The God of Death’s Unexpected Purge

Chapter 27 • 1,385 words • 12 min read

The “traitor’s” gaze gradually grew vacant; the Everlife Society had lost another core member, gaining an extraordinary living corpse in their stead.

This scene had repeated itself several times within a single week.

Because the “traitor” had hidden themselves so deeply, the elder could never unearth concrete evidence, forced instead to chase shadows and err on the side of ruthless elimination.

Balin could only tacitly approve of such actions; their enemy was a divine favor recipient, and no amount of caution could be deemed excessive.

Following this extensive purge within the cult, the two men despairingly discovered that the already understaffed church was now even more stretched, with many operations grinding to a halt.

The development speed of new drugs was halved.

The original plan to deploy drugs in the city had to be postponed.

Yodel could never have imagined that after all his confrontations with the Everlife Society, where he had achieved precisely zero results, the greatest damage inflicted upon the Everlife Society would ultimately come from within their own ranks.

As for the source of this conflict—the God of Death—she sat upon her throne, gazing at the ** in her hand, lost in contemplation.

Ellis Aven, Cause of Death: Framed as a traitor due to Yodel’s interference, they accepted a drug injection to transform into a living corpse to prove their loyalty, and died.

Julian, Cause of Death: Framed as a traitor due to Yodel’s interference, they were seduced by a female living corpse and infected into a living corpse during **.

Lar Howard, Cause of Death: Framed as a traitor due to Yodel’s interference, they made a desperate attempt to assassinate Balin, the leader of the Everlife Society, but were killed in retaliation.

Cole Ross, Cause of Death: Because of Yodel…

…

Watching the death list of nearly a hundred people, the God of Death took a deep breath:

“Damn impressive…”

‘Had her chosen divine candidate selection been a little too brilliant?’

‘In just one short week, he had decimated a quarter of the Everlife Society, and nearly completed the assassination mission.’

‘Just look at this killing efficiency.’

‘Previously, when Yodel claimed he had a lead but hadn’t yet acted, the God of Death had thought he was merely putting on a brave front, perhaps facing insurmountable difficulties, to the point where she was even considering assigning Yodel a different task.’

‘Now, it seemed she had worried for nothing.’

‘Truly worthy of being her chosen one.’

Lightly biting her feathered pen with her pearly teeth, the God of Death’s thoughts began to wander.

Although she had lived for untold years and was long adept at her duties, this was the first time she had a believer…

Just as Yodel sought to maximize her favor, she, too, was exploring how to interact with her chosen divine candidate.

‘At a time like this, with her chosen one working so efficiently, shouldn’t she offer Yodel some reward as encouragement?’

‘How did other deities handle such situations?’

‘Hmm… Regardless, giving employees benefits could never be wrong, could it?’

With this thought in mind, the God of Death plucked a strand of silver hair from her head.

With a gentle breath, the silver strand transformed into a white butterfly, which then traversed the barrier between the spirit world and the mortal realm, alighting upon Yodel’s shoulder.

“Yodel, are you free right now? I need to speak with you about your mission.”

A moment later, the God of Death saw a dejected Yodel within the grand hall.

‘How could Yodel be happy?’

‘It had been a full week since the bald man was killed, and the Everlife Society had seemingly vanished into thin air.’

‘The church, Minkton, and he himself had searched every inch of the Westin District, yet found not a single clue.’

‘Nearly half the time limit for the assassination mission had passed, and he was still utterly at a loss.’

‘And just then, his boss had said she needed to speak with him about work-related matters…’

If this were his previous life, Yodel would already be consumed by anxiety and dread.

Yet, with the God of Death, his predominant feeling was one of guilt.

‘Back when he worked for unscrupulous bosses, if he couldn’t complete a task, Yodel could at least console himself with the thought, “Why should I try so hard for just a few hundred bucks?”‘

‘But with the God of Death, he hadn’t accomplished a single thing, despite his boss promoting him and bestowing various abilities; in the end, he had still achieved nothing.’

‘He decided to confess his shortcomings proactively.’

“My apologies, Esteemed God of Death… I have failed to live up to your expectations… The mission to assassinate the leader of the Everlife Society… is progressing slowly… I am not certain I can complete it.”

Having said his piece, Yodel resolved to accept whatever punishment followed with an open heart.

Upon hearing Yodel’s words, the God of Death’s lips twitched several times, and her inner monologue shifted into a sarcastic mode.

‘Yodel, you’re more like a God of Death than I am! You’ve caused a hundred deaths in a week, and you call that slow progress? How fast would your killing efficiency need to be to satisfy you?’

‘However… his expression seems a bit off.’

The God of Death was far more astute than Yelica, and quickly conceived a possibility:

‘Could Yodel truly be unaware that a large number of people from the Everlife Society had died?’

She first glanced at the numbers above Yodel’s head.

0/1/0

Indeed, although Yodel was the catalyst for the great purge, he hadn’t directly participated in the execution of the “traitors,” which was why his assist count remained at zero.

In other words, from Yodel’s perspective, he hadn’t inflicted any damage upon the Everlife Society, hence his profound dejection.

‘A believer feeling low and lost—what an opportune moment for her, as a deity, to lend a helping hand and foster a friendly relationship with her devotee!’

“Hehe, why don’t you take a look at this first…?” The God of Death, smiling, handed the death list to Yodel.

“What is this?” Yodel took it, and before he even finished reading the first line, his eyes slowly widened.

His current mood was akin to someone who, after scoring dead last on an exam, was suddenly told that the scores had been recorded in reverse, and they were actually first!

Especially upon seeing the entry about Balin almost being assassinated, Yodel’s heart gave a violent lurch; he almost thought his mission was already complete.

Seeing the joy gradually surface on Yodel’s face, the God of Death knew she hadn’t guessed wrong; Yodel truly had no idea what had transpired within the Everlife Society.

She hopped from her throne to the floor, walked over to Yodel’s side, and leaned in to look at the list with him.

Then, she turned back and teased Yodel:

“How about it? Do you still think progress is slow? If you killed a little more, I could even take a day off myself…”

“But isn’t my mission to kill the leader? Do killing ordinary members count as work results?”

The God of Death extended her index finger and wagged it.

“I’m going to kill off this batch of Everlife Society members sooner or later anyway; I just thought it would be too difficult for you to take on hundreds alone, so I only asked you to kill the leader.

“Now it seems you’ve done work beyond your normal duties, helping me alleviate pressure, so you rightfully deserve overtime pay.”

“Tell me, what reward do you want this time?”

“This, wouldn’t it be inappropriate?”

Yodel felt the reward was a bit too hot to handle.

“This can only be considered a fluke; the deaths of so many cultists were not an outcome I intentionally caused, and they all died by their own infighting, so it has little to do with me.”

The God of Death chuckled.

“Alright, if you don’t want it, I’ll just send this overtime reward to the Everlife Society, to mock… no, to encourage them to kill themselves off completely.”

“Hey, hey, hey, no, don’t! I want it, I want it…”
