The Oath of the New Moon and the Chant of the Full Moon

Chapter 20 • 1,242 words • 11 min read

“I’m full.”

Mylian dropped her fork, rising to leave the dining room. Only by doing so could she suppress the urge to retort to Stella.

“Ah! Sister, wait!”

Stella wanted to explain, but her plea only made Mylian walk away more decisively, even before Bertrand and Delilah could speak.

She left, giving Stella no opportunity to bridge the gap.

“…Sigh.” Stella pursed her lips, a sense of loss welling within her.

Despite her fervent eagerness, she had been met with her sister’s cold shoulder. Though she understood the reasons, a feeling of melancholy still lingered in her heart.

Witnessing the sisters’ strained interaction, Delilah slowly lowered her fork, her gentle gaze already offering silent comfort to Stella.

“Stella, come here for a moment.”

“Mother, I just want my sister to be happy.” Stella approached Delilah, hoping to hear some good advice.

Stella upset her sister before? Now she wants to win her back.

Delilah took Stella’s hand, her azure eyes fixed on her daughter. She clearly saw Stella’s true feelings.

“Mhm… I went too far. Sister won’t forgive me easily.”

“Stella, have you sincerely apologized to your sister?”

“I tried, but she wouldn’t accept my apology.”

“Then Mama will help you both.”

Delilah didn’t inquire about the specific events between the sisters, assuming they were unpleasant. Blaming Stella would be meaningless, especially since she was already determined to change.

“Darling, the house is yours this afternoon.” Delilah instructed Bertrand, who nodded in agreement.

“Mhm, don’t forget about the two girls. They’ll need suitable magical artifacts.” Bertrand reminded her, and Delilah understood his meaning.

Both Stella and Mylian had reached an age suitable for enrollment in an academy. They each needed something to protect themselves.

That afternoon, in the White Rose Merchant District.

A carriage halted on the marble-paved street, and three figures disembarked. Delilah led the way, with Stella and Mylian held by her hands on either side.

True to the district’s name, white rose design elements permeated the entire area, from the streetlights to the shop signs. Even a church-like building was adorned with white rose decorations.

Unlike the commoner districts, everything here exuded an air of luxury.

“Come on, let’s go buy you two little ones something.”

Delilah smiled generously, and Stella returned the smile. Mylian, however, maintained a cold, unyielding expression.

The trio entered a magic antique shop. Delilah intended to first search for suitable magical artifacts for the sisters among the antiques. Other shops sold mass-produced, standardized magical items that were easily exploited and often inferior in quality to true antiques.

“Welcome! Beautiful lady, pretty young ladies, please tell me what you need!”

The mustachioed shop owner behind the counter beamed, a shrewd glint in his round spectacles. He had likely spotted their extraordinary attire and was delighted at the prospect of a substantial profit.

“Bring out all your hidden treasures, the older the better. We’re not interested in anything on display.”

Delilah seemed accustomed to such purchases, her tone clearly dismissive of the items openly displayed. This caused the owner’s shrewd gaze to soften slightly.

“Hahaha, esteemed guests indeed! It seems I must present my special collection. Please wait a moment.” The owner hurried to the back room to retrieve his merchandise.

While he was busy, Stella briefly surveyed the items on the counter. From her memories of her previous life, she could identify a few.

A magic painting discovered in ancient mansion ruins, which automatically mirrored the holder’s appearance but had the side effect of uncontrollably displaying the previous owner’s ghost at night? That’s a sure way to scare someone to death in the middle of the night!

A rune stone that only produced spontaneous illumination in sunlight. What was the point of inventing that?

A portable perfume aggregation device, designed to maintain its own internal air circulation without diffusion. Wouldn’t that just suffocate oneself?

These were antiques, certainly, but they were genuinely useless.

Stella chose to trust her mother’s judgment. She hoped to find an item that could, at the very least, help improve her relationship with her sister so Mylian wouldn’t dislike her so intensely.

“My esteemed guests, thank you for waiting. Please take a look at these.”

The owner confidently placed a box on the table and opened it. Objects with an aged aura were once again exposed to the light. Delilah swept her gaze over them, a smile gracing her lips.

“Quite interesting. Stella, Mylian, each of you pick something you like. Remember to choose together.”

Delilah moved the box, brimming with opportunities, and placed it before the two sisters.

“Sister, it’s time to choose.” Stella looked at the silent Mylian, whose eyes flickered with a hint of surprise that she quickly suppressed.

They actually intend for me to choose?

Mylian had always thought Stella and Delilah’s words were a joke, but now that she was truly asked to choose, she couldn’t make up her mind.

“Mylian, quickly choose with your sister! I wish you both good luck in picking a magic artifact for a magic user!”

Delilah encouraged them from the side. Mylian could only reach out, a hint of hesitation in her movement.

“Young ladies, magical artifacts inherently possess a resonance trait. Perhaps if you close your eyes and explore together, the artifact you ultimately choose will be the one destined for you.”

The owner explained, arms crossed. Stella and Mylian exchanged a glance, then chose to close their eyes, not looking at each other.

Their hands delved into the box, searching. A subtle attraction coiled around their fingertips—this was the so-called resonance.

Stella recalled key plot points. What she was doing now had never happened in the original story. What would the villainess’s destined magic artifact be?

Sizzle.

A jolt of electric current coursed through Stella’s body. She found something that particularly attracted her and promptly pulled it out.

At the same time, Mylian also reacted, grasping a resonating magical artifact.

Two silver-framed blue pendants, small enough to fit in their palms. Stella’s was crescent-shaped, while Mylian’s was a full moon.

“The Oath of the New Moon and the Chant of the Full Moon? These are truly the two items the young ladies resonated with?”

The owner’s voice was filled with pleasant surprise. He saw both pendants glowing with starry blue light, as if they had already recognized their masters.

“What’s special about them?” Delilah asked.

“These two correspond to two legendary magic users, a pair of sisters. The elder sister excelled at sword spells, and the Chant of the Full Moon was a longsword forged for her by her younger sister using an ancient dragon’s tooth. The younger sister excelled at magic, and the Oath of the New Moon was a staff refined by her elder sister from an angel’s feather. They loved each other deeply, unwilling to live alone, and jointly sacrificed their lives to seal away a demon god. This widely circulated story is truly moving.”

After the owner’s rather emotional introduction, Delilah was quite pleased with the narrative.

“Gifts exchanged between legendary magic-user sisters? They are indeed suitable for them.”

“Are these two young ladies also sisters?”

“Yes, I hope they cherish each other, just as the story tells.”

Delilah took Stella and Mylian’s hands, placing them together. She smiled at both, conveying her hopes.

“…” Mylian remained silent, convinced it was impossible. Her hatred for Stella would never change.

“I’ll work hard!” Stella insisted, believing anything was possible, and continued to smile at Mylian.
