Milady clutched his head, squatting on the ground and grimacing in pain.
Looking at the screen, Eve felt not a single ripple of emotion in her heart.
To hold the position of Headmaster of Planden, Milady was certainly not as simple as he appeared—a white-haired old man who liked to play games.
If one were to underestimate him based solely on his appearance, they would be the ones to suffer.
“That brat is still as rude as ever. She used to burn down my office, and now she’s using Other Shore to whack me on the head.”
Hearing this, Cecia couldn’t help but turn her head away, pretending she heard nothing.
She had also been a part of burning down the office back then; it was the Queen who had taken the fall for them in the end.
Since Other Shore could transmit sound to the Queen’s ears, it meant this visit to Milady wasn’t particularly dangerous.
Cecia wasn’t very confident about fighting this headmaster, so she could now relax.
“Headmaster Milady, can we have a proper talk now about why you took part in the raid without permission?”
To prevent Milady’s complaints from reaching her mother’s ears through Other Shore again, and also for the sake of Milady’s fragile skull, Eve brought the conversation back to her purpose for coming here today.
“I already told you, it was because of the new game released by the Human Federation. I had to get a few of the latest editions.”
Eve raised an eyebrow, looking as if she was about to summon Other Shore again.
“Ahem, of course, there was also some official business. Something was stolen from the academy.”
“I followed the trail left behind all the way to the outskirts of the Northern Border Defense City, where I saw a raiding party, so I conveniently hid myself among them.”
Milady coughed a few times before correcting his statement.
Hearing that something had been stolen from Planden, Eve recalled Winnie’s report and asked probingly, “Puppet magic?”
A flash of surprise crossed Milady’s eyes, then he continued, “Indeed, it was the original text recording the puppet magic that was stolen. It seems the princess has her own channels of information.”
“So? Was finding the puppet magic the reason you participated in the raid on the Northern Border Defense City?”
Eve persisted, pressing the question.
“No, no, no, I did not participate in the raid. I was merely passing by the Northern Border Defense City while tracking the puppet magic, and I happened to pick up some game discs that had fallen on the ground. I wanted to return them to their owner, but after waiting for a long time, no one came looking for me, so I had no choice but to reluctantly take them in.”
Milady waved his hands in denial, correcting Eve’s words, and opened a magic recording in front of her.
In the image, Milady was walking down a street in the Northern Border Defense City.
A nearby shop exploded, sending several boxes of game discs flying out, which then landed in front of him.
Not a single human, let alone a vampire, appeared near Milady.
“Your Highness, you see, magic recordings can’t be faked. You can’t just slander an innocent person’s reputation out of thin air. I have evidence! I didn’t even encounter a single human.”
Eve’s face grew a few degrees hotter.
Only now did she understand why her mother would so mercilessly call him a “stinky old coot.”
If she had her mother’s power, she too would want to try smacking his head with Other Shore.
“Fine, let’s put that aside for now. What about the missing Earl? If you want to talk evidence, I have a witness here who saw him leave with you.”
As Eve spoke, Cecia took a step forward from behind her.
The day Cecia had come to greet Eve, she had happened to cross paths with the two of them briefly.
She might not have known Milady’s identity at the time, but subsequent investigation led her directly to him.
“Sigh, do you want to see him?”
As one of the main figures who launched the raid, the Earl would surely know who the mastermind was.
Although she didn’t know what Milady meant, Eve nodded.
“Very well.”
Receiving Eve’s consent, Milady snapped his fingers.
A light flashed behind them.
Cecia tensed, on guard against her surroundings.
She hadn’t detected any trace of a magic formation when they entered the room, yet Milady had silently set up a transportation circle.
To be able to deceive Cecia, who possessed a Domain, Milady’s power was perhaps the closest to the Queen’s among all vampires.
In the blink of an eye, they arrived in a place where one couldn’t see their hand in front of their face.
They regained their vision only when torches embedded in the walls ignited.
“This is a place several thousand meters from Planden. Dozens of magic formations have been set up above to isolate any aura.”
Milady’s voice came from behind them.
Eve calmly turned to face him, waiting for him to continue.
“The Earl you wish to see is right here.”
Milady pointed with his hand, and Eve looked in the direction he indicated.
Five chains, each requiring a full-grown adult to wrap their arms around, hung from the walls.
Something was trapped in the cage, and the massive chains were used to bind it.
The cage was underground, and the materials used to construct it seemed to have been sourced locally, but the magic layered upon it was anything but simple.
Eve saw a familiar figure in the cage—a monster covered in black scales.
It was the form Fol and Tate had taken before, only this monster was much larger than the ones they had become.
‘Has the last Earl now also met the same fate?’
Eve bit her lip tightly.
She had originally thought she might find some clue from the last Earl.
“Leng, a vampire who had just attained the rank of Earl, underwent an unknown transformation. While escorting me away, he devoured all the guards who were with me.”
Roar!
Leng’s roar interrupted Milady’s explanation.
The sudden light underground had stimulated the nerves in its eyes.
The magic formation enchanting the chains flickered, forcibly suppressing its rampage.
Milady activated the formation to cut off its voice as well.
“It emits an influence that attempts to assimilate those around it, whether as followers or as food.”
As someone who had experienced it firsthand, Eve nodded in agreement.
Even with the Soul Vessel sealing her hearing, she had still been affected by this assimilation.
“I call this assimilation ‘corruption.’ It erodes the soul. Whether human or vampire, any creature possessing intelligence is its target.”
“And the corrupted creatures either merge with this monster or become puppet-like followers, crying out to a god.”
Cecia interjected, “A god? Are there really gods? If gods truly exist, why would our vampire god have left us in a barren land for so many years?”
Hearing Cecia’s words, Eve also became curious about the topic and wanted to hear Milady’s explanation.
“Regrettably, according to the mythological records in the Planden library and our exploration of the ruins after returning to this plane, there really was a god who created the vampires.”
Hearing Milady’s words, Eve’s eyes narrowed.
Things were gradually exceeding her expectations.
