A Familiar Yet Unfamiliar Visit

Chapter 261,360 words12 min read

The faces were still familiar.

Dr. Chen, who appeared stern behind his glasses but possessed a truly gentle nature, along with the kind and meticulous nurses, Xiao Li, Xiao Ke, and Xiao Ying—all of them were familiar faces from her memories.

As for Bai Jingjing, she was also a familiar face in their memories… yet not entirely so.

For instance, this prominent pair felt quite unfamiliar.

“Jingjing, it’s only been a few months, but your transformation is truly remarkable,” Dr. Chen, the older and composed physician, observed. “I recall you being as petite as a middle school girl just a few months ago.”

Xiao Li cleared her throat, gently reminding him, “Dr. Chen, it has indeed only been a few months—less than half a year.”

A subtle shift in expression rippled through everyone present.

It was then that Bai Jingjing understood: while their memories had been altered, transforming her from Bai Jin into Bai Jingjing, from an unremarkable boy into an adorable beautiful girl, her… chest size remained uncorrected.

But why? The young girl couldn’t fathom it.

“It’s truly incredible, all within about half a year,” Nurse Xiao Ke remarked from beside them. “I distinctly remember, a little over six months ago, something fell onto the railing outside the balcony, and you simply squeezed right through the gap in the window bars. Good heavens, a space like that—anyone with a chest would never have fit!”

Ah, so that’s it.

So that’s why this particular memory couldn’t be altered?

Bai Jingjing, using her small arms to subtly adjust her ‘curves,’ spoke with a hint of guilt, “Perhaps it’s just puberty kicking in, and the nutrition finally catching up, leading to a sudden, abundant growth.”

How to put it? They weren’t abnormally large, nor did they approach any unhealthy proportions. The sole issue lay in this:

“But the timeframe is simply too short—just a few months. Is everything truly alright?” Dr. Chen asked with concern. “Would you like to have a quick check-up? I could reach out to a gynecologist friend.”

“No, no, it’s really fine, these are very healthy,” Bai Jingjing instinctively hugged her ‘curves’ protectively. “Truly, if you don’t believe me, ask her.”

With that, she turned her gaze to Luo Xuan.

Luo Xuan paused, slightly taken aback, before quickly nodding. “Ah, yes, healthy. Extremely healthy.”

As for why she knew whether Bai Jingjing’s ‘curves’ were healthy or not, neither girl gave it much thought.

However, the doctor and the nurses certainly did.

“You two… well.”

Everyone seemed to grasp why Bai Jingjing had claimed her nutrition was ‘catching up’ recently.

On that note, they recalled Bai Jingjing having discussed her preferences for girls in the past, though at the time, the doctor and nurses hadn’t paid it much mind. Reflecting on it now, it became clear that Bai Jingjing, this little ‘lily’ (TL Note: A common term in Chinese culture referring to a lesbian or a girl who likes other girls), had developed a liking for girls years ago.

It was strange, why hadn’t they noticed any issue before, only to realize it now?… Still, it wasn’t important; this was rather good.

“Xiao Luo, that’s your name, isn’t it?” Dr. Chen first nodded to Luo Xuan in greeting, then turned to Bai Jingjing. “Jingjing, what are you doing these days, and where are you living?”

“I’m taking on some work while also studying for school,” Bai Jingjing replied obediently. “Normally, I live at Sister Luo’s house.”

Dr. Chen wore an expression that plainly said, ‘Just as I thought.’

Sitting beside them, Luo Xuan’s bewilderment only deepened.

Although she had never suffered any major illnesses throughout her life, she had visited hospitals for occasional discomforts. In the outpatient department, facing various doctors, the questions had always revolved around ‘What’s bothering you?’ or ‘Where does it hurt?’

Yet now, the inquiries were entirely about things like, ‘Have you eaten?’ ‘Are you cold?’ or ‘What are you having for lunch?’

The nurses nearby, though not participating in the conversation, watched silently, their faces filled with profound satisfaction.

