What Nonsense Are You Spouting

Chapter 17 • 1,194 words • 10 min read

Whether in games or novels, it’s a fact that in any work, as time passes and the players or plot progresses, the beings or monsters they face will inevitably become stronger with each iteration and the growth of the protagonist.

This kind of thing is indeed reasonable and logical, but for the characters within the game or novel’s world, it’s a real pain in the ass.

The reason is simple: except for the protagonist’s party and the players who level up like they’re on cheats, who the hell among the world’s natives can keep up with the leveling speed of these monsters!

But now that she had transmigrated as a mid-game boss, Vivian had no choice but to obediently return to her territory and focus on surviving.

After leaving the outpost, Vivian took Luna and rushed toward the border.

While at the outpost, she had also snagged a map, so she now had a rough understanding of the situation on the front lines.

Currently, the demon and human armies were engaged in a fierce battle along the border, with small demon squads harassing everywhere, clashing with adventurers.

As for the larger battlefields, they were the front lines where the regular human armies and clergy clashed with the main demon forces.

Along the way, Vivian and Luna encountered quite a few patrolling adventurer parties, but the level difference was simply too great, and they were completely unable to detect Vivian’s presence.

“Lady Demon Lord, is it really okay to just let these humans go?”

Watching another adventurer party leave, a look of displeasure appeared on Luna’s face.

She couldn’t help but pout and ask Vivian in a slightly coquettish tone.

“They’re a bunch of ants. What’s the point of killing them? The smell of blood would only attract truly powerful hunters.”

It wasn’t that Vivian didn’t understand Luna’s thoughts, but for the time being, she really didn’t want to kill the innocent wantonly.

Besides, it was a case of soldiers against soldiers, generals against generals.

Bullying the weak too much would bring retribution.

Shouldn’t she at least accumulate some good karma for the child in her belly?

So she chose to let most of the adventurers and soldiers she encountered go, using her mana to hide her and Luna’s figures and presence.

And although Luna stared at the readily available kills with gritted teeth, she reluctantly held back under Vivian’s gaze.

…It was truly hard to imagine this teary-eyed, timid-looking Luna reaping heads.

But speaking of which, it was really interesting.

The hatred and hostility of the Demon Clan toward mortal races were truly just as the game’s setting described—a situation where they would fight to the death upon meeting.

Vivian pondered this, but soon she noticed a faint smell of decay lingering in the air.

It smelled like rotting leaves, with an old person’s scent.

“Luna, you hide first.”

“Huh? O-okay, Lady Demon Lord!”

After thinking for a moment, Vivian decided to have Luna hide first—the little succubus was startled by her words, and after a hurried reply, she disappeared on the spot with a pop.

This was a succubus’s ultimate life-saving technique, hiding themselves within a spatial rift to evade powerful enemies, which was also one of the reasons succubi fetched such high prices on the human black market.

After all, a succubus’s own combat power on the front lines was quite weak.

The success rate of their mental attacks and bewitchment abilities dropped significantly when the opponent’s mind was taut and vigilant, not to mention when clergy were present.

A succubus’s attacks were only effective when the enemy let their guard down, so in the organization of the regular demon army, succubi were most often not frontline troops, but rather infiltrated enemy lines behind the front along with shadow demons.

And just after Luna disappeared, Vivian continued forward, and after a short while, she passed through the dense forest and saw a small spring.

And by the spring was a familiar golden figure.

Carol was sitting leisurely by the spring, her pair of bare, jade-like feet dipped idly in the water, lifting them to move from time to time.

A gentle breeze caressed her soft golden hair, her emerald eyes gazing at the water’s surface with peace and gentleness—at first glance, she really did look like a beautiful, mature elf lady from a legend, one a traveler might meet for the first time.

…If only Vivian couldn’t smell that old person’s scent on her.

‘Tsk, the old undying hag.’

To be fair, sometimes not being human really came with a lot of regrets.

Take Carol, for example.

If Vivian were still a normal man, she would definitely be utterly captivated by the other’s appearance and temperament—damn it, who doesn’t like a beautiful, busty blonde?

And an elf at that!

But to a demon’s keen senses, it was a completely different matter from how she appeared on the surface.

According to the official lore, Carol’s age was a mystery, but in Vivian’s opinion, this woman was at least an old hag who had lived for several thousand, or even ten thousand years.

That thick, musty old smell and the stench of rotting leaves really made her keep mature elves at a distance.

Not to mention Carol’s true identity was a Grand Necromancer, carrying a stench of death that couldn’t be washed away.

“We meet again, Vivian, Demon Lord of Evernight.”

A few seconds after Vivian appeared before Carol, she finally turned her head and greeted her with a warm smile.

As if they were old friends of a thousand years.

“What do you want? There should be a limit to this relentless pursuit.”

Vivian asked slowly, her face expressionless, while simultaneously gathering her mana, ready to burst into battle at any moment.

“Don’t be nervous.”

Carol said unhurriedly, twirling a lock of her hair, a friendly smile on her face.

“I know that since I failed to catch you on the first day you escaped, I’ve already lost my chance.

You’ve recovered a considerable amount of your mana by now.

It’s impossible to capture you alive again.”

Carol said this, a hint of curiosity in her smiling eyes.

“So I’ve given up on the idea of capturing you alive as research material. How about we make a deal?”

“…?”

Vivian couldn’t help but frown upon hearing Carol’s nonsense.

“I will assist you.”

Carol said slowly, looking at Vivian.

“Your Demon Lord’s Castle has been destroyed by the heroes.

Two months isn’t a long time, but your former subordinates have surely scattered to the winds and pledged allegiance to others, haven’t they?

And you’re pregnant.

Sooner or later, there will come a time when you are extremely weak and vulnerable.”

“As it happens, I know a thing or two about midwifery. How about I help you?”

“What nonsense are you spouting.”

Faced with Carol’s words, the corner of Vivian’s mouth began to twitch halfway through.

By the time the other woman had finished, Vivian let out a cold, angry laugh.

“I haven’t forgotten that just a week ago, you were planning to chop me up and take me away, have you?”
