The city of S was dappled with orange neon lights.

Winter nights always arrived in a rush.

Bai Sha, alone, was genuinely on a call.

“Coach? No, no, I’m really not suitable. Oh, please don’t try to persuade me, I truly won’t go.”

“My voice? No, I’m not sick. Alright, see you next time.”

Bai Sha opened WeChat and sent a message to Zhou Haochen.

“Why aren’t you back yet?”

Zhou Haochen replied with a photo.

It showed Zhou Yuying riding a coin-operated kiddie ride, a candied hawthorn skewer in her hand, her mouth wide with laughter.

“We’ll be back soon.”

Bai Sha smiled as she turned off her phone’s screen, then suddenly realized something was amiss.

‘What do you mean, ‘we’ll be back’? This isn’t Zhou Haochen’s home,’ she thought.

She cooked a few home-style dishes, a treat for the child’s father who had spent the entire afternoon looking after their daughter.

It had been a long time since Bai Sha had cooked.

She only cooked for herself during her youth training days, eating two meals at once to save money.

Once she secured a starting position, it was all takeout and cafeteria food.

Firstly, she wasn’t short on money.

Secondly, she lacked the time.

However, once Zhou Yuying arrived, and perhaps due to her parents’ genes, she initially ordered takeout for the child, and both of them were perfectly happy.

Yet, the more videos she scrolled through, the more unhealthy she found takeout food to be.

Consequently, she picked up her cooking skills once more.

“Do you have a car? Do you want me to pick you up?”

Zhou Haochen replied with another photo: a dignified Yadea electric scooter.

“I have a Yadea; I wouldn’t trade it for a BMW.”

“Alright, be safe on the road.”

Bai Sha took off her apron and walked into the bathroom.

She picked up the hair tie she’d bought for their little one and gathered her own hair.

She turned sideways, tilted her head slightly, her upper teeth gently biting her lip, her gaze faintly dazed.

‘Damn, why do I feel like my pectoral muscles have developed too?’

Wearing only a sweater at home, a faint undulation was indeed visible.

‘No, I need to keep my distance from him.’

‘The only thing that can stab me from behind is a knife!’

A click echoed.

“We’re back!” Zhou Yuying exclaimed, bouncing in after changing her shoes.

Bai Sha emerged from the bathroom, squatted down to kiss their little one, then retrieved a pair of slippers from the shoe cabinet.

“I bought them this afternoon, new shoes.”

Zhou Hao (TL Note: This is an error in the original text, it should be Zhou Haochen.) seemed a little reserved.

“I hope I’m not disturbing you.”

“Not at all.”

Bai Sha turned and saw Zhou Yuying already seated on the sofa, clutching the remote control.

“No TV, it’s dinner time!”

Zhou Yuying immediately put it down, then hopped into the kitchen.

Bai Sha led Zhou Haochen.

“She didn’t cause any trouble this afternoon, did she?”

Zhou Haochen touched his nose as he replied, “Uh… no, she was quite obedient.”

“Then I understand.”

Being short, Zhou Yuying had arrived in the kitchen early and could only gaze longingly at the rice cooker.

The child’s father was a guest, so Bai Sha served three bowls of rice consecutively, then pulled a large bottle of fruit pulp orange juice from the fridge.

For three people and a child, Bai Sha prepared three dishes: scrambled eggs with tomatoes, stir-fried pork with chili, and braised pork.

She also made a seaweed and egg drop soup.

“I’m from Jiangxi Province (TL Note: ‘Gan Province’ refers to Jiangxi Province). This stir-fried pork might be a bit spicy.”

Zhou Haochen was from the north; she wondered if he could handle spice.

“My roommate is from Sichuan Province (TL Note: ‘Chuan Province’ refers to Sichuan Province), and we often go out to eat.”

“When it comes to spicy food, I’m definitely not bad!” Zhou Haochen declared, thumping his chest confidently.

He seemed unaware, however, that Sichuan’s famous numbing spice was merely a ‘mechanism monster’ (TL Note: A gaming term implying a challenge that relies on specific tactics rather than raw power).

Hunan and Jiangxi provinces, on the other hand, were the ‘pure numerical kings’ (TL Note: A gaming term implying a challenge that relies on overwhelming raw power/spice level).

Zhou Haochen took a few bites, initially unfazed.

“See? I told you I’m good with spice; this isn’t even that spicy.”

As the aftertaste kicked in, however, he began to break into a cold sweat, downing cup after cup of fruit pulp orange juice.

Finally, Zhou Haochen’s lips were fiery red, and he incessantly stuck out his tongue.

“No way, why is the aftertaste so intense?!” he gasped.

His obedient daughter, feeling sorry for her father, watched as steam seemed to rise from his head, and she valiantly fanned him with her small hands.

Bai Sha, meanwhile, clutched her stomach, laughing uncontrollably.

