I decided to take a break from streaming tomorrow.
You might ask, “Does it make sense to take a break when you’re not even making proper money?” But, isn’t it okay to take a day off? There’s a lot I need to think about.
Well, as soon as I posted the notice on the gallery, a flood of insults and various reactions started pouring in, but I had no intention of changing my decision.
And as expected, the gallery started burning up like crazy.
If there are 20 fans, maybe only around 15 actually use the gallery, but the sheer volume of reactions seemed way more than just 15 people.
Thanks to that, the gallery was turning into a mess… but well, that’s something the gallery mods will take care of.
That’s why I chose them—unpaid mods are basically unpaid slaves.
“Hmm….”
I leaned back in my chair and stared at the ceiling. A sigh escaped me as a bunch of thoughts flooded my mind.
Of course, the first thought was money.
I need to make money.
A lot of money.
For now, I’m barely scraping by.
But I can’t live my whole life on a monthly income of 500,000 won (~$400).
Now that I’m able to enjoy modern conveniences again, I don’t want to live a life where I have to tremble just to buy a chicken, or sigh every time I look at my bank account.
But the problem is, I don’t see a way forward.
I have no idea how I can get out of my current situation; there doesn’t seem to be a clear answer.
Most part-time jobs reject me during the document screening phase, and even if I manage to get to the interview, it doesn’t lead anywhere.
In the end, the only thing I can rely on right now is streaming.
So, my stream needs more viewers, and for that to happen, I need to give viewers a ‘reason to watch my stream.’
But how exactly do I create that reason?
Since the day I decided to start streaming, I’ve watched tons of other streams whenever I had free time.
From the so-called “big names” to the small, “irrelevant” streams.
And while watching them, I honestly couldn’t figure out what was different.
Whether they were big-name streams or small ones, I thought they were all fun.
So why are they divided into big and small streamers?
There must be differences, of course.
But I don’t know what the difference is.
I need to figure it out so my stream can grow too.
…Well, there’s one thing I definitely realized through today’s stream.
When doing a stream like today, where I’m just chatting with viewers without any specific content — the so-called “Just Chatting” streams — I need a proper screen for that.
I can’t just keep using a plain black screen forever, after all.
But how should I change it?
The best way would obviously be to use a camera, but like I said during the stream, I have no plans to use a camera for now.
There are plenty of streamers who don’t turn on their cameras, so there’s no reason for me to worry about it.
“Hmmm…”
And those kinds of streams usually have some kind of image on the screen… Should I do it that way too?
If that’s the case, what kind of image should I use?
I noticed some of them have images that move around.
…At times like this, there’s only one solution.
[Interrogator: Is Tuni here?]
What a perfect solution.
[Tuni: Sorry, I’m streaming right now. Can we talk later?]
[Interrogator: Oh, I see. Got it.]
Mission failed.
…Well, I’m not a kid.
I can figure things out on my own if I don’t know something.
So, I started watching streams on Lime and gathering information from the community.
“…Vtuber?”
After spending almost two hours researching, I found out that the “moving image” I saw during those streams is part of a field called Vtubing.
It seems to have originated in Japan, and the idea is to create a character with a backstory, and the streamer acts according to that character while streaming.
In simple terms, it’s like role-playing an anime character during the stream.
[Sniff… I, Nacchan. We always, every time… Sniff… Swear, ‘Next time, I’ll never play a horror game again!’… But why do we always end up like this…? Sniff…]
[Isn’t that something you should ask Hikarin and Suzuha, not me?]
[Definitely… AHHHHHHH!]
[AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!]
[AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!]
[WAAAAAHHH…!!!]
As I watched videos of the most popular Vtubers, I made a decision.
I’m going to become a Vtuber.
Well, this video is from a Japanese Vtuber… But when I searched for Vtubers on OnTube, this was the top result.
[Incoming call from Tuni]
[X]
Anyway, as I was thinking about this, Tuni called me on Misscord after her stream ended.
“Ah, hello…”
[Yes. Did you try to reach me, Lene? Sorry, I was streaming earlier.]
To be honest, when I contacted her earlier, I had a brief thought like, ‘Could Tuni be avoiding me?’ But luckily, it didn’t seem like that at all..
…Wouldn’t Bora have said something, thinking strange thoughts again?
But I can’t help it because I’m always the one receiving help from Tuni.
Plus, Tuni actually met me in person…
Basically, I’ve got a negative mindset when it comes to relationships.
“Uh… I’m really sorry for contacting you so suddenly, especially when you might be streaming…”
[Oh, it’s fine. I did tell you it was okay to reach out anytime.]
“Th-Thank you… Um, I’ve made a decision? And I wanted to talk about it.”
[Oh, yes, of course.]
“Well… I’m thinking about trying to become a VTuber.”
[…A VTuber? You, Lene?]
“Uh, yes.”
Tuni raised her voice, sounding genuinely surprised at my words.
An unsettling feeling started to rise within me at her unusual reaction.
“W-Wait, is there something weird about it…?”
Maybe there’s a reason Tuni is reacting this way.
I only know the basics, so there could be something I’m unaware of.
[Oh no, it’s not that at all… It’s just… it’s surprising to hear that Lene is interested in becoming a VTuber.]
“Huh? Why is that?”
Is there really something surprising?
I actually think it suits me perfectly.
My experiences are something ordinary people can never understand.
So, my actions that stem from those experiences probably seem strange to others.
But if I present that as part of my VTuber persona?
I could even use it as content for streaming.
[No, no. Anyway, so you’re really thinking about becoming a VTuber…?]
“Yes. From what I’ve looked into, it seems like a good fit.”
[…Wow. Is wasting talent a hobby of yours…?]
“Sorry?”
[Oh, nothing. Um… now that I think about it, it does seem like a good idea. Your… eccentricities could actually become content.]
As expected, Tuni gets it.
She understands exactly why I’m making this choice.
Of course, there’s another reason too. And it’s a very important one.
“And I found out that some male VTubers use female avatars on purpose. If I do that, it wouldn’t be a problem when I reveal I’m actually a guy.”
That would definitely make it easier to achieve my grand plan.
[…You still haven’t given up on that, huh?]
“…No.”
Tuni’s tone sounded like she was asking if I was being stupid, which made me shrink a little, but I still stood my ground.
Someday, Tuni will definitely acknowledge that I was right.
・Definitely, right?
[…Well, if that’s what you want to do, I don’t really have a reason to stop you. And VTubers do have a surprisingly loyal audience, so it could help you grow your channel.]
Hearing Tuni say that reassured me that my plan was flawless…
[But there is one problem, Lene.]
“……What? What’s the problem?”
[…Lene, if you’re going to become a VTuber, you obviously need drawings or illustrations to use for your streams, right?]
“That’s… true?”
[There’s a technical term for that, they call it a ‘base illustration’ (판떼기)… Do you know how much those cost?]
Cost?
I…
never really thought about that.
But at most, it should only be around 50,000 won….
[It’s at least 500,000 won.]
“…What?”
[If you want proper quality, it’ll easily go over a million won.]
“…What?”
[And there’s also this technology called Live2D that makes the illustration move. If you include that, it’ll cost even more.]
Hearing that from Tuni, I thought about the amount of money currently in my bank account.
“…I’ll give up.”
[That might be for the best.]
“Yeah…”
I calmly reached a conclusion.
