The Unveiling Truth

Chapter 73744 words7 min read

CRACK—

Bai Wanwan’s palm connected with Liu Hanzhi’s head, a crisp sound echoing through the ward. Liu Hanzhi cried out in pain, clutching her head immediately.

“Hiss, that hurts…”

Liu Hanzhi covered her head, hunkering down defensively. Yet, even after taking a hit, she harbored no regrets.

After all, the question had been asked, and with the Truth Talisman’s power, she was bound to receive the answer she desired.

The most profoundly shaken person, however, was the poor little nurse standing nearby.

Compelled by the Truth Talisman to relentlessly speak the truth, she had braced herself for the possibility of having even her third-grade bed-wetting incident exposed.

But who could have anticipated such juicy gossip?

Shi Xiangning, the little nurse, was also a little female ghost. And little female ghosts, like all girls, were inherently fond of gossip.

With such explosive news practically delivered to her doorstep, how could she possibly resist indulging?

“Quick, answer her! Answer her!”

Shi Xiangning fixated on Bai Wanwan and Liu Hanzhi, much like an obsessive fan shipping a couple, her heart lodged in her throat.

“I hate you! Is this the question I asked you to ask? You used my Truth Talisman like this, didn’t you?”

“Boring! Utterly boring!”

Bai Wanwan snatched a pillow from the hospital bed and flung it forcefully at Liu Hanzhi.

Liu Hanzhi made no move to dodge. However, upon hearing Bai Wanwan declare, “I hate you,” she couldn’t help but lower her head.

At that moment, Liu Hanzhi felt as though her world was crumbling. She sagged like a frost-bitten eggplant, her spirit and energy withered by half.

‘Wanwan hates me. She really hates me, doesn’t she? Of course… after all, I did something so outrageous.’

‘But my only expectation was for her to have a neutral attitude towards me.’

Liu Hanzhi’s heart swelled with grievance, and her lips couldn’t help but purse into a pout.

Yet, as her gaze fell upon the Truth Talisman tucked into her chest, she paused, a hint of surprise crossing her face.

The Truth Talisman showed no change whatsoever!

Logically, a Truth Talisman, once used and if the speaker’s words truly reflected their innermost thoughts, should dim.

However, the several unused Truth Talismans nestled in Liu Hanzhi’s chest remained completely unchanged.

This meant!

What Bai Wanwan had just said was not the truth! The talisman, in fact, had no influence over her; whether she spoke truthfully or not depended entirely on her own will.

As if to confirm her theory, Liu Hanzhi carefully picked up the pillow that had been thrown at her face and cautiously spoke, “Wanwan, we signed a marriage contract, right?”

“Nonsense! Are you stupid? Wasn’t it you who forced it upon me?”

Bai Wanwan was utterly incapable of comprehending Liu Hanzhi’s subtle thoughts. In matters of affection, Bai Wanwan was as dense as a block of wood.

From childhood, her grandfather had only taught her how to invoke spirits, draw talismans, read fortunes, interpret feng shui, and perform paper crafting and funeral rites. He had never once taught her how to deal with a cunning little female ghost who had fallen genuinely in love with her.

Liu Hanzhi paid no mind to Bai Wanwan’s scolding. Instead, she lowered her gaze to the Truth Talisman on her chest.

It had dimmed! One of them had truly dimmed!

At this, Liu Hanzhi arrived at two exhilarating conclusions.

Firstly, Bai Wanwan was unaffected by the talismans; even a Truth Talisman could not compel her to speak the truth.

Secondly, Bai Wanwan did not hate her. What she had said was merely the opposite of what she felt. Her true attitude towards Liu Hanzhi might be the neutral one she had hoped for, or perhaps even… affection!?

Even a tiny flicker of it would be more than enough for Liu Hanzhi.

With this thought, a smile involuntarily bloomed on Liu Hanzhi’s face.

She didn’t even realize that for all her years as a ghost, unable to reincarnate had always been a dark cloud hanging over her.

It seemed an incredibly long time since she had felt such heartfelt joy.

And this first instance of genuine happiness had remarkably come from Bai Wanwan.

Even reflecting on her life, because of her appearance, it seemed she had never truly been happy either.

She was like a gilded cage’s canary, and Bai Wanwan, since the dawn of her consciousness, was her only light.