“Hahaha… Zhou… Zhou Haochen, do you know there are two things from Jiangxi Province that outsiders should never touch?”

Zhou Haochen asked, panting, “Wh-what?”

Bai Sha straightened her posture and explained with all seriousness, “First, there’s the homemade wine brewed by locals, which supposedly isn’t very strong.

“Second, there are chilies that locals claim aren’t very spicy.”

“Why?”

“Yeah, why, Mama?”

Bai Sha shrugged like a bear (TL Note: An emoticon-like description, ‘little bear shrugging’).

“The wine is indeed homemade, and its alcohol content is genuinely unknown, but apart from rice wine, it’s usually not low.”

“As for the chilies, we’ve eaten spicy food since childhood, so it seems we’ve become desensitized to the spiciness.”

Zhou Haochen turned his head to his obedient daughter.

“Xiao Ying, can you eat spicy food?”

Zhou Yuying, seeing her father’s half-dead state, quickly shook her head.

“Baby won’t eat it, Baby won’t snatch Papa’s!”

“Actually, it’s not that bad, is it?!”

Father and daughter then witnessed a shocking scene.

Bai Sha, mixing the stir-fried pork with chili into her rice, devoured it with gusto, even emitting sounds of satisfaction.

The two of them waited for a long time, but Bai Sha showed no strange reaction, merely taking a sip of her drink.

“Mama is so scary!” the little one exclaimed in shock.

Before, Mama just ate it by herself, but now with Papa as a comparison, the little one thought Mama was a superhero!

“Indeed, quite scary,” Zhou Haochen said, wiping away a cold sweat.

He instantly decided that his own formidable child was nothing in comparison.

After dinner, Zhou Haochen insisted on washing the dishes.

Bai Sha didn’t argue, reasoning that if they were truly to live together in the future, household chores would undoubtedly be shared.

“Mama! Phone!” the little one cried, hugging Bai Sha’s thigh, her black pearl-like eyes blinking.

Bai Sha sighed helplessly.

“Here, but only for an hour.”

Zhou Haochen, who was washing dishes, watched her, seemingly wanting to say something but holding back.

After Zhou Yuying left, Bai Sha leaned against the kitchen doorframe, making desultory conversation with the child’s father.

“What did you study?”

“Computer science.”

“Working with computers? My job is too.”

“Something like that?!”

“I’m a bit older and have some connections.”

“Besides, I’ve fallen out with my family and am the head of my own household.”

“Xiao Yu is starting kindergarten next year; would it be alright to register her under my household first?”

“You’ve been taking care of her all this time; it’s only right.”

There weren’t many dishes for three people, and Zhou Haochen finished them in no time.

Noticing Zhou Haochen’s repeated hesitation, Bai Sha asked, “Is something on your mind?”

Zhou Haochen glanced at the little one in the living room, then leaned closer to Bai Sha’s ear.

“This afternoon, she said you allowed her an hour on the phone, so I gave it to her,” he whispered.

The anticipated volcanic eruption did not occur.

Bai Sha smoothed the hair by her ear and replied with a small smile:

“Just remember for next time.”

“Today, she finally got to see her longed-for father, so let her be happy for now.”

“But next time! If you take her out to play, absolutely, positively no phone time.”

“I don’t know how I’ll educate her in the future, but she’s so young, she absolutely cannot develop an internet addiction!”

Zhou Haochen nodded repeatedly in agreement.

“Exactly! I support that.”

In the entryway, Zhou Yuying clung to her father, making a sweet, drawn-out farewell.

After setting her down, Bai Sha said, “I’ll walk you downstairs.”

Zhou Yuying’s eyes lit up.

“You stay home, it’s cold downstairs.”

Her face immediately fell.

“Oh.”

Downstairs, in front of the bike shed, Zhou Haochen and Bai Sha stood facing each other.

The dim streetlights cast a hazy glow over the scene, and a biting wind began to stir.

Zhou Haochen retrieved a gift box from beneath the seat of his electric scooter and handed it to Bai Sha.

“I originally planned to give this to you today. Xiao Yu mentioned your birthday is coming up soon, but I thought I’d pick out something else as well.”

Bai Sha felt a touch of novelty; this was the first gift she’d received that wasn’t from a fan.

Opening it, she found a mottled gray and white scarf.

“Why are you giving me a gift on the first day we meet?” she asked.

Zhou Haochen rubbed his nose.

“Thank you for telling me the news that I’m a father.”

“I know nothing about Xiao Yu or you right now, but I’ll do my best to fulfill this role.”

“You two, mother and daughter, can tell me any needs you have.”

Bai Sha rose slightly on her tiptoes, patted the young man’s shoulder, and wrapped the scarf around her neck.

She gave him a thumbs-up.

“It’s pretty cool to grow for the sake of others.”

Zhou Haochen shook his head.

“You are not strangers.”
