Chapter 53: Buying a Schoolbag
The morning sun streamed onto the bed.
The little one, having woken early, straddled her mother, bouncing and clamoring, “Mama! Mama! Wake up quickly! Today we’re going to buy a schoolbag! And then visit the kindergarten!”
Bai Sha slowly opened her eyes.
She mused that if this little rascal ever struggled to get out of bed for school in the future, she would absolutely lose her temper.
Turning her head, she saw Zhou Haochen also standing by the bed.
“Why are you up so early?”
Now that the three of them slept together, she had become the latest riser.
Zhou Haochen, arms crossed, stated helplessly, “Xiao Yu woke me up too.”
Bai Sha gently pinched the little one’s giggling cheek, smiling softly as she said, “I hope when you go to school, you won’t need Mama to wake you up.”
When Bai Sha was a student, she could count on one hand the times she’d woken herself up; it was always her mother pulling her out of bed or an alarm clock jarring her awake.
Even then, she’d still have to roll around in bed a few times before finally getting up.
The little one gave a confident hum, “I won’t need Mama to wake me! I’ll get up by myself for school!”
Bai Sha picked up the little one and rose to wash up. “Once Mama’s done getting ready, we’ll go buy your schoolbag.”
The little one, overjoyed, bounced along behind her mother. “Schoolbag! Schoolbag! A big schoolbag!”
“Mama! I want a Peppa Pig schoolbag!”
Zhou Haochen, on his way to the kitchen to make breakfast, passed the bathroom and teased the little one, “Xiao Yu, don’t you want Milk Dragon anymore?”
At her father’s words, the little one immediately fell into a dilemma.
Finally, she looked up at her mother and asked, “Mama, can I buy two schoolbags?”
Bai Sha, brushing her teeth, spat out the water from her mouth, then glanced at the little one. “You can, but you can only carry one bag at a time.”
The little one counted on her fingers, planning, “I can carry Peppa Pig one day, and Milk Dragon the next! Hehehe.”
Bai Sha tapped her forehead with her index finger, laughing as she playfully scolded, “You’re quite clever, aren’t you?”
After Zhou Haochen finished preparing breakfast, the family sat down to eat, and Bai Sha began to outline the day’s plans.
“First, we’ll go buy Xiao Yu a schoolbag.”
The little one interrupted, raising her hand, “Two!”
“Then we’ll take Xiao Yu to see the school.”
Zhou Haochen added, “For a visit.”
After the meal, the little one excitedly trotted ahead.
Bai Sha wore a white T-shirt and black trousers, a matching outfit to Zhou Haochen’s.
“Why aren’t you wearing a skirt?”
Bai Sha rolled her eyes at Zhou Haochen. “Doesn’t this look good?”
Except for special occasions, Bai Sha was generally reluctant to wear skirts when going out; neutral attire felt more comfortable.
On the bustling street, the beautiful and charming mother, the tall and handsome father, coupled with their adorable and captivating daughter, truly formed a striking sight.
In the stationery section of the supermarket, it had been years since Bai Sha last visited.
The array of creative stationery left her dazzled.
“Zhou Haochen, what does this ‘friction pen’ mean?”
Bai Sha picked up a pen and asked him.
“It’s a pen whose ink can be erased by friction; it disappears with heat.”
Bai Sha gasped, posing a rhetorical question, “Why would I want to erase what I’ve written?”
“Presumably, it’s for fear of making mistakes, if I’m not mistaken.”
“Then why not just use a pencil? This thing is so expensive!”
Zhou Haochen glanced at the price; one pen could buy several pencils.
He murmured, “Perhaps it’s precisely because it’s expensive that people buy it.”
Bai Sha grumbled, “Damned capitalists.”
After speaking, her gaze subtly shifted towards Zhou Haochen, and she quickly clarified, “Not you, of course.
You’re a conscientious people’s entrepreneur.”
Meanwhile, the little one was utterly lost in front of the schoolbag display.
Ultraman! Detective Conan! Crayon Shin-chan! Peppa Pig! Milk Dragon! Transformers!
“Wow! There are so many schoolbags here!” Stars twinkled in the little one’s eyes.
A sales auntie, drawn by the little one, crouched in front of her, smiling warmly. “Little one, what kind of schoolbag would you like to buy?
Tell auntie, and I’ll get it down for you to see.”
The little one sweetly requested, “Hello, Big Sister, could you please help me get the Peppa Pig schoolbag down?
Thank you, Big Sister.”
The saleswoman, thrilled to be called “Big Sister,” promptly took down the schoolbag for the little one, praising her, “You’re so adorable, little one!”
The little one nodded smugly, giggling, “Mama, Papa, Grandpa, and Grandma all say so.”
The little one put the schoolbag on, tugged at the saleswoman’s clothes, and requested, “Big Sister, could you also help me get that Milk Dragon schoolbag?”
The saleswoman took down the other schoolbag.
Seeing the little one wearing one on her front and one on her back, she curiously asked, “Little one, which schoolbag do you like?!”
The little one cheerfully declared, “I like both! I want to buy both!”
With that, she ran towards her parents, not forgetting to wave goodbye to the saleswoman. “Goodbye, Big Sister, thank you for your help!”
The saleswoman, nearing forty but delighted to be called “Big Sister,” smiled and waved back.
‘This child is so endearing; why isn’t my own like this!’

The little one, now resembling a turtle, ran up to her mother, triumphantly declaring, “Mama! This way I can carry two schoolbags at once!”
Zhou Haochen stifled a laugh, covering his mouth, and gave a thumbs-up to the ‘little ninja turtle’. “Xiao Yu is truly a genius! Why didn’t Papa think of that?”
The little one puffed out her chest, like a proud peacock, stating, “Actually, Papa is very smart too, just a tiny bit less so than Xiao Yu!”
Bai Sha covered her face with one hand, while with the other, she playfully swatted Zhou Haochen on the back, explaining, “One schoolbag is enough.”
The little one asked, puzzled, “Why? This way I can carry two schoolbags I like, and I won’t have to leave one at home.”
‘Because people will think you’re silly, my dear daughter.’
Bai Sha reiterated, “Because it’s a one-to-one thing, just like Papa and Mama; isn’t it one person for one person?
So Xiao Yu and Xiao Yu’s schoolbag should also be one-to-one, one Xiao Yu carries one schoolbag.”
Zhou Haochen, standing nearby, gave Bai Sha a thumbs-up for her explanation.
“Xiao Yu, did you ask if there’s a schoolbag that has both Peppa Pig and Milk Dragon?”
The little one paused. “Oh! Papa is so smart!”
The young couple watched the ‘little ninja turtle’ run off, sharing a smile.
When they emerged from the supermarket, the little one was carrying a schoolbag that was half Peppa Pig and half Milk Dragon.
Bai Sha couldn’t have imagined in her wildest dreams how Peppa Pig and Milk Dragon had come to share the same schoolbag.
Inside the schoolbag were all the stationery items Bai Sha had bought: a pack of small notebooks, pencils, gel pens, colored pencils, rulers, compasses, erasers, pencil cases, pen holders, and staplers.
In short, she had stocked up on all the stationery the little one would need from kindergarten right up to high school.
Zhou Haochen teased, “Today, it seems we came to buy in bulk.”
Bai Sha retorted, “This is called being prepared for any eventuality; it’ll always be useful to have them at home.”
The little one, carrying her new schoolbag, happily walked between her parents.
“Oh yeah! She has her own schoolbag!”
Soon she would be able to go to school, make many friends, embark on countless adventures together, and become lifelong companions.
