Chapter 18 : Storm’s New Instructor (2)

“Ay~ Don’t lie. Why would the second son of the Mulick family use a sword?”

“Ah, I’m telling the truth! He’s said to be the top of the new instructors in the swordsmanship department. Honestly, when I first heard the rumor, I thought it was nonsense, but after seeing him today, I completely understand. He’s no ordinary hero.”

“Wait, isn’t Edgar Mulick the hero who was notorious as a troublemaker during our academy days?”

“That’s exactly why it’s even stranger.”

The capital of the Kleppe Kingdom, Tristan.

As the core city where the kingdom’s heroes gather the most, the number of taverns where heroes meet and talk is also huge.

Especially this place, called the ‘Hero’s Tavern,’ which offers premium food and drinks at a high price.

It’s so popular among heroes that there are dozens of branches within the kingdom.

And because heroes gather here, there are countless rumors circulating from their mouths.

“So, that Edgar really awakened the third Crossroad?”

“At least! At least! Honestly, just by watching his movements… It might even have been the fourth Crossroad.”

“Ugh! What do you mean the fourth Crossroad! Then are you saying he’s at the level of Instructor Akina? Say something that makes sense.”

“Agh! I’m telling you, it’s true! How can I prove this?”

And right now.

In a few hero taverns scattered throughout Tristan, a very strange rumor was spreading.

The rumor hadn’t even been around for long.

It started spreading just as numerous heroes—mostly those newly selected as instructors—began arriving in Tristan from the special city of Sachsen.

—A mid-level monster appeared in the Red Bush Zone!

—Edgar hunted all those monsters alone!

—Edgar might have awakened the fourth Crossroad!

Heroes were babbling all sorts of stories.

To sum up their stories briefly, it went something like this.

And then.

“Hmm…?”

In one of the hero taverns located on the outskirts of Tristan.

A regular customer, Toulouan, tilted his head.

He often came here to gather tidbits from the heroes’ stories, but today’s rumor was particularly hard to grasp.

“Owner. Who is this Edgar that keeps coming up in the heroes’ conversations?”

So, he directly asked the tavern owner, with whom he had a close relationship.

The tavern owner widened his eyes and responded.

“You don’t know Edgar Mulick? He used to occasionally appear in the kingdom’s newspapers. The second son of the Mulick family, a hero with no talent for magic… Well, most of the articles were mocking him, though.”

Edgar Mulick.

The second son of the prestigious Marquis family of Mulick, known for their mastery of magic.

As soon as Toulouan heard that full name, he snapped his fingers.

“Ah! Mulick! I remember. But what about that Edgar?”

“Well, according to the heroes who came from Sachsen, that Edgar is apparently a swordsman hero who holds an incredible Crossroad.”

“…What?”

The tavern owner nonchalantly replied while wiping a wine glass.

“Today, a mid-level monster called a Kelleil suddenly appeared in the Red Bush Zone, and they say Edgar Mulick hunted down fifteen of them alone. It’s hard to believe, but there are quite a few heroes who testified the same thing.”

“…!!”

A mid-level monster appeared in the Red Bush Zone.

That alone was a huge incident.

The Red Bush Zone had only ever seen low-level monsters before, and since the source of the monsters’ appearance was still unknown, continuous investigations had been ongoing.

If a mid-level monster like Kelleil appeared there, it would become a danger zone that the kingdom itself would have to step in to handle.

The moment this news was spread, a royal investigation team would have likely been dispatched to the area without delay.

But a hero single-handedly hunted down fifteen of those Kelleil monsters?

And that hero was none other than the second son of the Mulick family, who had been secretly ridiculed as a bastard troublemaker?

‘This is a scoop!’

Toulouan’s eyes lit up.

He had a knack for catching the scent of a scoop, and he instinctively knew that this rumor was not something to be taken lightly.

Hero rumors were often full of exaggerations and embellishments, but with so many witnesses this time, the chances of it being a false rumor were slim.

“I heard he was selected as a new instructor for the swordsmanship department at Tristan Military Academy… huh?”

Creak…

Hearing the sound of someone quickly packing up, the tavern owner paused mid-sentence and looked up.

His conversation partner had already paid for the drinks and was leaving his seat.

“Toulouan! Where are you going?”

“To work!”

Toulouan, an ordinary citizen of the capital, Tristan.

His job was a daily journalist for the Kleppe Kingdom Newspaper.

“It seems like it’s mostly wrapped up.”

Ray spoke quietly, brushing off his hands.

I stretched and took a seat.

“Good work, Ray.”

“I simply did what had to be done.”

It didn’t take long to find the designated personal research lab.

Since the assignment had already been completed, and Ray had received the location—.

