“I feel guilty.”

Wen Xiaoran raised a brow, intrigued. “Why?”

Yan Yi racked her brain and said half-truthfully, “I made you angry. I was going to apologize… but you came to me first. I thought—”

He stepped closer, his tall figure casting a shadow over her. “You thought what?”

She lowered her head. “I thought you were still angry… and came to trouble me.”

He was momentarily speechless.

“In your eyes, am I that petty?”

“No!” she quickly denied. “I just knew I said something wrong… so I overthought it. I know what kind of person you are.”

He was clearly pleased, though he hid it well. “Then tell me—what kind of person am I?”

Yan Yi looked up at him, inwardly sighing.

This… was supposed to be the ultimate villain?

When she got back to the real world, she’d beg the author to rewrite him as the most self-absorbed villain instead.

Without missing a beat, she said, “You’re handsome—tall, broad-shouldered, with a perfect figure, smooth skin, great to touch, soft lips…”

“Enough.” He cut her off, slightly embarrassed. “Where did you learn to speak like this?”

“From storybooks. But—”

He couldn’t help asking, “But what?”

She smiled. “It’s all true.”

He studied her face, trying to judge her sincerity.

“Why aren’t you saying anything?” she asked, tilting her head. “Are you angry?”

“I’m not.”

“Even when I said you were jealous?”

He wasn’t angry—just embarrassed.

Sitting down, he said casually, “When have I ever held a grudge against you?”

That was true.

No matter how she teased or deceived him, he never truly got angry.

Perhaps… she was never a threat to him.

Suddenly, she asked seriously, “Even if I did something wrong—you wouldn’t be angry?”

“What kind of wrong?”

She leaned forward. “If I deceived you and left you with nothing… would you be angry?”

“As long as it’s not serious, I wouldn’t care.”

Truly magnanimous—for a ruler of the demon realm.

Her gaze drifted downward—then suddenly she jumped up.

“Don’t move!”

She rushed to wipe the table.

He was startled. “What happened?”

“The desk wasn’t clean!” she said quickly, trying to block him.

But he had already touched the surface.

Then raised his hand to look at it.

“You used a talisman?”

Her heart shot to her throat.

After all that effort—she’d still been exposed.

She forced herself to speak calmly.

“You told me not to contact my cousin. But I didn’t want my family to worry… so I sent one letter, just to say I’d be traveling with my master.”

She wiped the desk again and said cautiously, “Just ordinary greetings. If you want to read it, you can.”

“I don’t pry into others’ privacy,” he said. “Though you don’t seem willing.”

“If you insist, I won’t refuse,” she replied stiffly.

“That’s enough.” He tapped the desk. “Sit.”

She obeyed, noticing he didn’t seem angry.

“Why did you come so late?” she asked carefully.

“I’ll be leaving for a short trip. Just came to inform you.”

She nodded.

“Only a few days.”

Then she smiled. “I’ll miss you.”

Later—

Under her encouragement, the fox had begun trying to transform.

Yan Yi approached excitedly, but it backed away nervously.

“Don’t you recognize me?” she asked softly.

“Meow—”

“Don’t worry. Your power isn’t fully stable yet.”

The fox nuzzled her hand in response.

Suddenly—

Footsteps sounded outside.

The fox immediately became alert and leapt out the window.

Yan Yi chased after it.

At the courtyard gate, she saw it perched on the wall, scanning the surroundings.

Everything was quiet.

“Come back!”

But it jumped down and ran off.

She followed quickly—

And soon spotted someone rushing toward her.

“Qiong Jiu?”

“Miss Yan—His Excellency is injured. I’m fetching medicine!”

“When did he return? Is it serious?”

“I’m not sure… but it didn’t look good.”

Yan Yi spotted the fox returning from the grass and finally relaxed.

“I’ll come with you.”

On the way, Qiong Jiu said softly, “I’m sorry… about Lu Qin.”

Yan Yi shook her head. “I never blamed you.”

Back at the bedchamber—

The physician worked seriously.

“Is he badly hurt?” Yan Yi asked.

“His vital essence hasn’t recovered—and now he’s injured again. It’s not good.”

Her breath caught.

She walked closer to the bed.

Under the dim light, Wen Xiaoran looked pale and fragile.

His long lashes cast shadows.

For once, he didn’t look terrifying—

But gentle.

She reached out and touched his face.

Warm.

Alive.

Relief flooded her.

Her fingers traced his features… lingering at his lips.

Something stirred inside her.

Unable to resist—

She leaned down and kissed him.

Their lips met.

A quiet sense of satisfaction filled her.

She adjusted his clothes and stepped back.

His lashes fluttered—

Then he opened his eyes, staring at her.

Her heart nearly stopped.

“Master! He’s awake!” she shouted.

The physician sighed.

“He was just sleeping.”

Yan Yi stared at him, stunned.

“Just… sleeping?”

Wen Xiaoran’s low voice followed—

“You thought I was unconscious… and took advantage?”
