Shelter

Chapter 2 • 1,792 words • 15 min read

It was the familiar shelter from her previous life.

A two-story villa in the suburbs, slightly away from the city.

The Sabretooth pulled into the yard, and Ping Chengcheng was placed in isolation in a garage alone.

“Don’t be afraid, wait for me, I’ll go get some food.” Song Ning gently rubbed her head, closed the garage door, and left.

The garage was pitch black, with only the faint light emanating from Ping Chengcheng’s bewitching red pupils.

Ping Chengcheng remembered this night.

It should be the second month after the apocalypse broke out.

The shelter’s food had been exhausted.

Today, Song Ning and the others had set out to find food, but they had only found a bag of rice.

There were fourteen people in the shelter, which would last for at most a week.

The situation here was that six people, led by Song Ning, intended to go to the S City shelter, but it was dangerous to cross the city center.

Then there were eight people, led by the middle-aged man from earlier, who advocated continuing to stay in this place and look for food.

A week later, during an outing to search for supplies, Song Ning and the others were betrayed by the middle-aged man, forced to face a horde of thousands of zombies, and in the end, could only head to the S City shelter without any supplies.

Ping Chengcheng sneered inwardly.

Now that she had this information, she would never let those things happen again.

Once the quarantine was over, she would find an opportunity to kill him!

With her around, no one would be allowed to hurt Song Ning!

Thinking this, Ping Chengcheng’s cute face gradually became strangely ferocious.

“Click, click~”

The garage door was reopened, and Song Ning had changed her clothes.

She was wearing black trousers and a sweatshirt, with a fitted black down jacket on top.

A capable look. But ordinary clothes couldn’t hide her captivating face and temperament.

She came to Ping Chengcheng with a bowl of hot porridge in her hand.

Ping Chengcheng was still bound by ropes.

“Little sister, are you really not bitten by a zombie?”

Ping Chengcheng quickly shook her head: “Sister, I haven’t been bitten.”

“Has any zombie blood entered your eyes? Or your mouth?”

Ping Chengcheng looked innocent and answered obediently, “No, I just came out of my hiding place today, and I met you just a minute later.”

“Then… let me check your body later~ Let’s drink the porridge first.”

Song Ning carefully identified Ping Chengcheng’s expression.

She had self-studied some psychology and could tell that Ping Chengcheng wasn’t lying in her previous sentence.

If such a child were to lie, she was confident that she could see through it at a glance.

Ping Chengcheng nodded obediently.

The ropes on her body loosened, and Song Ning untied them for her.

Taking the hot porridge that Song Ning handed over, Ping Chengcheng suddenly wanted Song Ning to feed her.

So she frowned slightly, her voice coy: “Sister… I haven’t eaten in so long, I don’t have the strength… I’m afraid I’ll spill the porridge…”

Song Ning sighed helplessly, and her eyes showed more pity for Ping Chengcheng: “I’ll feed you then.”

She held the bowl in her hand, took a spoonful, and fed the little girl little by little.

Feeling the warm porridge that entered her stomach, Ping Chengcheng’s eyes were slightly sore.

She looked at Song Ning carefully holding the spoon, waiting for her to eat the porridge, and vaguely saw the image of Song Ning in her previous life, enduring hunger and leaving the last of the food for her.

‘So good… So good… To be able to see you again… Song Ning…’

It seemed because of her emotional fluctuations, Ping Chengcheng suddenly felt some extremely tiny tentacles growing out of her back.

They meandered towards Song Ning, wanting to touch her affectionately…

‘No!’

Ping Chengcheng tried her best to restrain the instinctive impulse, and finally hid those strange tentacles in her body.

Taking a deep breath, Ping Chengcheng calmed her emotions.

A teardrop fell on Song Ning’s tiger’s mouth.

“Huh? Little sister, are you crying?”

Ping Chengcheng didn’t speak, just mumbled “hmm.”

Song Ning wasn’t very good at comforting people, she touched the girl’s head: “Good girl, don’t cry.”

Ping Chengcheng immediately stopped crying.

Song Ning nodded in satisfaction, the porridge was also finished.

“Okay, sister, take off your clothes, I’ll check your body.”

Hearing these words, Ping Chengcheng blushed a little, but she also knew that this was an unavoidable step.

Sometimes, even just some abrasions could cause the zombie virus to infect through the mucous membranes.

In her previous life, there were many people who didn’t even know they were injured, and then turned into zombies for no apparent reason.

Quickly taking off her ill-fitting, ragged clothes, Song Ning turned on the flashlight and examined the girl’s delicate body in the dim garage.

“By the way, why did you appear there alone?” Song Ning asked the question in her mind.

