A Moment of Peace Amidst War

Chapter 241,105 words10 min read

Kael Kingdom, Royal City.

The bustling streets were lined with various stalls, offering a myriad of goods, both familiar and exotic. Every pedestrian moved with a serene expression and a faint smile, savoring their peaceful lives.

At this moment, they remained oblivious to the war that had erupted on the borders, where vibrant lives were already being extinguished. The ominous clouds of conflict were slowly beginning to gather.

Within the Royal Palace, Lisa Kael sat in a chair, her face etched with worry. Before her lay stacks of documents—intelligence reports freshly arrived from the front lines.

“Duke Ma’se is severely wounded, and the southwest border defense has collapsed. Number Three has openly taken command, retreating all forces to the fortress, where they are now holding a desperate stand.”

“Duke Lu Kaer is gravely injured. Although the defense line can barely be maintained, the battle has been exceptionally brutal.”

“The Dragon Race is launching a massive assault. While they have been held back for the time being, it won’t be long before they breach our territory directly!”

Lisa Kael’s expression was grim as she scanned each report. She had known that the Human Race’s strength was insufficient to withstand the combined might of the Winged, Beast, and Dragon Races, yet she hadn’t anticipated such a dire situation so swiftly.

In truth, it wasn’t entirely unexpected. The Dragon Race was, after all, the strongest of the five races. While they were currently being repelled, this very resistance had tied down many of the Human Race’s high-level combatants, preventing them from reinforcing other fronts. Consequently, the other defense lines had crumbled with alarming speed.

‘One front must be resolved as quickly as possible!’

Lisa Kael tossed the processed reports onto the table, then wearily rubbed her forehead.

Noticing that Lisa Kael had finally finished with the intelligence, Jiu Hui immediately stepped forward to massage her temples. Seeing Lisa Kael’s exhausted face, Jiu Hui’s heart ached slightly as she softly spoke.

“There, you’ve been working tirelessly for a day and a night. You should rest.”

Since yesterday, after resolving Jiu Hui’s matter, Lisa Kael had remained here, dealing with these documents. It was now the morning of the second day.

Four days had passed since the Winged Race and Beast Race officially declared war. On the third day, just two days prior, the Dragon Race launched a full-scale offensive. Simultaneously, the Winged Race and Beast Race also initiated massive attacks. It was on that very day that Duke Ma’se and Count Kael suffered severe injuries, leading to widespread collapse of the southeast and southwest border defenses.

“It’s nothing. It’s only been a day. It’s far less than the three days and three nights of the last war,” Lisa Kael said, waving her hand dismissively.

Hearing this, Jiu Hui paused her movements, gazing at the dark circles beneath Lisa Kael’s eyes. Then she spoke.

“Now, you’ve finished all the documents you needed to process, haven’t you?”

Lisa Kael nodded.

“Yes, for now, they’re done.”

“Is there anything else you need to do?”

“No, there’s nothing else.”

Lisa Kael replied after a moment of thought.

Upon hearing this, Jiu Hui grabbed Lisa Kael’s hand and pulled her up.

“Since there’s nothing else, let’s go to sleep!”

Lisa Kael, pulled along by Jiu Hui, paused for a moment, then quickly exclaimed.

“Wait a moment, wait a moment!”

Jiu Hui stopped.

“What is it?” she asked, her eyes narrowing. “You’re not trying to find an excuse to go back to work, are you?”

Hearing this, Lisa Kael gave Jiu Hui a deadpan stare.

“Do you see me as a workaholic?”

With that, Lisa Kael addressed the empty room.

“Number Five, send those documents on the table to the border.”

“Understood!”

A voice echoed from the room, and then, with a ‘swoosh!’, a black shadow appeared, gathered the documents from the table, and with another ‘swoosh!’, vanished once more.

Seeing this, Lisa Kael stretched, then embraced Jiu Hui.

“Come on, let’s go to sleep.”

With these words, she carried Jiu Hui towards the inner chambers.

Jiu Hui felt Lisa Kael’s delicate body embracing her and was slightly stunned.

‘Was she mistaken about Lisa Kael? Logically, shouldn’t she be putting on a grim, resentful face and refusing to sleep? Why did it feel like she had been waiting for Jiu Hui to pull her to bed all along?’

Inside the room,

Lisa Kael lay on the bed, dressed in a pale purple nightgown, while Jiu Hui was completely naked, without a stitch of clothing.

Jiu Hui glanced at Lisa Kael’s nightgown, then snorted lightly and averted her gaze.

She had previously mentioned to Lisa Kael that she wanted a nightgown, but Lisa Kael had refused without hesitation. The reason was simple: a body clothed in pajamas wasn’t comfortable to hug!

When Lisa Kael had said that, Jiu Hui had a belly full of complaints she wanted to voice, but in the end, she said nothing. She simply peeled away Lisa Kael, who had been clinging to her like an octopus, then turned her back to Lisa Kael, presenting only the back of her head.

After Jiu Hui lay down on the bed, Lisa Kael immediately embraced her, her face radiating happiness.

“Ah, Jiu Hui’s body is indeed so soft. It’s incredibly comfortable to hold.”

Watching Lisa Kael rub against her body, Jiu Hui gave her a helpless roll of her eyes.

“Alright, hurry up and sleep. Your eyes can barely stay open, yet you’re still fooling around.”

Lisa Kael, however, looked at Jiu Hui innocently.

“I’m not fooling around. I just can’t fall asleep without hugging Jiu Hui.”

Seeing this, Jiu Hui turned over to face Lisa Kael, then reached out and embraced her.

“Is this better?”

Lisa Kael smiled, then snuggled closer, closing her eyes.

Jiu Hui looked at Lisa Kael, smiled faintly herself, and then closed her eyes.

She was also very tired. She had stayed up late with Lisa Kael yesterday, and seeing that Lisa Kael hadn’t slept, she had risen early today. Now, she was also very sleepy.

Soon, Lisa Kael’s breathing became even. Jiu Hui opened her eyes and gazed at Lisa Kael’s sleeping face, her expression gentle. ‘Really, she fell asleep so quickly. It seems she truly is exhausted. The events of the past two days have put a great deal of pressure on her.’

Gently pulling the blanket over Lisa Kael, Jiu Hui then embraced her again and closed her eyes.

Before long, Jiu Hui also drifted off to sleep. In the room, two beautiful young women slept in each other’s arms.
