For most students, lunch is a straightforward affair: head to the school cafeteria to eat. For Bai Xia, this was no different.
While the school didn’t prohibit students from eating off-campus, where exactly were they? This was the capital! If she ate out every day, she’d either be sleeping under a bridge or starving by now.
Compared to the expensive restaurants outside, the subsidized school cafeteria offered the best value, especially in a place where a single bowl of noodles could cost 30-40 yuan. For just 10 yuan, the cafeteria served up a meal with two meats and one vegetable, which was incredibly affordable.
Life is hard, Bai Xia sighed inwardly.
The awakened Bai Xia turned to her classmate, “Mo Bai, are you going to the cafeteria for lunch?”
Although Mo Bai usually left campus to eat at a restaurant after class, Bai Xia didn’t have the luxury of spending so much money. The last time she worked at a bar, she earned over ten thousand yuan, but that was practically her entire savings. If possible, she wanted to be frugal.
Inviting Mo Bai was a mix of dependence and necessity. After all, she was now under Mo Bai’s protection, and her current identity in the school wasn’t suitable for wandering around freely.
Honestly, Bai Xia could imagine the chaos if she walked around school—people would be all over her, asking for her contact details. And this was the capital, where wealthy students were everywhere. For these privileged young men, a girl like her, with her striking white hair and red eyes, was simply irresistible prey.
But under Bai Xia’s hopeful gaze, Mo Bai shook his head.
“Go to the cafeteria and wait for me. I need to go to the administrative office.”
“To the administrative office? Should I wait for you?” Bai Xia asked, hoping to accompany him. It would save her from a lot of trouble, but Mo Bai declined once more.
“It’s fine. Take this and eat whatever you want. No need to worry. I’ll be back after handling some business.” Mo Bai handed her a campus card, patted her head gently, and then left.
Bai Xia was worried about her classmate, but she knew the administrative office wasn’t a place just anyone could enter. So, she headed to the cafeteria as instructed.
Holding the campus card, which still held Mo Bai’s warmth, Bai Xia calmed her nerves and pulled out a small cap, hiding her distinctive white hair. Although the cap only covered the top of her head, it was better than nothing.
She slipped out of the classroom through the back door, checking her surroundings. Seeing that there weren’t many people, she hurried down the hallway, her small figure darting up the stairs to secure a spot in the crowded cafeteria.
Though the school didn’t require students to eat on campus, the real pressure wasn’t about securing a seat. It was about her own appearance. Being too noticeable and attractive sometimes wasn’t a good thing.
As Bai Xia hurried down the stairs, her charming appearance caught the attention of several students. Naturally, this caught the eye of a few student council members who were patrolling the area.
“Wow, that girl is gorgeous!”
“Ha! You’ve got good eyes. It’s not like you see someone that beautiful every day.”
“Want to get her contact info? Maybe she doesn’t have a boyfriend yet.”
The student council held significant power in the school, especially since it was composed of children from influential families. Patrolling the campus was like a lion surveying its territory, and they often scoped out potential romantic interests. With their status, they essentially had the right to choose their mates first.
So, they always paid special attention to the attractive girls in their ‘territory.’
The leader of the group adjusted his council badge and deliberately blocked Bai Xia’s path, reaching out to stop her. “Excuse me, what class are you from?”
‘Um…’ Startled, Bai Xia stumbled back, revealing a strand of her silver hair. Before she could explain, the other boys had already surrounded her.
“We’ve never seen her before. Maybe she’s a new transfer student or a visiting student.”
“Although, she is incredibly beautiful…”
Cornered at the entrance of the cafeteria, Bai Xia looked at the boys, confused and uncertain. She couldn’t quite grasp why the student council members were detaining her. Had she done something wrong?
Bai Xia was genuinely afraid of the council members. For someone like her, without status or background, the worst thing was to offend these privileged children. And if something happened, it would always be Mo Bai who had to help her.
Better to endure a bit of trouble than to constantly rely on her classmate.
“Is there something you need from me?” Bai Xia asked, her voice trembling slightly. She was unsure of herself, having entered the school as a kind of observer. Although she was there legally, Bai Xia was still worried about the student council’s potential harassment. They didn’t care who she was.
“Just a routine check. You look unfamiliar, so you’re probably not from our school, right?” One of the boys reached out to take off her cap.
“Hey, you’re asking questions, not touching me.” Bai Xia quickly backed away, avoiding his hand, which only piqued his interest further.
After years of being a council member, he had never encountered anyone who dared resist him.
She’s intriguing, he thought.
The leader’s expression darkened as he stepped forward, pushing Bai Xia against the wall. “I suggest you cooperate with the check, or else…”
“Y-you don’t have to touch me…” Out of respect for her owner, Mo Bai, Bai Xia instinctively rejected the other boy’s advances.
The threatening words, combined with the intimidating presence and outstretched arm, made the next moment unforgettable. Bai Xia found herself moving away from the boy, almost floating, until he fell to the ground with a thud, crying out in pain from his back and stomach.
“Ah! damn it…”
The leader clung to his stomach, curled up on the floor in agony, while his companions were too stunned to react. Was it really possible for a girl to kick a 1.8-meter-tall boy meters away?
The council members stared in disbelief at their fallen comrade, unsure whether to continue harassing Bai Xia or to help him. This moment of hesitation gave Bai Xia the chance to escape. She pressed her cap firmly and slipped past them.
She didn’t want to use her abilities in public, but this was too much.
Bai Xia was already unhappy with the student council, and the humiliation of being cornered against the wall only fueled her anger. Now, she ran as fast as she could, her white hair trailing behind her in a beautiful arc as she dashed into the cafeteria. In her haste, she didn’t see where she was going and collided with a familiar embrace.
‘Ouch!’
“Who is it? Can’t even look where you’re going?”