Ping Chengcheng thought about how she was rescued by Song Ning in her previous life, brewed her emotions, and immediately said with a sob,

“My, my mom and dad, they all died, I hid there for a long, long time…”

“Mom and dad gave me all the food, and in the end, only I survived, but the food ran out quickly, so, so… I wanted to go out and find some food…”

“But as soon as I went out, I was chased by a lot of scary zombies…”

The girl cried weakly, then buried her head in Song Ning’s arms.

Song Ning lovingly hugged the girl tightly in her arms, gently patting the girl’s trembling back.

Little did she know that the reason the girl was trembling was because she was so excited that she couldn’t restrain herself.

Ping Chengcheng greedily breathed in the air mixed with Song Ning’s scent, her face flushed strangely.

‘Song Ning’s scent is still so good~’

Her smooth back once again felt a little itchy, the tentacles wanted to crawl out disobediently, but were once again suppressed into her body by the girl.

However, immediately after, many black vine-like tentacles appeared on the girl’s arm, frantically and silently wrapping around Song Ning’s ankles where Song Ning couldn’t see them.

The strange possessiveness made them act uncontrollably…

‘Song… Ning… Song… Song… Ning…’

The brown tentacles quietly emitted some murmurs that humans couldn’t hear.

“Hmm?”

Song Ning felt her ankles were a little cold and strangely turned her head to look at her feet.

In an instant, the tentacles receded like a tide, as if they had never appeared.

“That’s strange…” Song Ning murmured softly.

She gently pushed away the girl in her arms, checked the girl’s body, then cupped her cute face in her hands, and looked at her red blood pupils,

“Okay, I’m done checking, there are no wounds on your body.”

“But I’m a little curious, are your eyes really naturally red?”

Ping Chengcheng left Song Ning’s embrace with some reluctance, the cheerful tentacles also stopped rioting.

“Yes… I told you I wasn’t infected with the zombie virus, and besides, it’s impossible to be, zombies’ eyes are white.”

She looked shy and pitifully at Song Ning.

Song Ning nodded in agreement.

Indeed, in the two months since the apocalypse, she hadn’t seen zombies with eyes other than white.

Song Ning found a set of clean children’s clothes for Ping Chengcheng and took her hand into the entrance hall of the villa.

The living room was right inside the door, with a fire pit in the center, and a dozen people sitting in a circle, warming themselves by the fire.

Because of the apocalypse, except for a few bases that still had electricity, shelters like theirs, which could be destroyed at any time, could only use firelight for lighting and to ward off the cold.

Moreover, it was still February 28th, which was already winter.

S City was also located in the north, and perhaps because of the apocalypse, the temperature was even lower than in previous years.

“Okay, I’ve finished checking, she doesn’t have any signs of injury.”

The moment the two entered, more than a dozen gazes scrutinized Ping Chengcheng.

Ping Chengcheng immediately showed the appearance that a little girl should have.

She fearfully grabbed Song Ning’s clothes and hid behind Song Ning, trembling.

Among the crowd, a man stood up, it was the middle-aged man from the back seat of the Sabretooth earlier.

His name was Zhou Wen, and he was a salesman before the apocalypse.

The current situation was obvious.

When Song Ning wasn’t around just now, he must have spread some words that were unfavorable to unity.

He stared at Ping Chengcheng with cold eyes,

“What if you’ve finished checking? You and I both know, the mucous membranes can also transmit the virus.”

“In short, if zombie blood splashes into your eyes, you’ll die too! Have you forgotten Ah Kun?!”

“Before, he didn’t have any wounds on his body, and suddenly turned into a zombie, and then attacked three other brothers in our camp!”

“Especially since her eyes are red, even if it’s not the zombie virus, what if it’s some other virus?!”

After he finished speaking, a boy suddenly stood up,

“That’s right, I think we should still lock her in the garage for one night! See if she’ll mutate into a zombie!”

Song Ning immediately interrupted him,

“Are you crazy? She’s just a little girl! The weather is so cold now, it’s even minus 10 degrees at night. An adult might be able to cope with one night in the garage, but that doesn’t mean she can! Besides, she’s weak now!”

Zhou Wen snorted coldly.

“Even if you don’t talk about these things, you know how scarce our base’s food is now.”

“Even if she doesn’t turn into a zombie tomorrow, she’ll have to participate in work later! Otherwise, just forget it!”

“I don’t want to live in the same room with a little kid who might turn into a monster and is of no use!”

“I’ll take care of her food, you don’t have to worry about it. I’ll keep her with me tonight.”

After Song Ning said this, she took Ping Chengcheng’s hand and walked into a room.

It wasn’t unreasonable for everyone to worry about Ping Chengcheng’s mutation, and Song Ning knew that she wasn’t being very reasonable.

If Ping Chengcheng looked like an adult male or female, she probably wouldn’t have saved her, but she was a pitiful girl alone in the apocalypse…

It could also be considered as constantly reminding herself that she needed to retain her last bit of humanity.