They would occasionally murmur remarks like, ‘Jingjing has grown up,’ or ‘Indeed, she’s grown up in every sense of the word.’

All in all, this was Luo Xuan’s first time in her life having such a casual, domestic chat with a doctor, and it felt utterly peculiar.

She had the strange sensation of being in a therapy session.

Despite Dr. Chen’s amiable demeanor and lack of any therapeutic jargon, the moment she donned her white coat, it gave off the distinct impression of ‘talk therapy.’

However, Luo Xuan’s mental health had always been robust. ‘Perhaps,’ she mused, ‘it would be better for my best friend, Xia Chu, to experience this instead.’

Just then, Dr. Chen inquired, “Jingjing has been living with you recently, how have you two been… getting along?”

“Quite well, though she doesn’t live with me all the time,” Luo Xuan, ever the honest one, seized the opportunity to bring up her best friend. “On weekends, she stays at Xia Chu’s house… another girl.”

Everyone around them, from the doctors to the nurses, froze slightly.

Nurse Xiao Ying was the first to break, “Another girl? And you know about it?”

She looked at Bai Jingjing, then at Luo Xuan, her eyes wide with disbelief.

“Well, Sister Xiao Ying, this matter,” Bai Jingjing began, unsure how to explain the situation of being ‘rented out’ as a girlfriend, “it has some very complex reasons.”

“Whether the reasons are complex or not isn’t important. What is important,” Nurse Xiao Ying said, glancing at Luo Xuan, “is that Xiao Luo wouldn’t have any objections, would she?”

Luo Xuan blinked, slightly puzzled. “I don’t have any objections.”

‘Why would I have objections?’

Nurse Xiao Ke, another one, also looked over. “Xiao Luo, you… don’t have any objections?”

“No,” Luo Xuan replied. “That person is my good friend, my best friend.”

“Ah, well then…”

The several young nurses exchanged glances, looking from one to another, utterly speechless for a long moment.

Jingjing had truly grown up, to a degree that extended beyond their realm of understanding.

Dr. Chen let out a soft cough. “Well, Jingjing, and Xiao Luo, I’m not really in a position to comment on your personal lives, but… do try to come for more regular check-ups when you have the time. And remember to exercise more often; life is in movement, and that goes for your… whatchamacallit… best friend, Xiao Luo.”

Dr. Chen felt as though she were one of those doctors on Baidu Answers (TL Note: A Chinese online Q&A platform, similar to Yahoo Answers) who gets asked particularly strange questions that reveal personal kinks, yet she stiffened her resolve and, with a straight face, offered advice purely from a medical standpoint.

Luo Xuan nodded, half-understanding. “Understood. Exercise is beneficial for health.”

‘How did the doctor know her best friend disliked exercise? It was quite miraculous. Still, she really should find an opportunity to bring her for a check-up.’

“Oh, Jingjing,” Dr. Chen suddenly remembered something else. “The school you’re attending, is it the Provincial Arts University you’ve always talked about?”

“Yes,” Bai Jingjing nodded obediently. “I’ll be enrolling this summer.”

“Alright, that school happens to have a partnership with our hospital. When it’s time for your entrance physical, it’ll most likely be held right here.”

“Really? That’s wonderful then.”

After exchanging a few more pleasantries, Dr. Chen was called away to work, and the young nurses gradually dispersed.

“We’re off to get busy now. We’ll chat again next time, Bai Jingjing, and Xiao Luo.”

“Alright then, see you later, Sister Xiao Li, Sister Xiao Ke, Sister Xiao Ying.”

Bai Jingjing waved, greeting each of them in turn.

Once the two girls were alone, Luo Xuan finally had the chance to ask the question she had been holding back for so long: “Bai Jingjing, how are you so familiar with the doctors and nurses?”

She had a fleeting illusion, as though she wasn’t facing medical staff at all, but rather Bai Jingjing’s own family members.
