Suzuki’s Unraveling Sanity and the Shifting Debate Trial

Chapter 18 • 1,480 words • 13 min read

Confronted by the collective suspicion directed at him, Suzuki Minoru found himself breaking into a cold sweat.

Ishii Yoshimi scoffed, “Tch! The more you try to wriggle out of this, the more suspicious you appear!”

Suzuki Minoru pleaded, “Please, just listen to my explanation! I wasn’t the only one who visited the first-floor lobby last night! Kamimura Anko, you can corroborate that, can’t you?!”

Kamimura Anko confirmed, “That much is true. Chisaka Erin’s testimony indeed mentioned that besides Suzuki Minoru, Amagasa Gen also went to the first-floor lobby last night.”

Takagi Masahiko’s sharp gaze pivoted to Amagasa Gen. “Amagasa-san, could you tell us what time you returned to your room?”

Amagasa Gen replied, “Ah… I left my room around eight last night and was back by nine.”

Chisaka Erin added, “Oh… I went out to dispose of some trash around eight o’clock and coincidentally saw Amagasa Gen heading to the first-floor lobby alone.”

“See?” Amagasa Gen exclaimed, then continued, “But, Takagi Masahiko, your suspicious demeanor just now was truly unsettling… Didn’t you say we all needed to stick together during the class trial? Or were you merely… speaking in platitudes? Have I truly misjudged you…?”

“No, no, it’s nothing like that…” Takagi Masahiko quickly interjected, explaining in a rush, “I was simply trying to verify Amagasa Gen’s movements…” He feared deeply that he might have inadvertently offended an innocent person.

Ishii Yoshimi chided, “Takagi, you shouldn’t just accuse people without cause…”

Kitajima Kazumitsu chimed in, “Exactly! We’re all supposed to be getting along peacefully…”

Akino Atsushi nodded in agreement, “That’s right, that’s right.”

Habara Kazuhiro declared, “Takagi Masahiko, as a member of the disciplinary committee, I must address your rather unfriendly attitude.”

“Ugh, uh…” Takagi Masahiko stammered, “I, I understand…”

Amemiya Wakaba mused, “So, it seems Suzuki Minoru remains our primary suspect?”

“Is that even a question?” Katagiri Mimi scoffed, jabbing a dissatisfied finger in his direction. “He suddenly brought up Amagasa Gen just now to derail our interrogation of him. He’s clearly trying to sow discord!”

A disquieting feeling settled over me; something felt profoundly wrong. Why had the conversation veered in such an odd direction?

No, this wasn’t right at all. There had to be a crucial contradiction lurking somewhere! Damn it… I needed to quickly devise a way to make everyone see clearly again.

Akahira Yuusuke roared, “Suzuki Minoru! If you’re truly a man, then explain this at once! Did you kill Furuhata Jun?! Why would you do such a thing?!” His eyes, blazing with an intense fire of loathing, seemed to pierce Suzuki Minoru directly.

“I… I… Ev-everyone… Ugh-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah!” Suzuki Minoru stammered, his voice dissolving into a prolonged, guttural shriek. He clutched at his hair with both hands, as if plunging into utter chaos, his face ashen white like frost, writhing and groaning in agony.

“Oh my? Hahahaha…” Suzuki Minoru’s voice suddenly shifted, his previous agony replaced by a chilling mirth. “How truly united and friendly you all are… The narrowness born of unimaginative minds, the harsh, self-righteous pronouncements, the hollow jargon, the usurped ideals, the rigid ideological systems! Yet, I absolutely adore this trajectory of events!!!!” His expression, which had moments ago been wracked with pain, was now eerily transformed. His lips stretched into an impossibly wide, grotesque smile that seemed to tear his face, while his brows furrowed in a fierce, unnatural knot. As for his eyes…

I regret to say, I couldn’t discern their true nature.

Suzuki Minoru shrieked, “Precisely! That’s right… I am the one who killed Furuhata Jun!!”

“I was the one who went to the warehouse at night to fetch the kite string! I was the one who constructed the murder device! I was the one who suggested Furuhata Jun go to the third floor! And I was the one who ensnared Furuhata Jun in the trap!!!!!” Suzuki Minoru, in a fit of wild delirium, thrust out his right hand, as if attempting to crush the very air around him. His slender, bony fingers and distinctly articulated hand were horrifyingly clear.

Amemiya Wakaba gasped, “You, are you out of your mind…? How could your… sanity suddenly unravel like this?!”

Osakabe Nanase trembled, “Suzuki Minoru is so… so… terrifying! Suzuki Minoru… please, try to pull yourself together…”

Akino Atsushi exclaimed, “Is this what it means to be schizophrenic?! His other personality is utterly vile!”

