The Terrifying Calculations of a Slow Healer

Chapter 27 • 1,668 words • 14 min read

Ye Jue addressed the group. “The first BOSS is undoubtedly powerful. Even I need to be exceptionally careful to avoid instant death. Moreover, the aggro system for Abyss difficulty bosses is quite chaotic.”

“While it generally follows the standard aggro system to attack players, there’s always a chance of sudden aggro confusion. At such times, our adaptability will be crucial.”

Lin Shenyue fell silent for a moment. She understood that in such a situation, she might become a liability.

After all, her reaction speed was relatively slow. If the BOSS’s aggro became confused and it attacked her, she would likely be instantly killed before she could react.

After a slight hesitation, Lin Shenyue asked, “Are there any precursors to the BOSS’s aggro confusion?”

Ye Jue nodded. “Of course,” he replied. “Otherwise, how would we even fight the BOSS?”

“When the BOSS’s aggro becomes confused, it will let out a roar and also speak. At that point, everyone besides me needs to be cautious.”

Lin Shenyue hesitated again, then asked, “Does the BOSS have any obvious attack tells?”

Ye Jue chuckled. “Naturally. The first BOSS is Kaira, the blacksmith’s apprentice.”

“As a humanoid BOSS, he will naturally look at his target when attacking, which gives us time to react.”

Empty Night asked, a hint of doubt in his voice, “Even if the BOSS’s aggro is confused, we should still be able to react when it attacks us, right?”

Lin Shenyue shook her head with a wry smile. “That’s true, but my reaction speed is quite slow.”

The other three were visibly surprised. As a healer, a priest typically requires quick reflexes.

High reaction speed ensures the priest’s survival and improves the efficiency of skill casting. While Lin Shenyue’s performance during the previous monster encounters hadn’t been exceptional, it certainly wasn’t poor, and her high healing output more than compensated for any perceived shortcomings.

Lin Shenyue, knowing precisely what they were thinking, said calmly, “I simply employed a pre-emptive prediction technique, anticipating the moment an attack would land to cast my heals.”

“Of course, because my reaction speed isn’t great, my predictions sometimes have slight deviations, but it’s enough to avoid being a burden in combat.”

Lin Shenyue’s words utterly stunned the three. Simple pre-emptive prediction alone wasn’t remarkable; seasoned players often possessed such skills to varying degrees.

However, executing predictions with a slow reaction speed was truly terrifying. It meant calculating the attack trajectory and the time it would take to reach the target the instant the attack was launched, all while compensating for slow reflexes by preparing to cast skills in advance.

With fast reactions, a player would have ample time for calculations. But with slow reactions, calculations had to be performed in an incredibly short window—a feat that seemed horrifyingly difficult.

Divine Realm, unlike previous online games, couldn’t be predicted solely by experience. This implied that the girl before them possessed an astonishing, almost frightening, computational ability.

Empty Night quickly recovered, his first thought to recruit Lin Shenyue into his guild. “Yue’er, would you like to join our guild? We have tons of benefits…”

Before Empty Night could finish, Ye Jue abruptly cut him off. “Go play in the mud, Empty Night! Your Iron Blood Clan is full of big, burly men, suffering from a severe imbalance of yin and yang.”

“Are you trying to flirt with Yue’er by inviting her in?”

A vivid image of a group of men surrounding her, trying to flirt, flashed through Lin Shenyue’s mind, making her shiver violently. “On second thought, no, I won’t be joining.”

Empty Night shot Ye Jue a fierce glare of disdain. He had originally hoped to bring some ‘feminine energy’ to their guild, only for Ye Jue to completely disrupt his plans.

Nevertheless, he said nothing more, knowing full well that even without Ye Jue’s interjection, Lin Shenyue’s chances of joining them were slim.

Ye Jue cut short Empty Night’s silent contempt, stating sternly, “Prepare to engage the monster.”

The expressions of everyone present immediately turned serious. Lin Shenyue observed the leader-like aura steadily emerging from Ye Jue and couldn’t help but feel a touch of melancholy.

‘I can’t achieve that level,’ she thought. Even in her previous life, she had never taken on a leadership role, and it seemed impossible for her to do so in this one, at least for now.

As Lin Shenyue watched Ye Jue sprint towards the BOSS, she reined in her thoughts. She focused her attention on the BOSS’s movements. With a quick gesture, she checked the BOSS’s attributes.

[Fallen Kaira (BOSS)] Level: 5. Magic Attack: 170-180. Health: 6000/6000.

‘Such terrifying attack power,’ she mused. Lin Shenyue’s expression shifted subtly.

It was fortunate they had brought five people to tackle this dungeon; if it were just her and Ye Jue, they would likely be annihilated by the BOSS in short order.

