The miserable howling of the wolf pack was becoming less frequent.
The gunfire was also gradually ceasing.
When the mutants stopped hiding in the darkness and instead charged directly into the convoy’s net of firepower, their already short lives came to an end even faster.
“Phew…”
Gradually, the shooting died down completely. I lowered my head to look at the ground: scattered shell casings and a few isolated corpses of soldiers.
These mutants must possess immense strength. Most of the corpses in my line of sight were torn apart, and almost without exception, a wolf carcass lay atop each human body.
Do they not stop tearing and biting even after being hit by bullets? These mutants were truly too ferocious.
As the air grew quiet, my body felt a little better. The side effects of the anti-radiation medicine weren’t as intense anymore.
Although intermittent pain still radiated from everywhere in my body, at least I wasn’t spasming anymore. I could move normally.
“Miss Yanlan.”
I turned my head to look at Su Yanlan behind me. She was also looking intently at me.
“What is it? Miss Qin Yue.”
She tilted her head and smiled.
“The matches, can you return them to me?”
Although I knew it wasn’t polite, I still wanted that box of matches back. For no other reason than that they were mine.
“Mm.”
She nodded and handed the matches to me, showing no dissatisfaction with my request.
Miss Su Yanlan is indeed gentle.
The convoy stopped again due to the annihilation of the wolf pack, beginning to tally casualties and clear the corpses blocking the road.
I looked back at Miss Su Yanlan, then endured the throbbing pain in my body and got out of the truck.
“Tsk… how tragic.”
Beside the truck’s tire, an orange-clad figure lay on the ground. His head was missing, but the red and white stains on the tire made the cause of death clear enough.
Lying on top of the corpse was the carcass of a wolf with many bullet holes in it, a severed arm still in its mouth.
The ground was covered in blood, and the metallic scent permeated the fog.
I struggled to push the wolf’s carcass aside a little, and I saw a bloodstained AK47 on the headless body.
Not knowing how many bullets were in the gun, I carefully removed it from the corpse and slung it over my back.
“Dry rations, water, and grenades.”
Squatting beside the corpse, suppressing my nausea, I carefully searched for anything usable. I even tore open his hazmat suit, intending to find other potential supplies inside.
Su Yanlan watched me search the corpse from the truck but said nothing.
Around me were the sounds of footsteps coming and going, the rustling of corpses being moved, and the murmurs of people counting casualties.
I put all of this out of my mind, devoting my whole heart to the corpse in front of me.
This was my only chance. By the time I finished searching this body, the belongings of soldiers who died elsewhere would have long been confiscated. So, I had to try my best not to miss anything.
Naturally, I didn’t spare the magazines on the corpse either, checking them one by one to see if there were any bullets left. I took the ones that did and discarded the empty ones.
“The ammo pouch is empty…”
Holding the empty pouch used to carry bullets, I felt a bit lost.
The magazines on this deceased person were all empty; even the ammo pouch had no spare rounds.
That meant the only thing I could use was the magazine currently in the gun, and I didn’t know how many bullets were in it.
My chaotic brain was still lost in disappointment, completely failing to notice the sound beside me.
A sensation of being pushed from behind—I was pressed to the ground by a heavy force from nowhere, my face planting into the blood-soaked mud.
On my back, the sound of the thick cotton coat tearing reached my ears. The first thing I thought of was that Su Yanlan was losing her temper with me again.
The next moment, a hoarse growl made the blood in my body run cold.
Before I could cry for help, a sharp pain came from my left shoulder. Some sharp object had pierced through the cotton coat and bitten into my flesh.
“Ah!”
A cry of pain escaped my mouth. Immediately following it was a gunshot, and the heavy weight on my back collapsed.
Clutching my shoulder and enduring the pain, I struggled to crawl out from under the heavy object. What entered my view was the wolf that should have been dead.
It was the one that had been lying on the corpse next to me. Wasn’t it dead? How could it attack me?
“Qin Yue, are you an idiot?”
An angry shout rang in my ears, followed by the sound of wind breaking.
A stinging heat on my right cheek. I was slapped, wasn’t I? Unsurprisingly, I was slapped by Qin Dai.
She rushed in front of me and slapped my face. Propelled by her force, I slammed against the iron siding of the truck.
She held a gun in her hand, the barrel still smoking. Did she save me? I didn’t understand. I had verbally attacked her just earlier.
Through my vision, blurred by that slap, I saw Su Yanlan standing in the distance, talking to another woman I didn’t recognize.
She didn’t keep her eyes on me. That is normal; I am not a special person.
“Speak! Are you mute? You were quite sharp-tongued before, weren’t you? Why aren’t you talking now?”
Choking my neck, Qin Dai threw me to the ground and sat on my waist.
My head hit the ground, leaving me dazed and confused. Everything in my vision became even blurrier.
“…Thank you.”
It took a good while to recover. As my focus returned, Qin Dai’s incredibly dark face became clear in front of me.
She saved me, so I should thank her. But she hit me again. Why?
I didn’t understand. I was just collecting the belongings of a dead person. I didn’t feel this was stealing, let alone robbing. I wasn’t the one who killed this person.
She probably wanted to take revenge for the terribly vicious things I said to her earlier.
“…”
She remained silent, simply choking my neck, tightening her grip more and more.
“Cough… cough…”
I coughed uncontrollably, my vision blurring again.
Suddenly, I remembered I was still carrying a gun.
Releasing the hand covering my wound, I struggled to reach the gun behind my back, trying my best to aim the muzzle at Qin Dai.
“Let… let go of me… cough cough.”
Being choked made it hard to speak, but I still managed to force the words out.
When I had no ability to resist, I would probably just beg for mercy. But now I had a gun. I could fight back.
So, I didn’t want to humbly, servilely beg for mercy anymore.
What I didn’t expect was that Qin Dai, relying on her modified mechanical arm, directly grabbed the barrel and snatched the gun away.
The strap on my body was torn by brute force, and severe pain shot through my shoulder again.
She threw the gun far away, then finally released the hand choking my neck, but the anger on her face was even more intense.
“Wuu wuu!”
I cried out in pain because she stepped on my injured left shoulder and ground her heel into it with force. She didn’t move her foot until nearby soldiers began to notice the commotion over here.
Saying nothing, she left.
The anger on her face hadn’t dissipated when she walked away. If I were alone with her next time, it would probably be miserable, right?
I sat up, sitting on the wolf carcass, and wiped away the physiological tears from the corners of my eyes.
Pointing a gun at one’s savior isn’t appropriate, but I don’t feel I was wrong. I had already thanked her. She was the one who hit me first and even wanted to suffocate me.