Ishii Yoshimi stated, “Given such a depraved personality, it’s hardly surprising to imagine a powerful urge to kill.”

“Ah, yes… You pathetic fools could never comprehend the utterly transcendent ecstasy that murder bestows!” Suzuki Minoru cackled. “To wield an intense, all-consuming murderous intent, to fasten the chain of soul-snatching (TL Note: A metaphorical term for the act of taking a life, implying a deliberate, almost ritualistic capture of the soul.), and to revel in the sight of your victim’s helpless, powerless death throes! Indeed, with but a gentle embrace, a life can be snuffed out as easily as a small rat scurrying from a putrid sewer is mercilessly crushed underfoot by a passing stranger!”

Akahira Yuusuke roared, “I’ve had enough of this!!!!! How dare you reduce the preciousness of life to such a contemptible state! Monokuma! Start the voting now!! I cannot endure another second in this room!”

“Please, wait a moment!” Kamimura Anko interjected, her voice cutting through the rising hysteria. After a moment of profound, quiet contemplation, she was now determined to halt this instigated, utterly irrational farce.

Akahira Yuusuke bristled. “Wait for what?! Kamimura Anko, I genuinely cannot comprehend why you’d still show mercy to such a remorseless killer!”

“No, that’s not what I meant at all,” Kamimura Anko clarified.

Kamimura Anko urged, “Everyone, can we please calm down and think rationally? Is it truly wise for us to jump to such a definitive conclusion right now?”

Takahashi Aki pondered, “Kamimura Anko, are you suggesting… that Suzuki Minoru isn’t the true culprit…?”

“Precisely,” Kamimura Anko affirmed. “I believe there is currently no conclusive evidence to definitively prove that Suzuki Minoru is the true culprit. While it’s true his demeanor just underwent a drastic one-hundred-and-eighty-degree shift, his violent and deranged expressions perfectly align with everyone’s stereotypical image of a murderer.”

“However,” she continued, “I now contend that the true culprit is not Suzuki Minoru.”

Kitajima Kazumitsu stammered, “But… Kamimura Anko, are you still defending Suzuki Minoru at a time like this? His behavior just now was utterly abnormal…”

Takagi Masahiko voiced his support. “I trust Kamimura Anko’s judgment. I also believe she possesses evidence to prove that Suzuki Minoru is not the true culprit.”

“I… I also believe…” Osakabe Nanase faltered, “that Suzuki Minoru is not… the true culprit. I trust Anko-chan… and I implore everyone else to trust Anko-chan too, okay?”

Chisaka Erin suggested, “Perhaps everyone is letting their emotions get the better of them… Can we first calmly discuss the possibility of Suzuki Minoru being the true culprit?”

“See that? See that?” Suzuki Minoru cackled, a smug grin spreading across his face. “As expected, there are still some who believe I’m not the true culprit behind Furuhata Jun’s murder, hehehe.”

Habara Kazuhiro retorted, “I don’t believe it! I insist on forming my own judgment on this matter!”

Akahira Yuusuke added, “I don’t believe it either! Suzuki Minoru, you’re undoubtedly still feigning innocence to deceive us all!”

Katagiri Mimi declared, “I, too, stand with those who don’t believe him!”

Akino Atsushi piped up, “Ah… count me in as well.”

Ishii Yoshimi asserted, “I refuse to let Suzuki Minoru get away with this!”

Monokuma suddenly interjected, “Hold on!!”

“Judging by this escalating tension…” Monokuma observed, “it seems you’re on the verge of splitting into two opposing factions, aren’t you?”

“Yohohohoho!” Monokuma cackled gleefully. “My internal sensors are absolutely boiling with excitement!”

Takahashi Aki timidly inquired, “Um… won’t your sensors burn out from such high temperatures…?”

“In that case,” Monokuma announced, “you can confidently entrust the task of this two-faction debate to me! I shall transform this very trial court into a [Shifting Debate Trial]!”

“A Shifting Debate Trial!!” Suzuki Minoru shrieked, his voice filled with manic delight. “How utterly magnificent that sounds! Two formidable factions clashing fiercely on a brand new stage, no holds barred, hahahaha! Hurry, I’m already ravenous for it!!!”

Monokuma explained, “The rules for the Shifting Debate Trial are as follows: When one or more individuals hold a differing opinion on a particular point compared to two or more others, the two groups shall be divided into a ‘pro’ side and an ‘anti’ side! Each side will first present a single representative to engage in debate. Once the debate concludes, the side that was challenged must rotate in a new representative who has not yet spoken. Should every argument put forth by all members of one side be successfully refuted by the opposing side, then the opposing side shall be declared the victor!”

“And with that,” Monokuma declared, “let the trial begin!”