Upon seeing Ye Jue, Fallen Kaira roared, “Insolent mortals, how dare you interrupt my ritual? You shall pay with your lives!”

With that, a magic arrow shot towards Ye Jue. The arrow was incredibly swift, striking Ye Jue before he could even react.

[-163]

Ye Jue’s health plummeted by a third in an instant. Lin Shenyue’s heart tightened as she watched. However, with the aggro not yet stable, she was powerless to assist him.

Ye Jue quickly downed a red potion. He fixed his gaze on the BOSS’s movements. When the BOSS launched its next attack, he skillfully blocked it with his shield, relying on years of experience.

Even so, Ye Jue lost nearly 130 more health points.

Lin Shenyue watched Ye Jue charge forward, yet she found herself unable to help in the slightest. A pang of frustration struck her. ‘Am I truly so useless?’ she wondered.

Ye Jue landed a normal attack followed by an enraged strike on the BOSS, dealing 40 and then 50 damage respectively. He breathed a slight sigh of relief; the BOSS’s defense was still remarkably low.

Lin Shenyue keenly observed Ye Jue’s movements. Her grip on her staff tightened imperceptibly. ‘If Ye Jue dies, we’ll undoubtedly be wiped out,’ she thought.

After two attacks, Ye Jue swiftly circled behind the BOSS. While Abyss-level BOSSes turned quickly, it still took them a moment.

That brief window was enough for Ye Jue to catch his breath.

After Ye Jue attacked the BOSS once more, he was hit by its third attack. His health instantly plummeted to 87 points.

At the same time, Ye Jue shouted, “You can start dealing damage now!”

The instant Ye Jue’s cry rang out, Lin Shenyue unleashed both her Healing Spell and Restoration Spell. She successfully restored half of Ye Jue’s health.

Although her reaction time was limited, having collaborated with Ye Jue for so long, she knew precisely when to cast her skills.

Ye Jue’s expression grew subtly serious. ‘The BOSS’s damage output was too high; Lin Shenyue alone wouldn’t be able to keep him healed.’

‘It seems I’ll have to utilize the terrain,’ he thought. ‘I really did overestimate my own abilities a bit.’

As he dodged, Ye Jue began to survey the surrounding environment. After so many years, he could no longer clearly recall the exact layout of this map.

If not for his frequent visits to forums, where he occasionally stumbled upon map guides posted by new players, he would have long forgotten how to tackle this.

Then, his eyes lit up as he spotted an altar behind the BOSS. The altar was encircled by four tall stone pillars, which could perfectly serve as obstacles to block the BOSS’s skills.

Ye Jue began to run towards the stone pillars. The other three members instinctively ceased their attacks, understanding that this was a critical moment for aggro management.

After enduring another magic arrow, Ye Jue ducked behind a pillar. As the BOSS’s primary aggro target, Kaira furiously pursued him once he was out of sight.

As the BOSS gave chase, Ye Jue began to circle around the stone pillar. The BOSS grew even more enraged after one of its attacks struck the pillar instead of its target.

Lin Shenyue watched Ye Jue and the BOSS circle the pillar, with Ye Jue occasionally landing a quick strike. A faint smile touched her lips.

However, Ye Jue, mid-combat, seemed to sense something, turning his head to glance at Lin Shenyue, and was momentarily stunned.

He only snapped back to reality after taking a harsh blow from the BOSS, quickly resuming his kiting around the pillar.

Lin Shenyue’s lips twitched slightly. ‘Distracted while being chased by a BOSS? He’s lucky his gear is good, or he’d be finished,’ she mused.

Under the combined damage output of the four, the BOSS’s health swiftly dropped to 80%. It was at this point that a change finally occurred.

The BOSS roared, “Insolent mortals, you have angered me! Behold my servants!”

The BOSS slammed its staff heavily onto the ground, and a summoning array instantly materialized. From within the array, several skeleton soldiers crawled out.

While the summoned creatures’ attributes had increased, it was only by about 30%, unlike other monsters whose stats doubled.

Nevertheless, even with Fissure assigned to tank the summoned minions, Lin Shenyue had to divert some of her focus to him, causing Ye Jue’s health to hover precariously around 40%. A single BOSS attack could instantly reduce him to critical health.

Yet, he was promptly pulled back up by Lin Shenyue’s Restoration Spell and his own use of red potions.

Though the process was arduous, they successfully cleared the summoned minions and resumed their assault on the BOSS.

When the BOSS’s health dropped to 60%, it erupted once more. “You insignificant ants, do you truly believe hiding will save you? Face the judgment of darkness!”

Ye Jue’s expression changed. “The BOSS’s aggro is confused! Be careful!”

As Lin Shenyue saw the BOSS turn its head and look directly at her, a chill ran down her spine. ‘Did I just win the lottery?’ she wondered, a grim humor in her thought.
