The bell for class rang once more, but Lin Yi remained slumped listlessly on his desk.
As he listened to the teacher’s lecture, Lin Yi felt his head splitting. Nevertheless, he forced himself to endure, scribbling a few notes in his textbook.
Just as he finally made it to the end of class and was about to nap, Li Yan roused him.
“Hey, Brother Lin, that game I told you about is out. Want to hop online tonight and give it a try?”
“Oh, right, right…”
Lin Yi replied perfunctorily, then shifted his position, turning to lie in a different direction. Seeing Lin Yi’s dispirited state, Li Yan offered a peculiar grin.
“Looking at you, it seems like you’ve been completely drained, hasn’t it?”
“Huh? What on earth are you thinking?”
“Hm? I haven’t even said anything yet, why are you reacting so strongly? Did you misunderstand?”
“Go on, scram. I wonder whose mind is full of nothing but dirty thoughts.”
Li Yan chuckled sheepishly, then asked with a straight face.
“Brother Lin, are you going to play or not? It’s Friday, you know. Don’t waste all that free time.”
Lin Yi, annoyed by his persistence, pulled a long face and met Li Yan’s gaze.
“We’ll see. I need to sleep.”
Seeing Lin Yi’s demeanor, Li Yan, fearing a potential beating, quietly retreated.
Lin Yi slumped back onto his desk, but before his eyes could even close, the class bell chimed again.
‘Damn it, this is infuriating!’
He hadn’t slept well last night because of the tabby cat at home, and he had been looking forward to catching up on sleep during the break. Now, there was no chance of sleeping a wink.
Lin Yi endured the morning, and after lunch, he returned to the classroom for his midday nap. The moment his head touched the desk, another voice interrupted him.
“Lin Yi, want to play Werewolf?”
The voice belonged to Qin Ruoxue. Lin Yi glanced at her, trying his best to calm his rising irritation, then shook his head.
Lin Yi wouldn’t dare lose his temper in front of Qin Ruoxue. If she were to misunderstand and transform into a yandere, Lin Yi would be utterly doomed.
“Alright then…”
Qin Ruoxue seemed to grasp Lin Yi’s intention, turning to the students playing Werewolf.
“Keep your voices down. If the teacher sees us, we’ll all be in trouble.”
Though she warned them in the teacher’s name, Qin Ruoxue’s true intention was to ensure they didn’t disturb Lin Yi. After speaking, Qin Ruoxue returned to her seat; she hadn’t planned on playing herself.
Li Yan had merely asked her to call Lin Yi over, and she would have only considered joining if Lin Yi had decided to play with them.
Lin Yi, still sprawled on his desk, was naturally unaware of this. All he wanted was a good, long nap. His consciousness slowly drifted, and just as he was about to fall asleep, someone suddenly slammed a hand on a desk.
“Damn it, you’re the Werewolf! I actually thought you were one of the good guys!”
The shout was quite loud, startling Lin Yi and instantly igniting a surge of anger within him. He lifted his head, ready to curse at the group.
Then he saw Qin Ruoxue slam her hand on the table and stride into the middle of the students.
“Can’t you see someone’s trying to sleep? Yelling so loudly will attract the teacher, and I won’t cover for any of you!”
The students instantly fell silent under Qin Ruoxue’s glare. The fire in Lin Yi’s heart gradually subsided as he glanced at the dozen or so students behind him. Each held a small white slip of paper, likely detailing their roles in the Werewolf game.
Lin Yi used to enjoy such games during his school days, but after growing up, he rarely had the opportunity, which diminished his interest considerably.
Shaking his groggy head, he decided not to dwell on it. All he wanted now was a proper nap. Just then, a familiar fragrance wafted into his nostrils.
Lin Yi knew who had arrived without even looking, simply by the scent. Such an expensive shampoo could only belong to Chen Sishi in their entire class.
“Good afternoon, Lin Yi.”
Chen Sishi bounced cheerfully into the seat behind Lin Yi, radiating boundless energy, as if something wonderful had happened.