However, the problem was the state of the lab’s interior.

‘To think it would be this messy.’

It was far too dirty for the office of an instructor in the swordsmanship department, which held high prestige within the academy.

It seemed that the previous occupant had left without bothering to clean up properly.

And even aside from cleaning, we would have to remodel the space to suit our needs.

So, as soon as we arrived, we began tidying up the lab.

—I’ll take care of it. Edgar, you can step outside for a while.

—It’s fine. This is my workspace, so I should clean it myself, don’t you think? If we do it together, it’ll be done quicker.

A noble cleaning?

Ray was flustered, trying to stop me at the sight of something he could hardly imagine, but I didn’t want to leave everything to him.

After all, I had cleaned up countless barracks after battles before returning home. Doing this wouldn’t tarnish a noble’s honor or dignity.

If anything, doing it together would save time, and I could organize the lab exactly how I wanted.

So, we worked up quite a sweat, and finally finished cleaning.

Though it may not seem like much, the grand cleaning took almost three hours.

“Still, it’s finished quicker than I thought. When I first saw it, I was sure we’d be at it all day.”

“It seems most of the necessary items were already in place. There was even some refreshments prepared in one corner.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yes. Should I prepare something for you? I noticed there were quite a few chocolate biscuits, which I believe you favor.”

“…That’s a misunderstanding.”

I honestly have no idea why I used to like chocolate so much.

Now, I can’t stand anything sweet—it sends shivers down my spine.

As I awkwardly tried to explain to Ray, who tilted his head in curiosity and asked if my tastes had changed—

Knock, knock, knock.

Someone knocked at the door of the research lab, which hadn’t even officially opened yet.

“Nice to see you, Instructor Edgar.”

It was a familiar face.

Akina Crowflin.

A swordmaster hero who had awakened the ‘Fourth Crossroad’ at a young age, earning the title ‘Star of the Kingdom.’

As an instructor, she wasn’t just famous in the swordsmanship department, but throughout Tristan Military Academy.

She had also been the overseer who conducted my third practical test during the instructor exam.

Slightly taken aback by her sudden appearance, I spoke up.

“Hello. Um, Akina… senior?”

Not sure how to address her, my words trailed off.

Glancing at Ray, I saw her nodding as if to say it was fine.

A sign that I hadn’t made a mistake in my reply.

As expected, Ray never misses a thing.

“May I come in for a moment?”

“Oh, yes. Please, come in.”

It was a relief that we had just finished cleaning the research lab. An hour ago, it would have been hard to even find a place to sit.

Akina walked in slowly and found a seat on the sofa.

Scratching my head at the unexpected guest, I glanced over at Ray.

” Ray, um…”

“I’ll prepare some tea.”

“Right.”

We were in sync. When I first returned, Ray didn’t quite understand me, but now he could figure out what I wanted just from my expression or a look.

He could practically read my mind now.

“Akina, would peppermint tea be okay?”

“Yes, anything is fine. Come and sit down; we have a lot to discuss.”

Her words sounded urgent, so I sat down on the sofa across from her.

“As you may already know, let me introduce myself again. I’m Akina Crowflin, a first-class instructor at Tristan Hero Academy’s swordsmanship department.”

Akina got straight to the point and extended her hand.

I carefully shook her hand and responded.

“I’m Edgar Mulick, a new instructor.”

“And I’m also going to be your senior instructor, overseeing your training.”

“…What?”

She had said something I hadn’t heard before.

Akina pulled out some documents from her coat and continued speaking.

“Every instructor selected for the academy is assigned a senior instructor, no exceptions. Becoming an instructor doesn’t mean you’re ready to be deployed right away. You learn the ropes by assisting your senior and working on joint research.”

The documents she handed me contained all the details she had just mentioned.

Assignment of departments for the 107th new instructors in Tristan’s swordsmanship department.

As she had explained, no new instructor could begin teaching immediately. They had to build experience under the supervision of a senior instructor before becoming independent.

“But in your case, Edgar, things are a little different. You’ve been assigned the rank of third-class instructor from the start, meaning you can be deployed immediately.”

“Oh…?”

“So, you won’t be assisting with any duties or participating in joint research. You’ll likely jump straight into preparing for lectures and field research. The semester starts in less than two months, and you only have about a month left to set up your courses and open registration.”

I had been assigned as a third-class instructor, a rank that allowed me to create courses from the very first semester.

However, as a brand-new instructor, I was far from ready to create and teach a class. I had no experience, no plan, and no idea what kind of course I should even offer.

Akina had come to fill in those gaps and help guide me.

…And.

“From now on, I’ll be personally mentoring you. Edgar, do you have time tomorrow?”

She clearly wasn’t the type to drag things out.
