Reunion

Chapter 7 • 1,228 words • 11 min read

For Su Mian, although the world after his rebirth was similar to his memories of the other world in terms of culture and technology, the history was entirely different.

The biggest difference between this world and his previous one was that this world had experienced several glorious epochs.

Some of these civilizations were said to be even more prosperous than the current one.

Without exception, however, all these civilizations eventually met with complete destruction.

According to the currently authoritative theory, this world once had six Old Epochs that gave birth to hundreds of brilliant civilizations.

Only two of these epochs were destroyed by natural environments or disasters; of the remaining four, one was destroyed by humanity itself, and the other three were completely unknown.

People of this epoch—the New Epoch, also known as the Seventh Epoch—could only try to study their technology and culture through various ancient objects and ruins left behind by their predecessors.

Most importantly, they sought to investigate the secrets behind the destruction of these epochs to avoid repeating the same mistakes.

This made the field of archaeology in this world vastly different from the other world, turning it into a very popular profession globally.

After entering university, Su Mian also chose the Department of Archaeology, specifically majoring in Ancient Object Research and Appreciation.

His university, Yujing University, had an archaeology program that was definitely ranked among the top three in the country.

One reason he chose archaeology was his interest in the past history of this world.

More importantly, he had heard that many ancient objects possessed incredible powers, many of which could not be explained by modern people.

Since he had many secrets he could not explain himself, Su Mian had wondered if they might be related to those past civilizations or if he could find clues within them.

It was with many expectations that he worked hard to get into Yujing University.

However, after a year of study, let alone archaeology, he had barely even touched an ancient object!

Most of his studies consisted of ancient object maintenance, followed by various geographical knowledge and environmental changes.

Of course, Su Mian had heard some mysterious rumors.

For example, many academies were said to select top students every year to join real archaeologists in special research and excavations.

The authenticity of this was questionable, as he had never heard of anyone in his department being selected.

Choosing this major was not a mistake, however; at least in this new world, the employment prospects were excellent.

The leather seats of the car were very comfortable.

Even though Qi Chuan had only gotten his driver’s license last year and his skills were average, Su Mian did not feel any bumps along the way.

The nearby roads were in good condition, and while there were many cars, it was not congested.

They chatted idly during the drive.

Just as Su Mian was starting to feel drowsy, the car finally stopped in front of an old residential complex.

Su Mian pushed open the car door with a yawn and took in his surroundings.

It was a very ordinary, old-fashioned residential area.

The buildings were only four or five stories high and looked very dilapidated, with mottled walls and peeling plaster.

Many of the security bars were severely aged, showing obvious safety hazards.

No one usually managed such places, and the residents were mostly workers from nearby factories and elderly people with mobility issues.

Professor Zhou had lived here for more than ten years.

After his wife passed away, he spent more time in the university dormitories but would still return here from time to time.

Su Mian waited for Qi Chuan to find a parking space before they walked into the complex together.

Since Qi Chuan had visited Professor Zhou here more than once, they did not need to ask anyone for directions.

Before long, they stopped at Building Number Three.

“Look, there is a vehicle!”

The beautiful youth pointed forward.

Not far from the base of Building Number Three, a solid black van was parked.

The brand was unrecognizable, and the body was entirely black.

The windows had clearly undergone special treatment, making it impossible to see inside from the outside.

Although the vehicle lacked police markings, Su Mian and Qi Chuan recognized it at a glance as a special police vehicle.

It clearly looked different from ordinary cars.

Just as they were debating whether to go upstairs or check if anyone was in the car to talk to, the van door was pulled open from the inside.

A tall man dressed in black with sharp eyes stepped out of the car.

He habitually glanced around and immediately saw Su Mian and his friend nearby.

A boy with glasses and a middle-aged man in plain clothes followed him out of the car.

Seeing Jiang Xun standing still, they instinctively looked in the same direction.

The serious-looking middle-aged man spoke.

“Is there a problem, Captain Jiang?”

“No, I just happen to know them.”

Jiang Xun shook his head and hesitated for a moment.

He then waved his hand to let the other two go upstairs first.

“You two go ahead. Those two kids are staring this way; they probably have something they need. I will go check it out.”

“Well… alright.”

The middle-aged man did not insist, and the boy with glasses said nothing from beginning to end.

After the two went upstairs together, Jiang Xun walked toward Su Mian and Qi Chuan.

As he approached, he spoke.

“We meet again, little friend. Are you feeling alright today?”

“If you are feeling unwell, you should go to the hospital. You cannot keep putting it off.”

The man recognized Su Mian.

Su Mian also recognized this man—who was likely a police officer—as the one who had caught him when he was about to fall yesterday.

He had wondered if they would meet again while he was at home, and now they had encountered each other as soon as he stepped out!

What were the odds?

Su Mian’s eyes flickered slightly, but his expression changed the moment the man got closer.

The scent of fresh blood hit him.

The sweetness of flesh and blood full of power.

The desire beneath that body was as hot as lava.

His eyes turned red, and he almost lost control and lunged forward.

He quickly pulled away, retreating several steps!

Jiang Xun was stunned to see the young boy suddenly retreat in such a strange manner as he approached.

He touched his face awkwardly.

“Am I that scary?”

Although his profession was special and his hands were often stained with blood, he believed his appearance was quite good.

He certainly did not think he was “scary.”

Yet the boy’s gaze just now looked as if he were looking at some kind of terrifying monster.

The atmosphere was momentarily awkward.

Finally, Qi Chuan was the first to react.

“Ah, Officer, my friend is just a bit shy!”

“He is not… uh, he is not disgusted by you. He is just nervous and scared. Yes, that is it!”

Then, as if just realizing what Jiang Xun had said, he turned to look at the strange Su Mian.

“Wait, Su Mian, do you actually know this officer?”

“And what happened yesterday?”

“Eh, why is your face so red? Are you okay…”