Lin Yi rubbed his aching head, responding with a sigh.
“Good afternoon, Sishi.”
Tilting her head, Chen Sishi observed Lin Yi for a moment, her smile fading slightly. Her clear, blue eyes gazed intently at him.
“Lin Yi, you don’t look so good.”
“Ah? Really? I probably didn’t rest well last night.”
“Didn’t rest well? Was there a reason?”
Lin Yi pondered, deciding that if he mentioned the cat burrowing into his covers last night, Chen Sishi would likely freak out.
“I had a nightmare last night, and it woke me up in the middle of the night.”
Upon hearing this, Chen Sishi’s brows furrowed sharply.
“A nightmare? I’ve heard nightmares can be caused by problems with your surroundings. How about I come to your place tonight and check it out?”
“Ah? No, that’s really not necessary…”
If Lin Yi allowed Chen Sishi into his home, there was no telling what strange things she might do there.
“I think it’s probably just a coincidence.”
“Hmm… alright then…”
Lin Yi found it odd. Chen Sishi had been persistently asking to visit his home lately. While she didn’t act out if he refused, this behavior felt unusually abnormal.
Lost in thought, Lin Yi carefully recalled the original novel’s plot. During the male and female leads’ relationship, the female lead, Chen Sishi, often visited the male lead’s house.
After they broke up, the male lead’s home mysteriously acquired tiny miniature cameras. It wasn’t until the male lead was imprisoned that he discovered an entire wall covered with photos. These photos included him waking up, and even nude shots after showering.
In short, there were all sorts of candid photos from his daily life. When Lin Yi first read that part, he was genuinely horrified.
‘She’s been so eager to come to my place recently. Could it be to install those miniature cameras?’
He gasped, a cold dread washing over him. Lin Yi secretly resolved never to let Chen Sishi into his rented apartment. The thought of Chen Sishi observing his every move made him feel utterly uncomfortable.
“I won’t disturb your sleep any further. Good afternoon…”
As if concerned Lin Yi might harm his health by staying up late, Chen Sishi fell silent after uttering that sentence.
“Mm…”
He softly hummed in response. At last, he could finally catch some sleep. Slumping back onto his desk, Lin Yi’s consciousness slowly sank. When he opened his eyes again, it was already the first class of the afternoon.
Glancing at his handwritten timetable, Lin Yi decided to sleep through another class. It was music class, and in this world, there was no such thing as a teacher being sick and unable to come to class; whatever lesson was scheduled, that lesson was taught.
A lean male teacher walked to the podium. He surveyed the classroom, cleared his throat, and announced loudly.
“Class is in session!”
Lin Yi flinched, startled, and instinctively lifted his head.
“Stand up!”
“Good day, Teacher!”
“Good afternoon, everyone.”
After the usual formalities, Lin Yi sat back down, resting his head on his desk, intending to snatch a bit more sleep. The teacher didn’t bother with the sleeping students, merely asking blandly.
“Can anyone here sing?”
“Me! I can!”
The moment the teacher spoke, the classroom atmosphere immediately became lively. Lin Yi frowned, a knot of irritation tightening in his chest.
“Come, you, come up and sing a couple of lines.”
The voice belonged to a boy Lin Yi didn’t know well. The instant the student began to sing, it was like a cat hearing nails scrape across a blackboard. Lin Yi’s fur bristled instantly, his amber eyes wide and glaring, as if ready to devour someone.
“Ahem, that student sang with great emotion. Next, I’ll explain how to sing.”
The teacher launched into an eloquent lecture, covering everything related to singing: breath control, various resonances, and fundamental principles. He spoke with such coherence and expertise that he far surpassed any music teacher Lin Yi had encountered before.
As Lin Yi listened, he surprisingly found himself feeling much more awake.
“The reason some people can’t hit high notes is because they haven’t mastered the techniques for high pitches. Firstly, to sing high notes, you need to use nasal resonance. When you vocalize here, it will…”
