I hate the Riddler the most!

Chapter 49 • 1,489 words • 13 min read

Rin Yue looked at her sister’s placid expression. The face, identical to her own, seemed to house a personality that was her complete opposite.

But years of being together meant they knew each other inside and out. No one understood them better than they understood each other.

And because of that… they detested each other’s existence all the more.

Subtle actions, expressions, personalities, likes and dislikes… from the moment of their birth, they were destined to be each other’s mirrors. So much so that the younger sister was the first to find it unbearable, donning exaggeratedly exquisite Lolita dresses, painting her nails with sparkling pink polish, and plastering on a sweet yet malicious smile.

The effect of this change was indeed quite good. Most people could instantly tell them apart.

But often, when the younger sister looked at the older sister’s reaction, she would have a dazed feeling that nothing had changed at all—she had smeared paint on the image in the mirror, thinking it could change herself.

But a mirror is just a mirror. The person in it will not change in the slightest.

‘On what grounds?’

She felt she should be angry right now, and then, as usual, launch an attack on the person called “older sister.”

And she did just that.

But the effect wasn’t as good as she had imagined. Her gaze slid to the white-haired girl, and she keenly noticed her retreat—her posture was leaning towards Rin Dong, like a small animal seeking advantage and avoiding harm, subconsciously finding someone who wouldn’t hurt her.

There was a faint fear and rejection of her in those sky-blue eyes. That look was very familiar to her—like looking at a madman.

“Ha,” Rin Yue let out a strange laugh, looking at Rin Dong. “Sister, you knew this would be the result all along, didn’t you?”

Rin Dong didn’t react. She knew her sister’s personality very well and, of course, knew what she would say next. Her gaze was faint, wanting to interrupt her.

But Rin Yue had already continued with her next sentence.

“Truly worthy of being recognized by the supervisors as the most outstanding—”

‘—Pretender.’

Rin Yue smiled cutely, revealing her small canine teeth. A folding knife, engraved with intricate and beautiful patterns, appeared in her hand, flipping casually and tracing a dark, gilded glint in the air.

Wang Ning’s eyelids twitched.

She subconsciously retreated behind Rin Dong.

Rin Dong’s eyes glanced lightly at Wang Ning, and Wang Ning’s eyes looked back at her, conveying a sense of utter innocence.

Wang Ning: ‘Why is your sister going crazy again?’

‘Teacher, can I please not attend this kind of occasion next time!’

Rin Yue took a step closer to them, speaking as she walked. “Sister~, you know our mission.” But her gaze was directed behind Rin Dong.

As expected, the white-haired girl subconsciously moved away from Rin Dong.

Rin Yue: “Was the lesson from last time’s failure not enough?” The smile in her eyes gradually faded, but the corners of her mouth remained upturned.

“Rin Dong, I know what you’re thinking.”

She tilted her head, the smile on her lips growing brighter, her eyes growing colder. “You can’t.”

‘If it were two people killing each other, falling into a swamp together, drowning, suffocating, until death, then perhaps such pain wouldn’t be so unbearable.’

‘—But what if one of them is a traitor?’

She met Rin Dong’s eyes. Two pairs of identical violet irises clashed, just as they had in countless “training” sessions.

[“I’m L012,” the little girl standing next to her whispered. “We look so much alike.”

As she spoke, she reached out and pinched a strand of her own inky-blue hair. “Look, even our hair is exactly the same.”

Before she could reply, L012’s eyes curiously darted around, and she said to herself, “My instructor said I’m a qualified product and told me to come here. Are you one too?”

She: “…”

Her eyes stared straight ahead, as if she hadn’t heard her.

In a spacious room, the pure silver gave off a cold feeling. The instructor held an experiment log, wearing data analysis glasses. Many small children stood huddled together, their innocent eyes looking up at the adults leading them.

A person in a white coat came over and said something to the instructor. The instructor frowned and looked at the list in his hand.

