jiang Yan’s stance was resolute. “Born into a family of merchants steeped in deceit and intrigue, I knew at the age of three that kindness was useless, and fairness was a pipe dream! To stand at the pinnacle, above all others, one sometimes has to adopt a certain viewpoint and use any means necessary! Profit and right or wrong have no eternal formula; it merely depends on your personal needs and power.”
“Hiss…” Wang Jian dared not utter another word now.
He had never seen Jiang Yan with such an unnervingly powerful aura.
Jiang Yan was born with a kingly presence; he usually appeared gentle, but when truly provoked, he was undeniably a formidable man.
“May I ask what you intend to do with Cai Xinyu?” Wang Jian still felt uneasy about Jiang Yan. He now looked like an enraged lion, fiercely protective of its cub, his eyes solely focused on the restless Lin Yu. That look of tenderness was far from innocent.
“Retrieve Lin Yu’s phone.” What Jiang Yan truly intended to retrieve was Lin Yu’s dignity, and to prove to the child that as long as he was there, there was nothing to fear.
“Ah? Is it that simple?” Wang Jian didn’t believe it.
“And make him wet his pants along the way.” The ruthlessness in Jiang Yan’s eyes intensified, starkly sharp under the cold moonlight.
“Ah, well, can I come along?” Wang Jian rubbed his hands together excitedly.
“No problem.”
“When do we go?” How thrilling, how exciting! Excitement shone from Wang Jian’s eyebrows.
“Now.”
Wang Jian was surprised. “Huh? Then who will look after Lin Yu?”
“Can no one else in your hospital treat Lin Yu besides you?”
Wang Jian: “…”
He immediately stripped off his white coat and whispered, “Let’s go, little bro!”
At half past ten in the dead of night, two men drove from the west side of the city towards the south.
Along the way, identical black vehicles converged from different roads, their drivers burly and formidable, wearing sunglasses, exuding an intimidating aura.
They followed Jiang Yan’s car in an orderly fashion.
Wang Jian pointed at the rearview mirror, a little unnerved. With over a dozen cars following them, who wouldn’t be a little apprehensive?
“Jiang, what’s going on here?”
Jiang Yan replied calmly, “It’s the situation where Cai Xinyu wets his pants.”
“Huh?” Were all these people Jiang Yan’s?
“The Jiang Corporation’s bodyguard team,” Jiang Yan raised an eyebrow. “Quite an impressive display, wouldn’t you say?”
“Oh my god!” Wang Jian was frightened. “Going to find someone with such a huge commotion in the middle of the night, won’t it alert the police?”
“Don’t worry, my PR team has already ‘invited’ Cai Xinyu out in my name. He should be on his way to a bar I own.”
Jiang Yan emphasized the word ‘invited,’ and Wang Jian, not being foolish, understood its true meaning.
“Hiss! Brilliant! I need to re-evaluate my five years of knowing you! You’re terrifying!” Wang Jian genuinely felt that this version of Jiang Yan was a complete stranger, like a desperate gang leader, which sent shivers down his spine. He had always thought Jiang Yan was a rich, handsome, and naive sweetheart!
