The sky was just beginning to lighten. The streets were just waking up.
The asphalt roads were damp, and a thin layer of fog hung in the air.
A group of people emerged from the entrance of the Golden Grand Hotel.
A ring of heavily armed men surrounded the center, their eyes vigilantly scanning the surroundings.
“Simply too arrogant,” one of the men in the center of the armed circle, an official walking beside the current Imperial Minister of Finance, said in a low voice. “Calling us for a meeting at this hour… isn’t this just a clear show of force?”
Owen Yorksonlos, wearing a pair of old-fashioned glasses, his expression as calm as an ancient well, smiled faintly upon hearing his colleague’s words.
The wrinkles at the corners of his mouth deepened as he said in an unhurried tone, “If His Majesty wants the power of the Upper House, he needs our support. Or rather… what he wants is just a superficial submission. After all… his children—the young wolves—are eyeing his position covetously.”
This drama was not particularly new.
A gradually aging king, still in the prime of his middle age, and young, ambitious usurpers, surrounded by opportunistic nobles and wolves.
Every change of power in the Ulysses Empire was always accompanied by such exciting and thrilling plots.
In a world where magic and technology coexisted, it was hard not to become intoxicated with the feeling of control that came with building an autocratic empire.
“By the way, there’s also the Magister Association,” the colleague said suddenly. “I heard those people discovered a new pure human at Alice Girls’ Academy. Her identity is unknown. They tried to probe and find her, but… they were blocked by the Grand Princess at the academy.”
Owen gazed at the approaching vehicle, rubbing the silver signet ring on his hand. “Those rather arrogant and conceited magisters have a close relationship with God’s Blade. But the academy is still the Empire’s home ground, so it’s naturally difficult for them to make a move. But… it’s not that they don’t dare.”
As he spoke, his voice grew softer.
“Her Highness, the Saintess, has also gone. Although the Kaos Church has become complacent due to its ancient heritage, in this day and age, it has no choice but to connect with the modern world to prove its influence,” he said.
The pure black car drew closer, stopping a short distance away from them.
Owen squinted at the car and said to a political newcomer standing on the outermost edge, “You get in the car first. I’ll wait a bit longer.”
The colleague gave him a surprised look, then, as if in understanding, tactfully turned his head away. The group fell into a collective silence.
The newcomer had been pushed into politics by his family. Standing on the periphery of a group of big shots, he hadn’t been able to get a word in.
Hearing Owen speak to him, he was flattered and said, “No, no, Minister, I don’t need to. I can take the car that comes later. You go first…”
But before he could finish, a guard stood beside him, silently looking at him while holding a gun.
He sensed that something was wrong, but there was no time for him to react. He could only get into the car, bewildered.
Owen and the others watched as the vehicle drove away. He said softly, “He’s a good kid.”
Wang Ning woke with a start, sitting up and looking at the cool, dim light outside the window.
She wiped the sweat from her forehead and fumbled in her blankets for her phone.
She groggily turned off the alarm, and a notification suddenly popped up.
[The news forecast you are following has been updated.]
[On the 24th at 5 a.m., a young government official died in a car accident on Bailey Road near the Golden Grand Hotel.]
A jolt went through Wang Ning, and she was instantly wide awake.
She stared at the “Forecast 100%” that had sent the news, tapped on it, and saw that the original forecast had turned from red to grey, with a new [Remove] option next to it.
Her mind was in a turmoil. She checked Boli An’s messages again. No reply, only silence.
Wang Ning: ‘Ahhh, of all times, why are you still sleeping now?!’
Although the news and the forecast were slightly different, the similarity was far too high!
Then, she suddenly remembered. What was the next forecast?
[Tomorrow at 12 p.m., “Gray Whale” will take the first place at St. Alice Academy.]