He said, “L037, step forward.”

Then, L012 watched as the person next to her, who had been ignoring her, walked out.

She vaguely heard the person in the white coat talking with the instructor: “qualified,” “error,” “re-test.”

Finally, a strange robot came over and took away the person who looked so much like her.

A while later, the instructor called out several more experiment numbers, and another group of children was led away.

“L012, step forward.” It was her turn.

She stepped out and looked up to see the instructor glance at her as casually as if looking at a piece of lab equipment. He looked at the notebook in his hand and once again showed the same expression as before.

“Other aspects are good, but in the socialization test and emotional level test…”

She couldn’t remember the rest. She didn’t understand it either, and was led away in a daze by another robot.

She arrived at the door of a room.

The door exuded an even colder and more uncomfortable aura. She even wanted to turn and run, a pain spreading through her heart as if it were connected to an electric conduit.

But the robot held her fast and opened the door.

The intense light made her unable to open her eyes for a moment, almost bringing her to tears. In a daze, she saw the girl who looked so much like her. L037’s violet eyes stared at her.

A cold light flashed in her hand as well—it was a small, silver scalpel.]

The leaves rustled. A huge cloud had drifted across the sky at some point, blocking the intense sunlight, and the world seemed to grow dimmer.

Wang Ning’s nerves were taut.

She had wanted to run from the very beginning—a creepy feeling surrounded her. If the danger level before was 40%, it had now shot up to 99.9999%.

But she didn’t dare to make a rash move.

Her hand slipped into her pocket unnoticed and touched her phone.

Rin Yue didn’t come any closer. She stopped just a step away from Wang Ning, watching with great interest as she bristled like a frightened cat.

Rin Dong was silent for a moment. Then, she turned to Wang Ning, extended a hand, and said softly, “I’m sorry.”

Wang Ning turned around and ran, pushing her legs to their limit. She expected to be chased immediately, but besides the sound of the wind rushing past her ears, there were no other footsteps.

She glanced back and saw the two figures in the distance, locked in a struggle.

Wang Ning: ‘?’

‘It’s a bit strange, but then again, maybe not so strange.’

She slowly came to a stop, thinking hesitantly, ‘Am I safe now?’

A slow, leisurely footstep sounded from behind. Wang Ning instinctively prepared to bolt—

“Stop running, it’s me.”

A lazy voice. Wang Ning turned around and saw that it was, indeed, Boli An.

She looked as if she had been forcibly woken from a deep sleep. Her messy, misty-blue short hair was pressed down by a grey round-brimmed hat, the brim casting a shadow over her forehead. Her bangs half-covered her squinted eyes, and the overexposed sunlight made her pale cheeks seem to glow.

“Yaaawn~,” Boli An covered her mouth and yawned, a gleam of moisture at the corner of her eye. She walked up to Wang Ning. “Those two again?”

Wang Ning relaxed upon seeing her. “Yeah… I don’t know what they want, and the things they say are so strange.” As she spoke, she glanced at Boli An.

‘They’re all a bunch of riddle-speakers.’

‘Are they bullying me for being uneducated?’

In the end, she never got a clear answer—their relationship was just too bizarre. Wang Ning always felt that in the next second, they could very well try to kidnap her again.

“Can’t you just tell me the rest of the information?” Wang Ning asked, not giving up.

Boli An raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t I tell you? You have to pay extra.”

Before Wang Ning could say more, she saw a group of people on the sports field suddenly turn to look at her, accompanied by screams.

“The Angel is over there!”

“Quick, after her!”

“Aaaah, it’s the Angel!”

Wang Ning: ‘?’

“Boli An?” Wang Ning looked to her side.

‘Where did she go?!’

‘Wait, a lot of people are chasing in my direction!’

Wang Ning turned and ran again, on the verge of a breakdown.

‘Enough, I’m not a hamster! Do I have to run on this wheel every day?!’
