“Students, I’ll take a few minutes of your time for a brief class meeting to explain some key points about the anti-fraud measures the school has recently communicated…”
Standing at the podium, Shen Zhishu droned on like a true teacher.
Pei Xingyan let out a sigh of relief, then leaned over his desk, idly twirling his pen.
He had been afraid Shen Zhishu was specifically looking for him.
‘Hmph,’ Pei Xingyan thought, feeling a pang of self-consciousness the instant the idea surfaced.
‘He certainly didn’t believe he shared any connection with Shen Zhishu beyond a simple acquaintance.’
Despite the peculiar flashes of familiarity, Pei Xingyan dismissed them as mere illusions.
If he were to consistently treat such vague sensations as reality, he might very well make a grave mistake.
“Baby…”
Su Sansan, resting her chin on the desk, snuck closer at the first opportunity.
She had completely discarded her earlier promise of no intimate physical contact—a detail she had, in fact, deliberately overlooked since their last meeting—and was now actively seeking facial proximity.
Filled with delight, she exhaled softly into Pei Xingyan’s ear, “Baby…”
Su Sansan said nothing else, merely repeating, “Baby, baby,” until the words themselves seemed to send her into a joyous fit, her feet fluttering wildly against the floor.
Fortunately, she was wearing a full JK uniform today, complete with soft-soled uniform shoes, or the noise would surely have drawn the displeased gaze of Teacher Shen from the front row.
Pei Xingyan had no idea what had upset Shen Zhishu, but he could clearly see her profound displeasure.
He certainly had no desire to experience her eyes again, which bore an uncanny resemblance to Ye Ziwei’s when she harbored murderous intent.
He hastily reached to press down on Su Sansan’s legs, inadvertently avoiding her skirt, which had fluttered upwards with her movements.
Instead, his hand landed on her smooth, delicate skin, where he even felt a patch of soft fabric.
He could easily guess what that was.
Su Sansan’s pupils quivered, and she instantly settled down.
Her two long, straight legs pressed quietly against the stool, utterly motionless.
“Baby…”
Her voice trembled as her hand tugged at Pei Xingyan’s sleeve.
“This isn’t good here… Someone… will see us…”
Pei Xingyan’s mind buzzed, and with the last vestiges of his reason, he moved his hand away.
He offered the girl a gentle smile before burying his head in his arms.
‘He felt his life was steadily veering towards a criminal path,’ he thought.
‘Given this, Su Sansan certainly wouldn’t let him off the hook.’
Thankfully, she still considered herself his “girlfriend”.
Otherwise, a single shout just now would have landed him at the police station for an afternoon tea, and perhaps even in the same prison cell as his father after sentencing.
He subtly glanced sideways, noticing Su Sansan had also become despondent, mirroring his posture with her head buried in her arms.
‘After all, it’s only natural for a girl to feel shy after such an incident,’ he mused.
Pei Xingyan, thinking this, couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, the girl wasn’t so unhinged as to contemplate or desire such an act with him, and her sense of shame remained relatively normal.
‘Normal was good; normal meant there was still hope for salvation.’
‘He already seemed to have too many abnormal girls around him; any more, and he truly didn’t know what he would do—’
“Pei Xingyan.”
A frigid female voice echoed above his head, carrying a distinct hint of menace.
Pei Xingyan offered a resigned smile, muttering internally, ‘Well, I’m utterly screwed now.’
He slowly lifted his head, looking up, and met Shen Zhishu’s unfriendly gaze head-on.
The aloof female professor now seemed even colder, her gaze almost capable of freezing him solid.
Pei Xingyan had no idea how he had managed to cross this formidable figure.
He could only offer an ingratiating smile, slowly rising to his feet as a sign of respect.
“Hello, Teacher?”
“Teacher is not good,” Shen Zhishu replied coldly, her displeasure palpably tripled.
“Why aren’t you listening properly?”
‘Pei Xingyan inwardly winced.’
‘He could understand a teacher being angry about a student not listening, but why did he vaguely detect a hint of grievance in her tone?’
‘What reason did she have to feel aggrieved?’
‘Having served as a substitute counselor for so long, didn’t she know that class meetings were the most annoying things?’
‘Wouldn’t it have been better to just half-heartedly get through it?’
‘And with such a prestigious title as a scholar and professor, why wasn’t she finding ways to conduct research and secure more funding, instead of playing pretend with a bunch of undergraduates?’
Despite these thoughts, he couldn’t possibly voice them all.
He merely bowed repeatedly, profusely apologizing.
He continued to smile at Shen Zhishu, when unexpectedly, the woman who had appeared to harbor such deep resentment suddenly failed to control the corners of her lips.
From an angle visible only to him, she silently broke into a sweet smile.
Her smile was incredibly sweet, making one wonder if her previous sour expression had merely been an act.
Shen Zhishu waved her hand, signaling to drop the matter.
She then turned to bid farewell to the class, returning the lesson to the subject teacher.
Pei Xingyan, utterly bewildered, sank back into his seat.
He found himself increasingly unable to comprehend this teacher.
“Wait.”
Before his heart could fully settle, Shen Zhishu executed a sudden about-face.
She approached Pei Xingyan, craning her neck to peer at the girl beside him.
“Do we have such a person in our class?” Shen Zhishu asked with a smile.
“She looks quite unfamiliar, doesn’t she?”
Pei Xingyan’s long-honed detection radar blared incessantly.
Her smile held no genuine happiness, nor any trace of kindness; it was merely a facade to conceal the fierce expression beneath.
He waved his hand dismissively, then directly laid a hand on Shen Zhishu to push her gently.
“You must be mistaken,” he quickly interjected.
“This is a student from our class… Uh… I actually have something I wanted to ask you, perhaps we could step outside for a moment?”
Shen Zhishu offered no resistance, allowing him to press on her shoulder, yet her eyes remained fixed on Su Sansan.
Her gaze grew increasingly perplexed and hostile.
Ultimately, however, she followed Pei Xingyan out of the classroom.
‘Pei Xingyan had experienced one twist after another,’ he thought.
‘He felt he needed to hang a traditional Chinese almanac (TL Note: 黄历, huánglì, a daily guide to auspicious and inauspicious activities) by his bedside from now on, and check it diligently before leaving home, or his luck would simply be too terrible!’
‘He simply couldn’t handle it anymore!’
Pei Xingyan slowly exhaled, pushing Shen Zhishu step by step under the watchful eyes of the entire class and the subject teacher.
Fortunately, Shen Zhishu did not erupt again, and proved surprisingly compliant.
Just as they reached the doorway, and he believed everything was finally safe, a clear, melodious shout shattered all his hopes.
“Baby! Where are you going?”
Su Sansan’s voice was not loud; it was almost a whisper.
Yet, the classroom was terrifyingly silent, with the onlookers even holding their breath.
Not just a sentence, but a pin dropping to the floor would have been distinctly audible.
Pei Xingyan turned to look, only to see Su Sansan, her face etched with alarm, rising and rushing towards him.
He stiffly turned back, and in that instant, Shen Zhishu, who had remained silent and unresponsive, had her eyebrows sharply furrowed.
She seized his hand with a swift backhand grip, pulling him out of the classroom.
