“Alright, alright… as payment, I’ll bring you that child.
I don’t understand, what do you want with a lunatic?
She does look decent, but there are plenty of girls better looking than her at school.
There’s a reason Libi picks people to come in… what was her name again?”
That child?
Irene crouched behind the glass, listening silently… and the next name that came out of Harper’s mouth made her instantly stand up.
“Her name is… Rosakaya, right?
That autistic kid.
I’m actually more interested in Sydney, but since you went back on your word once and didn’t bring her to me, I’ll take this one instead.”
Harper shrugged, as if he were discussing goods.
Bang!
A deafening shatter of glass.
Both men were startled by the sound and looked up, only to see a figure fearlessly step over the broken glass with a single punch, ignoring the blood on her body, directly leaping into the room.
Her violet eyes were like those of a demon, and she let out a beast-like roar:
“What the hell are you planning to do to Rosakaya?!”
It’s always like this… always!
Even the tiniest bit of happiness she managed to hold onto, they had to take away from her… why?
Why do they do this?
Just for their own benefit?
They bring endless, hopeless pain to others!
Do they have not even a shred of sympathy?
Are they demons?
Monsters?
Why does humanity breed such filth?
Disgusting monsters, vermin bound for hell, filthy scum…
Irene’s entire face twisted into pure darkness in shadow and agony.
Her hands clutched the VSS tight, finger locked on the trigger, and in the next second she was ready to turn the two of them into sieves.
“Irene?! It’s you?!”
Leighton staggered back in terror, but fell directly to the ground.
His not-yet-stitched wound made him scream in pain.
He hadn’t realized during the robbery, but now, from that distorted roar, he instantly recognized who she was.
And seeing the box hanging from Irene’s waist, combined with the vague silhouette of the robber’s height, he immediately understood most of it.
“Oh? Her sister? Now that’s a surprise.”
Harper, however, showed no sign of nervousness.
He lightly adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, looking with interest at Irene teetering on the edge of frenzy.
Polite and calculated, he raised his hands slightly to show he carried no weapon, and gave her a slight bow:
“Respected Miss Irene, welcome to my humble abode.
Surely… you overheard our conversation just now, didn’t you?
Please don’t misunderstand.
I only know about you because I carefully observe my patients’ family situations and specific illnesses.
As for me, I’m only interested in treating Rosakaya’s mental cond—”
Bang!
A bullet precisely struck Harper’s collar.
His body visibly stiffened, and his smile froze in place.
But strangely, in those sapphire eyes burned a light of growing fascination.
“You think I’d believe you?
What kind of joke is this?
Special treatment?
I don’t mind carrying a murder charge.
After all, I’m sure even my principal doesn’t want this mess exposed, am I right?”
Irene let out a cold laugh.
Did he really take himself for a real doctor?
If this damned beast living on would ever threaten Rosakaya—or even Sydney—she would not hesitate to act.
But right now, she held absolute control.
In force.
In position.
Everything.
She had to know what this wretched trash had done.
She left early, never—no, refused to—go through the entire hard drive’s contents.
The material rivaled the dark web, enough to shatter anyone’s mind.
“If a doctorate in advanced mental research is a joke too, then I doubt there are many truly capable people left in this world, Miss Irene…
And in my eyes, you yourself are of even greater research value than your sister.
Compared to ordinary autism, a lucid madwoman is far more valuable for study.”
“Oh, I haven’t introduced myself.
I am Doctor Harper, specializing in psychiatric research.
Miss Irene, please don’t let yourself fall into blind rage.
You’ll end up in prison, wasting your youth in a dark cell.
Now… be good, hand me the gun.
This isn’t something a child like you should be burdened with.”
He slowly removed his glasses.
His eyes were sapphire blue, like a crystalline lake, gazing at Irene with a gentleness.
The gun…
Yes… why did she even fire?
Irene suddenly felt a wave of tranquility wash over her.
She was just a child—why must she bear such a cruel fate and such heavy responsibility?
Why not just run away with Utoya and her sister…?
